I have had a severe back problem. It has just gone and I could not stand up yesterday. I called doctor but they were not too worried just left me some codiene. Later that evening it got so bad I could not move in bed at all and was hurting very bad we called emergancy doctor who came out and gave me a painkilling injection and some diazapam. She also said I had a temperature and high pulse so asked me to send in a sample. I was hoping I would be able to stand up with all these drugs in me but I am still in a lot of pain just lying here and although I did manage to stand up and walk across the room earlier I now am finding it too painful to stand up again. I am having real trouble as I cant even make it to the toilet I did manage to go in a bucket but it was very difficult(and horrible). Am I just being a wuss should I try harder to stand? Also am feeling quite ill and achey a bit like a cold without runny nose etc and really tired and sleepy. should I be feeling better than this or is it just going to take a long time to recover.

No. It sounds like you might have a cold/ flu/ virus on top of back pain.
I've had a bad back for years and it occasionally just seizes up. Can't sleep as the slightest movement is agony.

It will take time to heal, weeks not days. Move alittle when you can and rest.
Physio helped me alot so try and get referred for that. You might have to wait a few weeks though.
Unfortunately, it will take longer than you think to heal.

I've put my back out several times. The worst I experienced left me unable to walk for a week. These things rarely get better in 24hrs, it does take time.

Oh dear I am sorry to hear it could be so long but a bit reassured.

I trapped a nerve in my back a few months ago and it took 3 days before I could stand up. Put a wrapped ice pack / bag of peas on it regularly as if it's a nerve problem this will bring down the inflammation. Once you're able to move, make sure you do some gentle movement regularly as sitting or lying in the same position won't help it heal.

I put my back out a few weeks ago. Sprained muscle the doctor said.
He gave me codeine, some strong ibroprofin and something to stop the ibroprofin causing stomach problems.

24hours sounds somewhat optimistic for recovery.

Mine went along the lines of:
Day 1 could hardly move and in pain whether still or moving.
Day 2 could move, but in pain all the time
Day 3 similar to day 2.
Day 4-5 slightly better but still painful
About day 7-8 I reduced slightly the painkillers. I could do most things with only some pain.
After about 2 weeks I was generally pain free, but had to be careful.
After about a month I felt occasional twinges if I did something foolish.

I find codeine (and the strong ibroprofin) send me completely dopey. Advantage was that I slept through most of the painful days once I'd got the medication. Disadvantage was I felt terrible when I was awake. Kind of in a dream world.

It depends on the back problem.

Some things don't get better on their own. I have a back problem that gets worse if it isn't treated, rather than better, no matter how long I leave it (I usually tell people I have dislocated my arse Grin, and that is more or less true).

Quite often medical doctors are not good at treating back pain, and I would suggest that you see a physiotherapist if possible. You may have to pay privately to see one quickly.

I ended up going private. I had a prolapsed disc pressing on my sciatic nerve, and causing narrowing of the spinal cord area. Listen to your body- I had another disc operation four months ago now (my 2nd) and I'm STILL on OxyContin. I was previously on morphine as the pain was so severe.

I'd get in touch with doc if codeine isn't doing the trick and don't try to do too much too soon, you should try and keep moving though x

revivingshower · 29/11/2013 14:57

I can't really afford private treatment esp as I am going to have to take time off work, but I think maybe the dr will refer me.

I did manage to walk across to the other room with dh help as I had been sleeping in dd bed I got stuck in it. But that was difficult and now in pain.

Get a referral ASAP- you can always cancel if you're better. The NHS told me they wouldn't give me an MRI for a prolapsed disc, after a year I went private.
