To potentially offend my GP by asking for a specialist referral?

I have a 4-5cm lipoma (fatty lump) that my GP has suggested I have removed by him as it's causing me discomfort. I really like this GP, he's fantastic and very kind too. :) However, he's only just qualified to perform minor surgery and I'm wondering if I should get a specialist referral given that I have other health problems too. I have private health insurance, so it's not like it would cost the NHS extra.

I really don't want to offend him or overreact to a very minor procedure but everyone I've spoken to in RL thinks I'm silly to let a novice practice on me. Then again, he has to learn some time!

I have a lipoma too. Do you mind me asking where yours is? If it's somewhere invisible I'd worry less - mine is in my armpit. But I'm quite gung ho about medical stuff.

But it's so important you're comfortable and it sounds like you'd feel better in hospital. Your GP should definitely not be offended. If it's too awkward could you see someone else for the referral?

Before you ask for a referral, it might be worth checking that your insurance covers this procedure.

I don't think your GP will be offended. My only concern is that a specialist referral for removal of the lipoma will not necessarily help with your other medical issues, unless they are connected.

I have hundreds of hundreds of them. All over my body, I am covered. They get quite painful when they are touched.

I can't get the bloody NHS to remove any of them for me.

YANBU. The GP will understand I am sure.

Mines on my inner elbow and I can't bend my arm properly.

My reason for referral would be because I'd rather be in a hospital environment if possible rather than I feel I need a specialist, if that makes sense?

If I wasn't covered privately, it wouldn't be the end of the world. There's another experienced GP there who I know does minor procedures, so I'd probably ask her and risk offended the above mentioned GP. Blush

I had one removed by the NHS at the day hospital and it was a pretty full on day tbh.
I really wouldn't want it done by the GP.

Poor you. Sounds like hospital is the right place for you and that has nothing to do with the GP so really don't worry about him at all Smile
