Tv related - AIBU in putting my foot down?

I have a 7yr old dd who like most 7 yr olds loves to watch Tv. As a family we watch a lot of Horrible Histories but when she can pick what she wants to watch she likes Doc McStuffins, Chloes closet and loves Peppa Pig. She is allowed half hour of tv of her choice everyday after she has done her reading and spellings.

Yesterday OH voiced an objection to her watching these kinds of programmes. He is adamant that she is far too old and should be encouraged to watch channels aimed at older kids.

My view is that while I agree that Peppa pig is aimed at pre-schoolers I don't care. If she enjoys it then why not? Her schoolwork is regularly complimented as being at the standard of a yr 6 pupil, she has a huge vocabulary and a reading age of 14+. She works very hard, practises violin and enjoys playing her keyboard and while she is watching peppa pig she is not watching whatever the current Hannah Montana equivalent is...

A colleague of mine has a daughter who is 22 and loves peppa pig, if she finds it enjoyable why stop her watching it?

Surely it's better watching something that is a bit younger than something older (thinks sex and the city?)

Well I adore Shaun The Sheep. And I'm 47.

I have a big issue at the moment with finding appropriate books for her. She can read almost anything but that doesn't necessarily mean she should so it makes it a bit difficult - Jacqueline Wilson is to blame for this and OH knows all this so I think that's why OH's comment pissed me off so completely. I just don't see a problem

Is his concern that for that 30 mins per day she is watching peppa pig she is not doing something educational? He sounds a bit pushy

I quite like Peppa Pig Blush. I was a bit disappointed when DS stopped watching it. YANBU, much better that than trying to watch inappropriate things.

Tee2072 · 28/11/2013 16:27

If it's her time to watch TV surely it is up to her what she watches?

Sallyingforth · 28/11/2013 16:27

She's going to grow up much too soon.
Let her enjoy her childhood while she can.

CocacolaMum · 28/11/2013 16:28

I asked him that OpalTourmaline but no, he is fine with her watching tv to chill out he just would prefer her to watch something else.

I'd much rather she was watching something 'too young' than something 'too old'

I love Peppa and watch it every morning with my DD - 10 months. She couldn't care less and is happy causing chaos and cruising around, whereas I love the stories. I really didn't get the appeal before, but since I've been at home on mat leave I've come to love it. They are lovely little stories and I'd rather my DD, when she is older, watch those than, as you say the more grown up programmes. I think kids should stay kids for as long as possible....

Well considering some of the Disney channel shows are about boyfriends cheating,'borrowing' cars and lying about stuff then he should be glad she's watching Peppa.
