Wine in school?

Year 6 are having a small Christmas show, and the teacher wants to provide mince pies and wine for the parents. Thing is, it will be at 2.30 in the afternoon, with plenty of parents needing to drive home or go to after school activities. I know it is up to the school to make these decisions, but should they really be providing alcohol in the afternoon like this? What would your school do? Can't decide if I am being too 'Bah Humbug'

You have to love the irony. On every lunch box thread parents are pissed at being dictated to and treated as if they are incapable idiots who can't feed their children properly.

Now a school is putting responsibility in the parents court and allowing them to decide whether or not to drink people are up in arms at adults being encouraged to drink and drive.

I love the idea that because wine is provided people may drink drive, too. Like they can't walk or get public transport home.
God every school event at our lovely state primary is livened up by alcohol. I was even bribed with it to run a Christmas stall. We also have wine tastings.
It's kind of the mark of an adult that they can make a responsible decision, OP, wouldn't you think?
Then again some people at my work actually complained about the free sweets that are on offer (I know) because they may not be able to control how many they eat, and therefore get fat Hmm.

I do have a problem with supplying alcohol at a short event where a significant proportion of people will be driving afterwards.

It's a primary school. A substantial proportion of the parents will be walking. Other might come a deux (it being year 6, it's their child's last year in primary) so will not be driving or walking. Driving after drinking a small glass of wine is perfectly legal (although we'll now get the "oh, the law may say that, but schools should encourage total abstinence").

I wouldn't do it myself, because I don't drink other than with meals and I don't drink during the day full stop. But it hardly seems likely to cause problems.

YABVVVU. Having been to far to many of these events I can assure you that the wine will not be flowing and you will not be forced to drink it. Just can't believe that you think this is unreasonable!
