Getting tipped out, eaten, mulched down etc.

Not hugely ethical, no?

"Worked up" or expressing distaste?

And it's about time someone got "worked up" about invertebrates. Earthworms and honey bees for example - we'd be absolutely fucked without them. Shame more people don't realise.

DaveBussell · 28/11/2013 17:14

Good call OP - I stopped watching celeb years ago for that very reason.

Highlights the weird attitude that humans have towards the environment: bugs on David Attenborough = wonderful, fascinating, beautiful etc, bugs on Celeb = vile and stinky fodder for 'celebs' to prove how brave they are.

getdownshep · 28/11/2013 17:15

Dh said last night that he hoped they got the frogs out of the water after Kians task.
I didn't feel comfortable watching Vincent holding those stick insects between his teeth either.
And the poor ratsSad

It is eating live animals that just seems wrong, and it is surely unnecessary. Euthanize the creature before hand having said all that I am quite happy to swat a fly that has invaded my house.

HesterShaw · 28/11/2013 18:04

Poor Po. Slipped discs are fucking awful.

CormoranStrike · 28/11/2013 18:59

Po, sorry you are in pain, get grumpy when in pain too, though I did give a little Smile that you didn't given a damn for things with no spine, as you are in pain from your spine!

I find it a bit odd, beasties in real life hold no fear for me, but neither do I hold them in high esteem.

It's the sheer volume of the waste that has opened my eyes.

I won't watch it because of the animal cruelty. When I used to there was a horrible challenge where they put glass bowls on people's heads then poured in various things such as live goldfish, the contents was then dumped out on the floor. The fish would have almost certainly died. Another time they put live rats in a coffin with some stupid screaming women. I kept rats for years - the poor rats would have been terrified. It's a horrible, horrible show. I've no idea why such cruelty is tolerated. I suppose it's because the animals are not considered cute. It's vile.

Bubbles1066 · 28/11/2013 19:09

There is also a huge difference between fighting off or defending yourself from a bug that's hurting you or is posing a threat to you and killing a bug because you think it's gross or funny. If a spider bites me I don't feel bad for killing it. Doesn't mean all the spiders in the world deserve to die if they are doing me no harm because they are 'gross' and some sado thinks it's entertaining.

ShinyBauble · 28/11/2013 21:00

I read somewhere that a lot of the creatures they bring in are tame. The ones that run off during trials are often not equipped to survive in the wild, so even the ones that make it out of trials alive may not be in for a pleasant time.

soimpressed · 28/11/2013 21:06

I love mumsnet. I thought I was the only person who felt like this! I never watch the show.

Thatisall · 28/11/2013 22:07

I have often wondered how they get away with it. That's quite a good article even if it is in the Daily fail

MoveYourArmsLikeHenry · 28/11/2013 22:44

Yanbu. It's a horrid, distasteful show. There is no excuse for hurting/killing a living creature without good cause. IMHO "entertainment" for an idiotic tv show doesn't count as a good cause.

EBearhug · 28/11/2013 22:49

I'm glad it's not just me. They looked at me as if I am a bit mad like they usually do when I said this at work.

Thatballwasin · 28/11/2013 22:55

YANBU, I have no idea why it's ok with chomp a bug in half in the name of entertainment. Fair enough if it's a matter of survival (and regardless, we generally manage to find a way not to eat our dinner while it's still got a pulse) but just to provide a buttock clenching moment watching a bunch of desperate twats, not so much.

FetaCheeny · 28/11/2013 23:10

These are the times when I love mumsnet, if I said this at work I'd be laughed out the office! It's a disgusting show.

AHardDaysWrite · 28/11/2013 23:24

I read somewhere that the rats are specially bred for the show, then euthanised afterwards. What a waste - I know the same happens in laboratories, but at least those rats are making a contribution to improving health, so it's not a pointless exercise.

I too feel sorry for the bugs, and I hate that it encourages children to see them as existing for their own entertainment. It's just the same as children pulling legs off spiders. Horrible.

If you want to support the creepy crawlies by the way, consider joining Buglife - a great little charity doing lots to help our less cuddly wildlife (which in turn benefits the more cuddly ones!)
