oh and I pretty much shun brands unless they're on a good deal offer.

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 28/11/2013 12:24

You know when a brand has a new formula or new recipe who do you think buys the "old" one? I never notice any difference tbh.

Arabesque1 · 28/11/2013 12:46

I love Aldi. I'm around the store in no time, no faffing around comparing brands and prices. And they don't keep moving stuff around to confuse you. I do wish they'd introduce baskets as well as trollies though and give you the option of buying loose veg.

HesterShaw · 28/11/2013 12:53

We haven't got an Aldi and the Lidl is shit

LittleMissGerardPoppyButler · 28/11/2013 12:55

I'm one of the rare people who loves supermarket shopping, I love going round every aisle and looking at everything Blush

We have a Lidl a five minute walk away, and there is an Aldi on the same shopping park as an Iceland and home bargains, I love those shops!

Aldi do a lovely own brand chocolate crunch cereal, lots cheaper and nicer than the brand ones, cartons of fresh apple and orange juice, 90p for 6! Good size cartons great for lunches. Their chocolate chip brioche is amazing, 8 rolls individually wrapped for £1!

Lidl have a lovely bakery, the crusty rolls are 5 for 75p, and the doughnuts are cheap and nice too.

I have to admit I like a treat from M&S too, though the staff discount helps :o

Morrisons is my favourite supermarket, with the extra bits from Aldi and Lidl.

I think I have a supermarket obsession Blush

LittleMissGerardPoppyButler · 28/11/2013 12:56

Arabesque1 our Lidl and Aldi now have baskets!

AchyFox · 28/11/2013 13:05

I am finding the opposite.

Value range product prices are rising sharply.

eg Tesco
Rice pudding 12p 18p (50%)
Kidney Beans 18p 27p (50%)
Yoghurt 500g 45p 59p (33%)
Jaffa cakes 38p 85p (110%)

But yes they can still be substantially cheaper (eg Ambrosia rice Hmm).

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 28/11/2013 13:10

Value jaffas are now 85p?????!!!!!!!! Seriously? Genuinely shocked. They were my go to when skint "why on earth do people by the mcvities ones when these are just as bloody tasty" snack.

HesterShaw · 28/11/2013 13:12

But value bingernuts are still only 27p.

By the way (and I did mean to start a thread on this)... has anyone tried the macaroons in Lidl? They are in the freezer section. £1.68 or similar for 12 THEY ARE VERY GOOD. I am off to buy up all my local ones tomorrow.

issey6cats · 28/11/2013 14:16

am off to aldi next week to get my christmas booze their version of archers peach schnapps and their version of baileys are around £4.99 a bottle and in asda the branded ones are somewhere around £13.99 a bottle problem for me is aldi is around a mile walk from my house dont drive and asda is 2 minute walk so i tend to buy in asda but buy their own brands rather than expensive brands

judytheobscure · 28/11/2013 14:32

My husband works in a factory that manufactures a certain foodstuff (can't say what exactly as it might out me) but they make both the cheapo version and the expensive own brand versions for a well known supermarket.

He says that there is absolutely no difference between the two, in terms of ingredients and they both go through the same machines. They only differ in the fact that one is 'shaped' better than the other i.e the value one is made to look a little rougher round the edges.

Well, that and the price of course...

MortaIWombat · 28/11/2013 16:00

Ooh, is it a biscuit, judy? Grin

judytheobscure · 28/11/2013 16:21

ihatethecold · 28/11/2013 16:43

MurderOfGoths · 28/11/2013 16:47

I'm going to need to try those Aldi mince pies aren't I? Damn.. hungry now

gobbynorthernbird · 28/11/2013 18:06

Juneau pretty much any of their 'exquisite' collection. I think it was an Aussie cab sauv the other night, but DH has actually taken out the recycling so can't check. The Macon Village and Gigondas are ace for the price too.
