Aibu to be sad over a tree?

I dropped my youngest to nursery this morning, and could hear chainsaws going. I then went into the village to see the huge oak tree being cut up and dismantled.

So, aibu to feel sorry to see this tree go? There used to be three oak trees in the centre of the village but the '87 storm damaged two, so this was the last one.

The village is more "kebab box" than "chocolate box", so this tree was the only redeeming feature. Just a concrete jungle now.

yanbu to be sad. Are they planting new trees?

I love trees too but not keen on the ones that might collapse on someone's head.

PrivatePeaceful · 27/11/2013 10:33

Not that I'm aware of. They used to have planters dotted about, but the flowers/shrubs kept being vandalised.

YANBU, there's a tree in our local park that has been there for so long that it has a name, it's almost dead now sadly and will probably be gone next year. That will be a sad day...

YANBU, I get very sad about trees being chopped down, it is always a shame (unless they are diseased or something, I guess) Sad

My DCs' school chopped down a little tree by the path purely because it dropped its fruit onto the path in the autumn. People then walked on the fruit and it got messy and smelly for a few weeks. So they chopped it down (rather than, you know, spend a few minutes a day picking up any dropped fruit). Really sad.

Not even going to start on my landlord hacking away his our lovely lilac tree for no bloody reason at all Angry

Especially sad if it is an old tree, or, as in your case, the only nice thing in a crappy area.

Presumably it was diseased or something, else they wouldn't be allowed to just chop it down. Wasn't there a tree preservation order on it? Many old/big trees do, and it means you have to apply for permission to do any work on it, and often if you remove the tree completely it must be replaced.

YANBU, and it is very sad when large trees get cut cut down, especially slow-growing species like oaks which have seen a lot of history. It is worth bearing in mind that most tree surgeons are highly trained professionals, who tend to like trees a lot; most of the time when you see a big tree being felled it is for a good reason and within planning and conservation laws. Having said that there are a lot of tree surgeons out there who are somewhat less than professional and give the good ones a bad name.

YANBU, I get very sad about it too unless there's something wrong with them or they're a danger to people.
Wanton destruction of trees really pisses me off.

YANBU

DD1 and me talk to 'our tree'. It lost it's top in a storm and I expected them to chop it down. 11 years later it's still there and DD1(15) still says hi and pretends to give it gloves and a giant umbrella for its damaged trunk in winter and ice cream in summer.

DD2 has no romance in her soul and thinks we are mad.
