To build myself a fake fireplace for Christmas?

Our house is what you'd call quirky in it's decor. We're not very stylish...it's all a bit hodge podge and not much matches. I want a fireplace to hang stockings on, to fill with fairy lights and to drape greenery over...aibu and a bit mad if I make a fake one in the manner of a theatrical set?

I have found various instructions online for building fake ones out of wood...which would mean paying cash out...and using drills etc...I dont want to do that as we;re looking at moving in February....no what I'm thinking of is a papier mache one like this one

I'm very good with my hands and could manage this easily and without asking DH for power tools etc. Shall I do it?

I wouldn't make the back part...the bit that's like a brick wall...just the fireplace.

YANBU

I like a nice fireplace, my old house had an open fire. I will miss it this Xmas Hmm

StrattersInTheTARDIS · 26/11/2013 13:43

I've had a false chimney breast put back in the sitting room. The previous owners of my house ripped out all the fireplaces, chimney breasts, and chimneys. I hate them for the desecration they caused. The room is balanced again, I am putting an old fireplace, from a reclamation yard, back in; it will look exactly as it would have done, it just won't work.

I'll admit that Christmas was a very strong part of my reason to do so.

Yes it's so annoying when you look at the decimation of lovely period fires! We have none here though as's a modern house. So there's not even an alcove where one used to be.

You can get dvds of fire. Build it round the telly and then stick the dvd on.

You can come and take my fireplace if you like Wink I'm an ultra-modern, clean lines sort of person. I don't like having a fireplace, I can't fit anything on that wall! We rent so no choice. Grin

That looks like masses of work for what really is a whim Grin

Although...I have indulged many whims myself...

What will you have in your new home?

Maybe you can just look forward to next year?

ICameOnTheJitney · 26/11/2013 14:17

I like that sort of work though Feminine and I guess it will only take me about two or three days.

Not good enough to look forward to next year....we are in the NOW! Grin

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 26/11/2013 14:36

ICameOnTheJitney · 27/11/2013 08:01

Ok then I will! I know it's a bit of an "odd" thing to do....but as I said, my house is definitely more "fun" than stylish....so bugger it! We'll have a Christmas "set" this year!
