Would you think your husband was being unreasonable if he started cooking meth to provide for your family? (Breaking Bad Spoilers)

I've just finished watching it and wow it's absolutely bloody fantastic! Grin

Is Skyler unreasonable to kick her husband out and wait for him to die of cancer because he started cooking meth to provide for their family when he was gone?

I'm talking about initially when she found out.

Would you divorce your husband too if you found this out?

I've just watched the final episode tonight!

TBH I think he is unreasonable because, as Walt eventually admits - it was about him not his family. He enjoyed it and was good at it.
I think his intentions were good initially but, man, things got rather out of hand!

Bettercallsaul1 · 25/11/2013 23:23

No, Skyler was definitely not unreasonable to kick him out when she discovered he was a drug manufacturer and dealer! It was a moment of clear-headed morality, when she judged him as an individual and not as her husband and partner.

By cold-bloodedly manufacturing crystal meth, on a huge scale, he was instrumental in creating addicts and ruining (mainly) young lives.

The cleverness and skill in the series lay in the manipulation of our sympathies, causing us to suspend our moral judgement. By giving Walt many other redeeming features and by stressing his "underdog" status at the beginning , we find ourselves willing him on succeed, despite knowing what he is doing. But, when Skyler learns the truth, her first reaction is the right one, unclouded by sentiment or loyalty. Later, she gets sucked into the situation, mainly through fear of what exposure would do to her children, and so she allows her conscience to be compromised - until, at the end, the murder of Hank opens her eyes to the full horror of the situation again.

I have worked with meth addicts. I'd divorce a cooker/dealer in a heartbeat.

trashcanjunkie · 26/11/2013 00:11

I heard the premise for breaking bad and swore I'd never watch an episode cos the guy sounded like a fucking arsehole. I hated hated hated the idea that it was ok to do what he did and still be a 'good guy'.... aaargh. Tosser scriptwriters. Bah

TheRaniOfYawn · 26/11/2013 07:57

I've only seem the first series, but I don't think that he was ever meant to be particularly sympathetic. so far I've seem it as a story about someone who's always seem themselves as good and mild-mannered finding himself in a new situation and discovering that he actually enjoys crime.

That's made pretty clear from the start - his friend offered to pay for his treatment and he refused the offer and he had all that wild adrenaline fuelled sex.

PMDD · 26/11/2013 08:11

Would you expect your dh to kick you out if you turned to prostitution to support your family?

GhostsInSnow · 26/11/2013 08:23

If he brought Jesse home for dinner I'd find a way to forgive him Wink

trice · 26/11/2013 08:26

It is not the manufacturer who makes addicts, he wasn't going around forcing people to take it. So it is not such a dreadful crime in my eyes. All the murdering on the other hand...

I have cancer and it has made me do some fairly crazy things. Knowing that you are not going to endure the consequences of your actions, anger at the fates who have taken your life, and the fearlessness which comes from the worst having already happened. It is the twilight zone.

ShinyBauble · 26/11/2013 10:48

What show is that from PMDD?

In reality, if it happened it would be terrifying wouldn't it? Not knowing if your front door could get bashed in any moment by the police, or a crazed junkie or an angry relative, or another drug gang. But in reality I doubt a meth manufacturer is anything like a(n intially) mild mannered science teacher.

You really have no idea about what Breaking Bad is about.

Tosser scriptwriters? Wow you sound lovely Hmm

It was amazing. I've just finished it too. What a fantastic programme.

I think skylark was definitely NBU to kick him out. It wasn't just the manufacturing and selling drugs it was the whole personality change. He and Jesse both did the same thing yet Jesse remained (sort of) the same person but Walt changed beyond belief, he turned into a complete monster.

FreudiansSlipper · 27/11/2013 22:25

I am watching it now it really is fantastic. the writing, acting, production it is very sad, touching, shocking, violent and very funny at times

can i understand why someone would do such a thing yes i believe i can, is it right no but where is the justice in someone like Walt dying of cancer at this stage of his life

it really gets you thinking it is a great show

Fairylea · 27/11/2013 22:26

What juice said :)

OwlinaTree · 27/11/2013 22:30

I can totally understand why she kicked him out, then had him back. That last scene between then was so good.

I loved this show, in particular series 4. Best thing I've ever watched.

Hullygully · 27/11/2013 22:33

Just awful

the whole vile series

it all had to be shit and vile all the time because of the meth. that totally skewed it.

OwlinaTree · 27/11/2013 22:36

hully have you watched it?

Hullygully · 27/11/2013 22:38

every single bloody vile episode.

OwlinaTree · 27/11/2013 22:40

I notice you started another thread about it! Grin

Hullygully · 27/11/2013 22:40

I did Owlina, I felt v strongly about it!

diddlediddledumpling · 27/11/2013 22:43

I loved the whole thing. I finished watching it a couple of weeks ago and miss it so much that I might just start watching it all over again.

I do think Skyler was right to kick him out, but I also understand why she behaved the way she did in the final episode. The humanity of each of them in later scenes was one of the most honest and beautiful pieces of tv writing ever, IMO.

EmmaFreudsGivingMeJip · 27/11/2013 22:49

I watched the last episode tonight too. I have loved every series and it was amazing to see the progression of character from mild mannered school teacher to murderous drug lord.

Do you have the dvd? There is an alternative ending on the special features it is hilarious.

In answer to your question - no I would not divorce my husband if he did this when dying of cancer. I wouldn't be able to live with him though. I was surprised when Skylar took him back but I suppose she was thinking of the children and didn't want them to find out the truth.

EmmaFreudsGivingMeJip · 27/11/2013 22:54

diddle I agree. It was like they were finally being honest with each other.
