School Xmas nursery party

May need done perspective! Had letter home from school today. Instead of Xmas trip dc class are having hour long party in school, puppets and father Xmas. £7 each. Is that normal? It's more expensive per head than the dc birthday party .

Yes, sounds reasonable if they are paying entertainers and supplying food.

My LOs nursery had entertainers and food and it was free...was a private nursery though so I guess it was within their budget.

Ifcatshadthumbs · 25/11/2013 18:20

Seems a little expensive, I assume this will include a present from Santa?

CloverkissSparklecheeks · 25/11/2013 18:27

Sounds expensive, we are a charity run community pre school and we pay for this instead of a school trip as we have 75 children so we find it easier and safer tham a trip.

Being a community pre school we would never assume every parent could afford to pay extra and would always want something like that to be accessible to every child.

CloverkissSparklecheeks · 25/11/2013 18:28

Btw - children were asked to bring their own party food, we would send a paper plate home, this then ensures each child has a plate of food they like.

Rufus44 · 25/11/2013 18:30

Sounds expensive, I don't think a pre school or school that my children have attended have charged for any entertainment or (small) gifts

WooWooOwl · 25/11/2013 18:31

I don't think there is a 'normal'. Different schools do different things.

The cost sounds fine to me if there's going to be lots of entertainment and presumably the children will get a gift from Father Christmas.

If you don't want your child to take part, then keep her home for the day.

CaptainSweatPants · 25/11/2013 18:31

I think it's ok if they don't ask you to bring anything as well

Sparklymommy · 25/11/2013 18:59

Our preschool asked for a plate of party food.

Our dance school do a Christmas party with a disco Santa's grotto and decent gifts and party food. We charge £2 per child and the rest is funded by the PTA. It's the best Christmas party my kids go to!

nothingbyhalves · 25/11/2013 19:20

The party is during school time. Teachers told kids all about it today so they are excited. So would feel mean to not let them go. They are our first dc and a lot if the school thing is quite new to us, so really just getting done perspective really. Thanks

I think that sounds expensive. However, in your position I would feel like I had to pay it because the dc would be missing out. Seems steep though!

HappyMummyOfOne · 25/11/2013 19:37

Food, puppet entertainer and a present from santa easily come to £7. Its not compulsory so you can choose not to attend if you begrudge paying.

CloverkissSparklecheeks · 25/11/2013 20:04

If the child normally attends on this day I think this puts parents into a very difficult position. Many children at our pre-school could only go once they had the government funding and definitely could not afford £7 per child (often 2 children pre-school age) to go.

I agree people will feel they have to. There is no need to put on such an expensive party for under 5s.

TheArmadillo · 25/11/2013 20:09

That's a lot of money especially just before xmas. Couldn't they scale it back a bit to reduce the price. I would be struggling to afford it.

Ds school assigns you a food to bring in (e.g. sausage rolls) and advises you don't provide too much - so £1-2, and you don't provide kids with lunch as the party food covers lunch. Then they have a party in the hall.

While it's a nice idea in theory to go all out it's a lot of money to ask for and so YANBU.

ZenNudist · 25/11/2013 20:22

That's extortionate. £7 ? Where do you live? We are going to playgroup party. It's 2 hours (as is length of playgroup) there will be Santa (volunteer) with little pressie (a book probably) kiddie food and dancing to Christmas songs, Christmas crafts possibly. £2.50 north west. Unfunded.

If its only an hour there won't be time to do much in the way of puppet show Santa and food. Surly it's 2 hrs, still too expensive.

I can see a trip out being pricey. I expect they are overspending on gifts. Surely Santa isn't being paid, how mercenary.

Have a quiet word. Express discontent. Say you are being corralled into paying when you're already paying nursery right? You can't leave dc out. They need to learn not to overdo these things.

My private nursery do a 'free' Christmas party with Santa food & gift. Then again they can afford it with how much we pay!!!

Tabby1963 · 25/11/2013 20:26

Sounds expensive. I remember attending a puppet show at primary school which traumatised me. I still find puppets creepy, and clowns so I would not send my child to that party. Take your little one to one of the department store santas instead.

Jinty64 · 25/11/2013 20:32

Our private nursery party was free but parents provided the Santa gift. School parties also free but we provide some food and the Holden don't get a present from Santa.

nothingbyhalves · 25/11/2013 21:12

It's a state school, not private nursery. We are in Wales and kids start school at 3 here.
