WIBU to "starve" DS?

DS has yet another stomach bug, usually I try and get him to eat anything I can, but would I be unreasonable to just give him fluids until he is better? It is how I treat myself when I have a stomach bug. I think I feel concerned about doing it because DS is only 1.10.

when mine were poorly at that age I would have been told fluids only (and probably ignored it in favour of their comfort) but I think nowadays things are different and its thought that food won't really hurt at all.

Obviously fluids are most important

YANBU. It's really hard when they're that small, but I do find kids get better faster if you're not feeding the bug. When my dc were that small though I gave lots of fluids and the odd cracker or bit of dry toast, so kind of hedged my bets..

Norudeshitrequired · 25/11/2013 10:01

Clear fluids only until any sickness and diarrhoea has stopped and then dry foods like toast until he feels better. If he is really hungry then stick with dry foods and clear fluids.

Tee2072 · 25/11/2013 10:03

There is a school of thought that any food is good.

Otherwise you should stick to BRAT
Bananas
Rice
Apple sauce
Toast

Sparklymommy · 25/11/2013 10:03

Rich tea biscuits and clear fluids.

OHforDUCKScake · 25/11/2013 10:04

I always follow my childs lead. If they want to eat Id feed them, but dry toast and water.

welshnat · 25/11/2013 10:49

He seems to have no interest in food so I will continue with the water and Dioralyte. He has had no food since yesterday lunch time and so far has had no messy nappies since 5 this morning, so I'm hoping he is getting better.

As long as he's drinking and taking dioralyte, he'll be okay. Fluid is more important than solid at this point!

MummyMagoo15 · 25/11/2013 11:58

Most of the time they seem to go off food anyway so maybe its better to just stick to fluids until they are ready to eat then be dictated by them?

Thurlow · 25/11/2013 12:03

Whenever we've spoken to a doctor when DD had D&V at that age, they didn't care remotely about her eating solids. Just plenty of liquids and, if you can get it in, dioralyte. Definitely follow his lead. You can offer a bit of plain toast or a pain biscuit, but if he's not interested don't push it.

BitOutOfPractice · 25/11/2013 12:07

I think when adults have a tummy bug they eat because they think they ought to

Kids, ime are much more sensible nd if they don't feel like eating, they won't. Be led by him and he'll soon let you know when he wants to eat.

Hope he's better soon!

Well he has slept most of the morning but woke up asking for a biscuit so I gave him a Rich Tea, managed to get some water into him and he's gone back to sleep. So far the Rich Tea hasn't seemed to affect him badly. Thanks for all of your advice, always good to know you're not neglecting your child!
