AIBU Council repairs

CheeseToasty · 21/11/2013 16:47

So we recently had some repair work done in our bathroom which involved removing half the tiles in the bathroom. A tiler was sent today. The new tiles are a different shade of white. The grout is a differrent colour. The tiles dont line up and the finish is poor eg tiles hang over the edge of the wall and there was a plastic edge trim which is broken etc. Its a bit hard to explain. AIBU to have expect more or should I accept my home to be less than perfet when it is council :-(

I'd pay to have it re-tiled myself as I very much doubt the Council will change them,.

WooWooOwl · 21/11/2013 17:04

You don't have to accept that it's going to be less than perfect because its council, you have the option of paying for it yourself.

tablefor4 · 21/11/2013 17:07

I disagree. The Council will pay for services. The contractors often rely on people not complaining about shoddy work. Please contact the relevant bod at the council. It may be decided that it is "good enough", but definitely worth a quick call and ask if someone can inspect.

caruthers · 21/11/2013 17:07

Expecting competent work to be carried out isn't being unreasonable at all.

LambChopsRarePlease · 21/11/2013 17:08

I'd complain in your shoes but I wouldn't expect them to change it if it 'does the job' IYKWIM.

reelingintheyears · 21/11/2013 17:09

You could ask the council to send someone out to have a look, i'm sure they won't want to be paying for shoddy, lazy work.

TheRobberBride · 21/11/2013 17:11

YANBU.

Just because you live in council accommodation doesn't mean that you should have to put up with shoddy workmanship. Please complain.

munchkinmaster · 21/11/2013 17:11

I don't imagine the council being chuffed at getting ripped off. Actually we rented out our house for a few years and the repairs done in that period were laughable. I think they must send in the junior apprentice - just cos they can.

AllThatGlistens · 21/11/2013 17:12

Oh for goodness sake, she's still entitled to expect a competent level of workmanship.

Just because it's Council repairs doesn't mean she should accept shoddy works, they still have a duty to maintain their properties to an acceptable standard, even in social housing Hmm

usualsuspect · 21/11/2013 17:15

I would complain.

The council is your LL and should keep its houses in good repair.

There's no excuse for shoddy work.

LIZS · 21/11/2013 17:16

Can your request someone form the Buildings dept comes to do the snagging ?

IneedAsockamnesty · 21/11/2013 17:21

All those saying she should pay for it. She already does by way of rent.

If it was caused by a repair they had to do then it was because they were obligated to do it,not because they are being nice, they are also obligated to make good anything that's needed as a result of them fixing something.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 21/11/2013 17:22

Council's notoriously contract out to the cheapest company possible. My parents and younger brother live in a council flat now, and we grew up in council accommodation.

Hate to say this, but they literally couldn't give a shit! Mum's boiler broke down last winter - someone came to fix it, had the wrong part sent out, so did a bodge job with what he had - on a GAS boiler! Fucking accident waiting to happen.

Two years ago all flats had new front doors fitted. They went with the cheapest company they could find - the doors have a one year guarantee. Last summer, the bolt broke on the door, trapping all of us (including my three dc) inside the flat. What if a fire had broken out? Took two hours for someone to come out (during which time my Dad had to use a knife to break the latch) and again they did a bodge job. Front door now doesn't lock adequately.

The house I lived in as a child was so damp that the wallpaper peeled off the walls within weeks of us moving in. I was 4. We were re-housed when I was 12.

They don't care about things being decorative, only fit for purpose (or not, as the case often is) and taking your money each month.

Thanks. I will complain but I dont think anything will be done as I expect they will say it is just cosmetic. I really wish I hadn't booked the tiling repair and did it myself as it will be more work to sort out now. The old tilling looks so much better. I was just really upset when I got it this evening to see it. I had a difficult day at work and it was the last straw. I was so looking forward to decorating in there and getting new mirror, shelves etc and now it look awful the floor is filthy with grout and theres a trail of it from our flat all the way down the communal stairs to the car park.
