Dd has to take wine in to school tomorrow to be raffled off as a prize at school fair next week.
Iv got tons of the stuff in the cupboard as I don't like it but got loads last Xmas as gifts..
Does it go off if it's been unopened? I'd rather give that in than buy anymore :)

Nah, it'll be fine. Send it.

DameDeepRedBetty · 21/11/2013 15:30

Takes more than a year or two to go off! Never gets the chance in this house though...

fieldfare · 21/11/2013 15:32

We've got some bottles that are 15 years old. It'll be absolutely fine!

bobs · 21/11/2013 15:37

Don't care how old it is - I'd drink it!!!!! Cheap white wine is only supposed to last about a year but that's just the supermarkets dates. It'll be absolutely fine :)

YouTheCat · 21/11/2013 15:39

Send some that has a screw top. If wine has a proper cork and is kept for a long time it needs to be stored on its side and occasionally turned to stop the cork drying out.

ditsydoll · 21/11/2013 15:41

Ah thanks everyone :) will be sending a screw top bottlefrom last year! :D

If people win a bottle of wine in a raffle, they probably not give two hoots about its quality. That's not why they bought the ticket.

( I've got tons of the stuff in the cupboard Envy )

ditsydoll · 21/11/2013 15:56

Haha.. I just didn't want to poison anyone with my off wine!

Wine matures

LouiseD29 · 21/11/2013 17:01

Ooooh... wine. Thanks OP toddles off to kitchen...

TEEARDIS · 21/11/2013 17:02

Wine actually doesn't mature once bottled. It's a myth.

People hold onto bottles to increase their price and value. Not to help the flavour.

sparechange · 21/11/2013 17:36

TEEARDIS Where on earth did you hear that?! Confused

Wine changes colour, characteristic, flavour, intensity, acidity and more in the bottle. That is commonly known as maturing

Many wines go up in price as they get older simply because they taste nicer as they get older. Not because people like dusty labels.

Granted, the vast majority of stuff you buy in the supermarket is made to taste nice when it is drunk so won't improve with age, and a lot of champagne gets worse with age (after 10 years). But there is still an awful lot of wine that is made to spend 5 or more years in the bottle before it reaches its best

arethereanyleftatall · 21/11/2013 18:08

It depends entirely on the quality of the wine. A 2010 nz sauvignon for 4.99 will be vinegar by now. A 1990 &£30 claret will be absolutely fine.

RedLondonBus · 21/11/2013 18:11

'Corked' wine is disgusting

Not nice

poorbuthappy · 21/11/2013 18:15

We won a bottle of white in a raffle.

It was off cos it tasted like vinegar. Shock

hellokittymania · 21/11/2013 18:22

A long time ago in the US (well 90s) a friend's daughter got married and parents opened a 50 year old bottle of wine.

I wasn't allowed to taste....
