to want rid of the freezer?

All we use it for is ice and to store frozen peas and sweetcorn.

It has other stuff in that is old and forgotten about, that we would use up in the process of clearing it out (1yr old chicken anyone?), but it causes more trouble than it solves.

We can only fit an under the counter fridge in the kitchen so the ff is in the lounge. Lounge is big so its tucked in an alcove but there are things id rather pur there like the christmas tree dining table.

Anyone else not got a freezer? Going to broach it with dh tomorrow am sure ILl get Hmm face but honestly - its not worth having imo.

We have two freezers, they are essential. I don't think we could afford to eat as well as we do, if I couldn't batch cook or buy reduced meat and freeze it for later.

We also buy nice bread, then slice and freeze it (or cut rolls in half and freeze) - means it's always fresh for sarnies and we don't get much wastage.

We are a family of three (dd is 2), and as I do shifts, we tend to buy as we need and cook small portions. If theres any leftover its tubbed up into the fridge and used the next day for lunch for one of us.

I batch cook, and don't know what I'd do without my freezer. However, we have serious allergies in the house.

If you don't want a freezer, get rid of it. Anything that takes up space is a problem if you don't use it ( even though frozen veg is a godsend when you are in a hurry).

HettiePetal · 20/11/2013 23:50

If you really, really only use it for ice, sweetcorn & peas, then I would get rid of it.

Does your fridge have an icebox? Because that would do for the peas & ice. And then buy tinned sweetcorn instead which is way nicer Wink

We usually have fresh corn on the cob from the parents allotment. Frozen for winter.

I might start a thread asking if anyone has a under counter fridge with decent size freezer section.

I only have an undercounter fridge with an ice-box/mini-freezer at the top. That works fine for me: I only freeze minimal stuff such as meat, some leftovers, fruit, fish. I never have ice-cream in my house, which I occasionally miss.

My mini-freezer needs defrosting every 6 weeks or so though so I cannot store produce long term but it is manageable and I would not really have the space to have a freezer anyway.

There are only two of us in the house and we prepare all food from scratch.

I think it would probably be manageable for you too.

You can get under counter fridge/freezers Here's an example

Oh glad there is someone in my preferrable situation.

We tend to shop every few days, one of.us will grab dinner on the way home.from.work.

Lunches are never at home as we both work FT and food.is provided at our works. DD goes to a CM during the week and has tea there so dinner is only for us two. Saturday we have lunch in and then usually a take away and sunday is roast out and about and simple tea for all three of us.

But what about ice cream???

Rattitude · 21/11/2013 00:03

There is a picture of my fridge attached to my profile, as I was looking for recommendations for a new fridge a few months ago. My fridge is 20 years old and the design is great (three shelves in total and optimal use of the space in the door).

Unfortunately, based on my investigations earlier this year, I am not sure there is anything as great re. use of space. I think the best one I came across was this Miele fridge but the door was a bit underused for my liking.

MortifiedAnyFuckerAdams · 21/11/2013 00:04

Josie it doesnt last long enough to need a permanent storage solution. One tub of cookies and cream and two spoons. No freezer required.

Ooh well stocked Rat

I had something really similar to Rattitude's fridge for years. You can fit a surprising amount in those iceboxes.

Rattitude · 21/11/2013 00:06

I think my fridge was pretty full after an Aldi raid when I took the picture. Wink

MortifiedAnyFuckerAdams · 21/11/2013 00:08

So I need a plan
(1) tell DH i want rid of the ff
(2) remind dh that every time he says no.to one of my apparently hair brained schemes, I do it anyways and always concedes that I was right all along
(3) find door efficient icecream storable under counter mini ff or fridge

OP posts:
Rattitude · 21/11/2013 00:17

Yep! Smile And if you find a decent one, let us know. I suspect my fridge will not last too many more years so I need to identify a possible replacement too.

MortifiedAnyFuckerAdams · 21/11/2013 00:22

The ff weve got was dhs Granddads, bought before dh was born so might trial a second hand under counter combo for a few months then fork out.

Have you given the freezer a suitable period of notice so that it has a chance to seek another position?

All too frequently large household appliances end up homeless - or residing upturned in gardens - as they are usurped by fancy new models.

I have witnessed with my own eyes the tragic sight of ranks of elderly fridges, freezers and washing machines abandoned by their families and just dumped, to fend for themselves, at the local amenity tip.

If you feel you could offer a good home to an unwanted or damaged appliance, please contact your local branch of the RSPCKA - who will vet your application and family suitability to re-home a neglected or abandoned item today.

Thanks

We haven't had a freezer for over 6 years. We buy frozen peas and chips but eat within 3 days. We also shop daily buying what we need and no batch cooking.

I don't really miss it for food because we are so close to the shops but I do miss it for putting knitwear in to protect from clothes moths. I'm not sure that's a reason to get one though!
