Leaving Sales Job, will I be able to claim benefits?

I started a sales job 7 weeks ago, really regret it now as I can see that I am REALLY not suited to it and struggle to make sales, and more so, struggle to be pushy enough to do the job as the company says it should be done, basically badger people into signing up or hang up on me. I was on JSA prior to getting the job, and now I am really worried about losing the job and being stuck with no money for 26 weeks afterwards. What is my likelihood of being sanctioned if I lose the job and attempt to sign back on? It's really worrying me, I was on the verge of bursting into tears at work today.

I know this isn't a AIBU but I didn;t know where else to post it, there isn't a benefits section as far as i can see.

Just because you don't like your job isn't a good reason. Suck it up and be grateful that you have a job!

eofa1 · 20/11/2013 18:23

Ah, sorry OP. Misunderstood what you were asking. I've asked for above post to be removed. Apologies again.

eofa1 · 20/11/2013 18:23

I think OP was saying she was worried what would happen if she lost the job, not that she is planning to leave.

Blissx · 20/11/2013 18:26

Can you start looking for another job now, OP? One that isn't in sales? Have a Wine and please don't cry!

ImaginativeNewName · 20/11/2013 18:26

I think if you walk away from the job it will look worse to them than if you are sacked for poor sales performance etc but it's obviously better for your cv that you aren't. I was in a similar position right out of uni and it sucks. I used to physically feel sick all day on Sunday knowing I'd have to go back in on Monday. Is there any possibility of finding something else, perhaps looking online in the evenings etc?

If you leave a job voluntarily you can face a 13 week sanction. However good cause is taken into account, so if you have a good reason for leaving it's ok. Not liking your job is IMO not good cause.
If you are sacked, it's only cases of misconduct that attract a sanction.
Disclaimer, I am not a decision maker but have seen lots and lots and lots of them.

You need to start looking for another job and get one before you leave. Sorry you hate your job but this is not what benefits are for.

Karoline4 · 20/11/2013 18:33

I will not quit the job. I am just coming to the conclusion that I am really unsuited to it and worried about losing it due to lack of sales and/or not saying the right thing on the calls. I find it really hard to badger people after they have said they aren't interested and are just trying to end the call.

ok

  1. start job hunting again immediately, every spare minute as if you have no job and no money.
  2. start watching your successful colleagues, ask if you can shadow someone who sells well for a day, put your effort into it. plan rewards for yourself for each target you meet. set aside the extra money you make for treats.
  3. as horrid as this sounds (I was in sales and hated it) to be successful in sales you have to detach yourself from the person you are selling to and see it as another brick in your wall to success. you wont do well if you are sitting listening to sob stories or being to meek and mild to get your pitch in before they hang up (also see point 2 about shadowing someone successful)

you really shouldn't just walk out on a job because it is hard or not what you are good at. not when your alternative is benefits or zero income.

KatieScarlett2833 · 20/11/2013 18:36

Get on indeed and set up job alerts.

janey68 · 20/11/2013 18:49

YourebeingASillyBilly gives great advice. Do what you can to get more successful at it, while simultaneously looking around for something you're better suited to

But you definitely shouldn't give up just because you're finding it tough to meet expectations. Millions of people work in jobs they find tough or don't like, and quite rightly benefits aren't intended for that

Karoline4 · 20/11/2013 18:54

I'm on a 13 week probationary period which at this point i really don't foresee getting past. I have applied for plenty of other jobs since I started the current job, and applied for plenty more today. Hopefully one of them comes up good.

good luck with it OP. I hope something comes up soon for you. I remember being where you are now.

Yeah but I'm worried about what will happen if I do get let go, especially if they write me up for not saying the right things to the customer. At this point I'd be more than happy to be let go after the 13 weeks and accept that the job just isn't for me.

If I was purposely trying to be crap at the job I wouldn't be so pissed off and down about it, I am trying my best and was getting decent sales a couple of weeks ago but I've just hit a wall now, hence them getting on to me for not saying the rights things.

i wouldn't bet on it needa. in my first 6 months probationary period in the bank I lost (disappeared into thin air never to return) £3k one day. completely unintentional, I still do not know how I did it. I was there another 6 years after that! Grin

recruitment costs more than giving someone a bit of extra help on the job.

Poor you karoline. Sales jobs can be soul destroying. Just use it as a learning experience and something to bring in money and fill your cv till you find something better. Do you have an idea of the type of job you would like? Smile
