The "text" "texted" debate.

ICameOnTheJitney · 20/11/2013 11:41

Having just insisted that there IS such a word as "texted" I have now decided there is not. I am sick though of hearing "I text Jane yesterday and she said blah de blah"

I realised just a minute ago that it is neither...it's "I sent Jane a text" In the same way as "I sent Jane a parcel" or "I sent Tom a letter"

There can BE no "text" or "texted" you can't "parcel" someone and I'm not "Lettering" anyone.

There. AIBU?

I don't say the 't' on the end of text. So texted sounds like 'tex-id'

I also say 'texing'

And texted said as calmed is sounds the same as 'text'

samandi · 20/11/2013 12:30

SPsWould - I would be utterly bewildered if you said/wrote to me "I'm texing ..." ... would presume it had something to do with Texas!

TheListingAttic · 20/11/2013 12:30

TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED TEXTED

TheListingAttic · 20/11/2013 12:32

Going for a lie down now.

SPsWouldCatFishNev · 20/11/2013 12:32

Sam I wouldn't write 'texing' that's texting.

I dont pronounce t's it seems. I have been saying words ending in t such as sent, bent, dent etc bu

StUmbrageinSkelt · 20/11/2013 12:33

It's a verb. So we do verb things with it.

Text as the past tense is an abomination. Letters and parcels are a red herring as no-one is saying they letter or parcel someone in any tense.

YoucancallmeQueenBee · 20/11/2013 12:36

How could anyone be bewildered by "I am texting"? What is bewildering about that?

You don't say "I google X yesterday" you say "I googled X yesterday." How is the verb to text any different?

JustAWaterForMePlease · 20/11/2013 12:40

AlbertGiordino, looks like your mum's in for a busy night!

AlbertGiordino · 20/11/2013 12:42

Sadly I believe that my examples may have been elucidating my inner guilt, I should text my mum more - or I should send my mum more texts - either is fine.

samandi · 20/11/2013 12:51

SPs - ah, I see. I misread and thought you meant you would write "texing".

QueenBee - not by "texting" but by "texing". Seeing "I am texing Brian" in print would bewilder me, yes. If there was no context I might think it meant something else!

samandi · 20/11/2013 12:52

I might figure it ("texing") out if spoken, but it still sounds weird when I say it out loud.

EldritchCleavage · 20/11/2013 12:57

Exactly.

SPsWouldCatFishNev · 20/11/2013 12:57

That's how I feel about texted. It sounds strange and doesn't just flow.

enriquetheringbearinglizard · 20/11/2013 12:58

Loving this thread, especially Albert's work Grin
I say texted because to hear I text makes my teeth itch, it's lazy and just not right to my ears.

I have another problem, someone who clicks on this thread will know the answer.
My DD called me on the use of 'by purpose' after I corrected her saying she didn't do something 'by purpose'
She was confused and said 'but we don't say we do something on accident so what do you mean?' Confused

ICameOnTheJitney · 20/11/2013 13:00

Thank you Albert stellar work there! Everyone....look at Albert's work if you're not sure how to proceed!

OP posts:
ICameOnTheJitney · 20/11/2013 13:02

Tell her to say "deliberately" instead Grin I can't work it out either lizard

"My purpose was to upset Jane, so I stole her pen."

"I did it purposely"

I suspect that "on purpose" is just plain wrong as of course is, "by purpose" but I have no knowledge of the reasons...I am an instinctive person! Grin

enriquetheringbearinglizard · 20/11/2013 13:07

Grin 'delberately' it shall be then Grin

gnushoes · 20/11/2013 17:39

texted. end of. Thanks Albert

AlwaysInBed · 20/11/2013 17:48

I know texted is right but it feels better/more natural to say text. And I am another missing t-er, so tex/texing, but that's pronunciation, I spell it correctly and my accent comes through when I say it. Smile

hoboken · 20/11/2013 17:51

I use neither text or texted for the past tense but, 'I sent him/her a text yesterday...

azzbiscuit · 20/11/2013 17:58

There is no debate, there are just people with appalling English language skills.

ilovesooty · 20/11/2013 18:06

I said that the past tense of text is texted on the last thread and I've seen nothing to cause me to change my mind.

coffeeinbed · 20/11/2013 18:21

Attic, tell us how you feel about it!

Texted, absolutely.

DeliciousIrony · 20/11/2013 19:43

Bloody textED.

Drives me mad to see 'text' as past tense on MN (and everywhere else).
