AIBU to get annoyed when

People don't reply to text messages and then use the excuse that they didn't have their phone on them, when they are glued to it all the time!

YABU. If you want an instant response then you need to actually make a phone call.

Anniegetyourgun · 19/11/2013 13:15

Maybe they thought it sounded politer than "actually I didn't want to".

LimitedEditionLady · 19/11/2013 13:24

I kinda think that they dont need an excuse as it is their choice to reply or not and how do you know they did not genuinely just their phone down?

itscockyfoxagain · 19/11/2013 13:27

I often don't reply until later on on purpose because I don't want to look like I am constantly with my phone. I see a text message more like an email or letter to reply when you get round to it or not at all if you bump in to the person first.
If I need an instant response I always phone.

Crinkle77 · 19/11/2013 13:33

It depends how long you are waiting before getting annoyed but I know the sort of person you are talking about. People have said to me that they haven't replied until hours later cos they have only just realised they have got a text message when you know that this is highly unlikely as they always on their phone. It's almost like they are saying that there time is far too precious to bother texting you back.

LaurieFairyCake · 19/11/2013 13:34

A text message doesn't require an instant response.

I get lots checking info like dates - so I need to do that when I'm with my diary

RevengeWiggle · 19/11/2013 13:34

Yes YABU, a text doesn't need an instant reply

DDDDDORA · 19/11/2013 13:35

Valid point Andharry but I was at work so couldn't call. Annie, maybe they didn't want to reply but it was in their favour and Limited I know they had their phone as they check in somewhere via their mobile on facebook. If people don't want to reply or can't at the time thats fine but I can't stand it when they put an excuse as to why they didn't reply. I would prefer that they just replied as if they just got the message.

The whole point of text messages is that you don't have to respond to them right away!

So yes YABU.

DDDDDORA · 19/11/2013 13:48

I wasn't asking if I was being unreasonable to want an instant reply cause I know IABU about that. AIBU to not want someone to use the excuse that they were away from their phone when they reply?

I feel like im being told off!

ImThinkingBoutMyDoorbell · 19/11/2013 13:52

I am always on my phone and I sometimes don't see texts or whatsapp messages. Usually I'm reading a book on kindle or MumsNet and have the volume down. If I look away or don't have it in my hand when the message comes through I can genuinely not see it for hours.

And often I look at it and my husband days "Are you on that thing again? I'm talking to you. Put it away" and I forget to respond later.

It is annoying I get that. I have a friend who has ALWAYS been awful for it and I've joined the ranks. Now if you'll excuse me there is 5% of MumsNet I haven't read yet today. Wink

LimitedEditionLady · 19/11/2013 13:53

I dont reply sometimes for another reason,if im in deep conversation with someone.

RevengeWiggle · 19/11/2013 13:53

What excuse do you want? It might be the truth

TEEARDIS · 19/11/2013 14:36

I always have my phone. That doesn't mean I see someone's text. Or it might pop up, I might click closed because I'm busy, and only hours later remember about it.

Things happen.

Objection · 19/11/2013 15:16
Biscuit
Arcadian · 19/11/2013 15:17

It's more polite that 'I didn't want to talk to you.'

Sunflower49 · 19/11/2013 15:58

YAB a bit U.
I can appear to be 'glued to my phone' as I check it constantly when I'm out,but if I'm at home, I hardly ever know where it is, I forget to charge it a lot, don't always hear messages..
If somebody is always lookig at their phone when they're with you, it doesn't mean they have it in all situations.
I go on a lot of long runs and don't take my phone, or I'll leave it at home when I go to the gym, and quite often I just forget about it!
