To wonder why so many in London are wearing Wellies!

I've lived in London all my life and only once as a child owned a pair of Wellies for a trip to the a Lakes.

Is the Thames Barrier in danger of falling apart? Are there flash floods forecast?

Or is space such a premium people of a London who can afford to remortgage their homes, do so to get in a few extra stories under their house?

My driveway is mudsville so I wear my wellies every day and get some odd looks as everywhere else is pavements

LadyRabbit · 19/11/2013 16:14

Because some of us have dogs that need walking on the Heath or in the parks and we do gardening and stuff like that? The city isn't a desert of asphalt you know!

Bradsplit · 19/11/2013 16:15

i have notieced this
Oxford street SHopping area - NO RAIN and people in wellies

StarlightMcKenzie · 19/11/2013 16:39

What did people wear a couple of years ago before Welliegate?

And though I wear a swimming costume when I go swimming, I don't when I'm baking cakes.

Country mouse, me. My wellies, plus anti-blister socks, only get an outing when soggy fields, nettled copses or mucky byways need tackling. I keep far more flattering, but equally effective, footwear for non-country pursuits. Wellies must be the most unflattering fashion statement since the abominable Ugg.

ohtanmybum · 19/11/2013 17:08

Forgot to mention my rather early Xmas name change from ohmymimi.

Grennie · 19/11/2013 17:14

I didn't know that was the case in London. Where I live in the UK, it is rare to see anyone wearing wellies to walk through streets. And decent leather shoes stop your feet getting wet.

gimcrack · 19/11/2013 17:33

I wear wellies when out with the kids and it's raining. I don't have to dance around puddles and won't get soaked when they jump in puddles. And I can join in.

Pixel · 19/11/2013 19:57

It's definitely fashion. I see them in town even on dry sunny days, always very clean and new-looking Hunters that have probably never been near mud or rain. I even saw a woman in a restaurant one evening wearing black Hunters with her smart dress.

I've nothing against wellies, I practically live in mine and go through several pairs in a winter (I get cheap ones as they fit my wide feet better than Hunters but they don't last long), but even I wouldn't feel the need to wear them to walk from the bus into the shopping centre!

Pixel · 19/11/2013 19:58

'Town' is not London btw.

Bradsplit · 19/11/2013 20:14

lol at wellies in a restaurant.

You could pour your soup in and take it home

usualsuspect · 19/11/2013 20:19

Wellies are very in right now.

The last time I wore a pair was as at reading festival about 30 years ago.

usualsuspect · 19/11/2013 20:20

They are ugly and your feet get cold in them.

TiredDog · 19/11/2013 20:24

I live in the country and rarely wear wellies. I can't imagine walking to work in them! I wore walking boots when it snowed. Wellies are for when you're ankle deep in water

TiredDog · 19/11/2013 20:30

This is a good country boot

PaperPomPom · 19/11/2013 20:30

I wear mine in and out of work to avoid pavement splatter up the back of my tights when the rain is bad. Sometimes I wear my smart leather knee boots instead. I don't have the inclination to buy a more acceptable (to others) pair of shoes/boots seeing as I live outside of London and commute in daily and I can wear my wellies tramping around in the woods/parks or watching the children do sports at the weekend and they can be easily hosed down for cleaning.

Then again I have very pretentious Hunter wellies so I must be in the wrong Wink

Bosgrove · 19/11/2013 20:35

Parts of Epping Forest are in London, and it is really muddy there at the moment.

DontmindifIdo · 19/11/2013 20:51

Baring in mind the sheer numbers of people who commute into London, not all the people you see on the tube/out and about are locals, many will have travelled into London from outside the M25 where you need to wear wellies as it's not civilised - but the wellies will be worn to the office because quite frankly, wellies to the station, trainers from the overground to the office then shoes would just be silly. (I only wear my wellies when going somewhere muddy, but then I dont have wellies that are comfy to walk in, perhaps I should invest in Hunters)

hardboiledpossum · 19/11/2013 20:57
  1. so I can jump in muddy puddles with the toddler
  2. so I can play football and run on the grass with the toddler and not get muddy shoes.
  3. to keep my feet dry in the rain.
  4. so I dont have to walk the long way home when it is high tide.
  5. dog walking in Richmond park.
  6. they are pink and pretty.
KellyElly · 20/11/2013 09:06

And though I wear a swimming costume when I go swimming, I don't when I'm baking cakes. Eh?

imofftolisdoonvarna · 20/11/2013 09:17

Wellies are horrid, and your feet cannot breathe in them at all because they are plastic, sweaty horrible feet yuk!

Agree it's a fashion thing. I have friends who are vair London who love sporting a hunter wellie/Barbour jacket combo whilst mooching along stokey high street.

Bubbles1066 · 20/11/2013 10:13

Yes, wellies seem to be very popular now! Hunter wellies especially so it's not just because they are cheap. I've seen lots of people in wellies even when it's not that wet, they seem to be a fashion. I do have a pair (Shoe zone not Hunter though, I wish!) and wear then when it's chucking down as I only have one pair of winter boots which need to last so I don't want to wreck them. There is a child like wonder about wellies though. I do find myself stomping through puddles like a kid just because I can!

StarlightMcKenzie · 20/11/2013 10:14

I grew up IN Epping Forest. Found no need for boots.

The Hunter welly trend does make me laugh. I lived in them most of the year round when I was growing up as I was pony-mad and spent all my free time ankle-deep in mud and shit at my local riding school. To see people spending the best part of £100 on bright purple or silver ones is hilarious. They do last though, I had the same pair for about 5 years.

Now I have a pair of short leopard print wellies that were a tenner from Primark. They have a bow on the side and are rather fetching! I wear them on the commute to work when it's raining because they are the only footwear I own that keep my feet dry. Can't afford leather boots this year. A no-brainer, surely?
