AIBU to consider buying my DH a turbo trainer for christmas

He's been mentioning in the past he's considering getting one. Christmas budget usually is 100 quid, but would be willing to stretch to £150 if that gets him something useable/good/not too loud.

Can I get something reasonable in that price range and how good an idea are these things anyway? Don't want to spend that kind of money if it just would end up being a frustrating pile in the corner.

£150 is plenty enough for a decent one. I LOVE mine and couldn't live without it. There just isnt the weather at this time of year to get decent training in. I use mine most days and you don't have to spend as long on it as you would road riding as you're putting max effort in all the time and no freewheeling! He'll love it!

DH loves his, I hate it! Grin He uses it in the kitchen - normally when I'm trying to make the tea! Depends on how much you love DH! Wink
Seriously, if he loves his cycling then it's worth it, DH sometimes uses his in the garden.

DH says look at "cyclops gel turbo trainer" Evans cycle shops price match. He will also need a special turbo trainer tyre and a "prop" for the front wheel. (In case you are thinking of surprising him and want him to be able to use it immediately)

My dh would love one of these too

I think we got ours for about £80 on Ebay.
(hmm, eyeing it up & wondering when next Ebay FLW might be)

if he'll need a special tyre does that mean he'd need to get an extra wheel? He cycle commutes, so the bike is used 5 days a week anyway, but I know he wants to get fitter.

Justforlaughs · 16/11/2013 18:08

DH uses a different bike for his turbo trainer to save swapping wheels/ tyres. Speak to an expert in a cycle shop. I'm afraid that I'm not an expert by any means, just know that turbo trainers heat the tyres and they shred and you need a special tyre. Sorry, not much help.

thank you just - makes me glad I asked the question now, because hadn't considered the wheel at all.

Is it a mag trainer to convert your outdoor bike to indoor or am I wrong? If yes, we have one and barely use it. Not because it isn't good, just because it means getting bike in from shed across wet lawn etc and can't be faffed. Admittedly we are v fortunate in that we have other v good gym equipment in the house, readily available and gym memberships so we tend to use those instead. For us, the mag trainer has been a waste of time.

Ignore this post if that's not what a "Turbo trainer" is Grin

Justforlaughs · 16/11/2013 18:12

and he'll definitely get fitter if he uses a turbo trainer!

WidowWadman · 16/11/2013 18:30

Hm, definitely don't have the space for another bike. Might have to cross that idea of the list. Sad
