To expect a cash refund?

Had to claim a refund on my train fare of £63.30. Th train was cancelled, I had to book a hotel and travel the next day.

They've sent me fecking vouchers. Rail vouchers, valid for a year. But I only did the journey as a one-off holiday by train. I can't use them online either so can't even get the best fare even if I wanted to travel.

Don't talk to me about train fares.
I had to cancel a journey because of the fucking "storm" and it cost me 20 quid to get a refund.
Why?
A refund should be a refund not a BIT of a refund.

Privatised fucking railways. Angry

Many years ago I asked for a refund on Virgin Trains, they sent me a voucher and, like you, I very rarely use trains. I asked for it to be changed to cash, they said no so I posted the voucher to Richard Branson with an explanation of my awful journey and a suggestion he used the voucher to travel incognito and see how shitty his trains truly were. I got a cheque back! Good old RB Grin

Ok let's pretend I want a refund on a £63 satsuma. It was a very nice satsuma, but it didn't get me where I'd paid it to take me.

Fucking privatised satsumas

How did you pay for the original ticket?

Changebagsandgladrags · 15/11/2013 19:17

On a debit card (visa), so I'd expect it to be refunded to my card...

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 15/11/2013 19:52

Oh, I would to. I thought a credit card might refund you under their protection thingy.

Have you complained?

Changebagsandgladrags · 15/11/2013 20:00

Not yet, I came home from work to the vouchers. I thought I'd fume a bit first.

OP posts:
LaGuardia · 15/11/2013 20:42

Sell the vouchers on ebay. Lots do.

mitchsta · 15/11/2013 20:52

I would be writing a mahoosive letter of complaint. Refund onto card is the only acceptable refund IMO. Vouchers?! Ridiculous.

FYI... slightly different circumstances as I hadn't physically collected my tickets, but I once ordered train tickets (booked on Trainline) but didn't collect them from the machine as we were visiting my grandparents and my grandad died while we were there so we ended up staying longer. I didn't even think about it at the time - just assumed I wouldn't see the money again - but I got an automatic 90% refund of my tickets without even asking. They knew that if I hadn't collected them, I hadn't used them either. Nice.

Which train company is it? I read this today which suggests you can ask for a refund instead...

www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/holidays/article-2507371/East-Coast-trying-pay-refund-delayed-train-journey-vouchers--I-accept.html

bustraintram · 15/11/2013 21:14

Why would you be entitled to a refund?
I presume you were able to reuse your original ticket to travel the next day, in which case you are due compensation for your delay (in vouchers, cash, satsumas or however the company promise to pay it in their passenger charter), but no refund as you have received the service you paid for.

However, if you had to buy a ticket again the next day the refund should definitely be in cash/card refund

Changebagsandgladrags · 15/11/2013 21:32

Surprise surprise East Coast.

Why entitled to a refund? Because, for every journey the train company has to cancel for a closed track, Network Rail compensate them. With that, they are meant to compensate us.

Well I didn't get the service I paid for, I paid to travel on a Monday and couldn't travel till the Tuesday. I missed work. Had to find a hotel, extra taxis and extra eating out.

bustraintram · 15/11/2013 21:50

Compensate, not refund. East coasts passenger charter says compensation will be paid in rail travel vouchers.

You paid to get from A to B which was achieved, albeit with a delay.if they cannot get you home they should pay for food and hotel, was that not offered?

Changebagsandgladrags · 15/11/2013 22:01

No hotel etc was not offered. Bastards.

Their policy says:

You can apply for a full refund on an unused ticket if your train is cancelled or if your seat reservation will not be honoured. You will not be charged an administration fee....

We can only refund monies back onto the card originally used for payment.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 16/11/2013 06:19

So, you used the ticket the following day?

livinginwonderland · 16/11/2013 06:35

If you used the ticket the following day, why on earth would you be entitled to a refund?
