AIBU to think this doesn't pose much risk, if any, to my DC

Had a letter from the school in our bookbag today stating amongst other things that they have noticed an increase in the amount of jewellery being worn at school.

The letter reminds Parents that there is a 'no jewellery' policy at the school as even a small stud could fall from a child's ear and be trodden on causing injury.

I have no issue with the school having a no jewellery policy but find the explaination of why pupils cannot even wear studs to be very far fetched. I'm guessing the head has perhaps had Parents complaining and trying to get their DC to be able to wear just a small stud.

Am I being unreasonable to say the head is clutching at straws in attempt to justify this ban?

The only thing I'm surprised by is that the school feels that it needs to justify the ban. If jewellery isn't allowed, that's the end of the matter.

usualsuspect · 15/11/2013 16:21

That's quite funny really.

I can think.of a few reason why jewellery might not be allowed in schools.

Stepping on a stud whilst wearing shoes is not one of them though.

sooperdooper · 15/11/2013 16:22

I don't think they should try and explain it, if it's not allowed it's not allowed

sadsqueaker · 15/11/2013 16:24

Why don't you place a small stud, pointing upwards on a wooden floor then stand on it with your bare foot?
If it doesn't hurt or injure you then YANBU.

lizzzyyliveson · 15/11/2013 16:25

What about while barefoot getting changed for PE? What if the teacher kneels on the sodding thing and gets a painful surprise? I usually find lost Lego bits this way but an earring would make a change, I suppose.

usualsuspect · 15/11/2013 16:26

Children don't tend to have bare feet at school do they?

Do they do PE in bare feet?

CogitoErgoSometimes · 15/11/2013 16:26

YABU. £10 says they've had a stud-related foot accident.

usualsuspect · 15/11/2013 16:27

Mind you I remember standing on a drawing pin at school, now those evil buggers should be banned.

CrohnicallyTired · 15/11/2013 16:28

I always thought that you weren't supposed to wear even small studs in case of it getting caught and ripping out of the piercing. I've never even thought about the potential for it being trodden on!

CrohnicallyTired · 15/11/2013 16:28

Usual- it depends on the topic. If children were doing gymnastics then bare feet are usual. With dance it's possible, for games footwear is usually worn.

UnacceptableWidge · 15/11/2013 16:29

I don't think it required an explaination either. Rules is rules and providing such a random explaination undermines what they are saying.
sad I did try to do that for you but unless I use blu-tack I can't get the stud to stay poiting upwards

They've probably had a child catch their earring with their jumper, and parents who feel this is somehow the school's fault.

I'd have no problem with DS's school saying this - they already have signs outside saying "no earring Wednesday & Thursday - PE" etc to limit when earrings are worn.

Justforlaughs · 15/11/2013 16:29

I'd just have to ask whether they use drawing pins in school though Wink

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/11/2013 16:30

I'd have thought the main injury would be a childs ear being torn rather than a random foot/earring type injury.

Though I have stepped on one myself and yes, it did hurt

rwepi · 15/11/2013 16:30

Yes usual they do

Agree school should just say no jewellery but if they feel the need to explain:

-They get lost which causes upset and us time consuming
-There have been very nasty injuries (although not from stepping on afaik!)
-Ears get sore-again distressing and time consuming
-Teachers get asked to help put them back in/remove them see above....

Just a really bad idea to have earrings in school

CailinDana · 15/11/2013 16:31

They can hardly say "we're sick of your offspring stabbing each other with earrings and thieving jewellry, the lovable reprobates,"can they? The studs bollocks is to stop those wonderful parents who seem to think rules can't possibly apply to their little darlings from whinging and whining and expecting to be the "exception."

70isa and Maryz I stand corrected. I was laughing when I read it and like some other posters imagined the only risk was of the earring being torn out or becoming infected
