That's it really...

OP posts:
TheAccidentalExhibitionist · 15/11/2013 14:22

I hate:
Ladies
Girls
Girlies
Chick
Hon

All of them make me want to barf, I'm a woman ffs.

UtterflyButterfly · 15/11/2013 14:27

Until I came across Mumsnet I didn't realise 'ladies' was an offensive word. I'm old, you see, and when I was brought up, 'ladies' was the polite word for any adult female, while 'woman' was rather rude. Or perhaps that was just my mum, who was a stickler for the rules. Oh, and my home-counties all girls grammar school which had pretentions of grandeur.

Anyway, I consider myself a lady, as well as a woman, and I'm happy with that!

SaucyJack · 15/11/2013 14:28

Ffs! On MN You can't call people ladies, or girls, or Miss X in case they are a Mrs, or Ms, or mate, or love, definitely not hun. What the hell can you call people?

WOMAN!!!!!!!!!!

Cos, y'know, that's what we are?

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 15/11/2013 14:35

Southerncomforts do you usually say 'next gentleman please', or 'next lady, please'? Confused. Any pub I've ever been just says 'next, please'!

ItsOkayItsJustMyBreath · 15/11/2013 14:35

I agree, it's time we reclaimed the word woman as a positive and truthful description of who we are.

DS is 2 and knows to say woman and not lady. Let's hope more people follow suit.

WillieWaggledagger · 15/11/2013 14:39

i agree, though i bridle slightly less when it comes from another woman

if addressing a group use names, or if too many, 'dear all'

i quite often use 'chaps' for men and women but that probably annoys other people!

oddly i don't mind 'ladies and gentlemen' at the beginning of an announcement or something so i don't know what that's about

ErrorError · 15/11/2013 14:39

I'm not too bothered by it socially. If I'm addressing my friends in an email I might start it "Hi ladies, are we still on for the meal Friday at 7pm?" gives us some semblance of sophistication I think Wink. Rather than the more out of place and defined-only-on-the-basis-of-having-a-vagina sounding "Hi women, are we still on for the meal..." etc. In work though it would be very odd to be called 'ladies' or 'girls' on official correspondence. I remember being very taken aback the first time a mum said to her child in front of me "let this lady go first", I felt I'd finally crossed some imaginary threshold into adulthood!

mrsjay · 15/11/2013 14:43

when i was growing up women who were older than you were ladies so I dont mind it at all I say woman or women mostly but i will say a lady if it is an elderly women, I know it is not the right thing to say and we should all be women but,,, I like when i hear a parent say to their Dc be careful you dont bang into that lady, although i will be cross if i hear old lady Grin and it is much better than fucking girls which i hate

ErrorError · 15/11/2013 14:44

By the way. I don't object to being referred to as 'a woman' because that's what I am, but I think I feel a little prickly about it sometimes because I don't like it to be used towards me if it has connotations of incompetence or inferiority due to my sex. For example a phrase such as "pull yourself together woman!" coming from either a male or female person.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 15/11/2013 14:46

What do you want to be reffered to as then OP?

Dude?
Guy?

What is wrong with the word Lady??

AlbertGiordino · 15/11/2013 14:48

Hey Women!

Enjoy Your Fridays!

Kind Regards
Albert (a man)

"ODFOD Albert" - already done Smile

SouthernComforts · 15/11/2013 14:50

No, I was being obtuse.

But I do say "thanks love" or "yes love?" and when describing customers to a colleague I'd say "the girls sat outside" or "the lady in the red top" etc. I think its more polite than saying "that woman"

Our darts team is called X pub Ladies darts team.

All of which are much nicer than when I get "that fucking bitch won't serve me" etc at 2am

thehorridestmumintheworld · 15/11/2013 14:51

Isn't it supposed to be wimmin?

mrsjay · 15/11/2013 15:01

actually i don't hate girls as much as i used to It used to give me the rage if somebody said right girls we are going to do x y z but tbf it is just a friendly thing really,

NoComet · 15/11/2013 15:08

Ladies is fine I'm very much of the
Lady was used in nice sentences and women in unpleasent ones, generation.

'Tis old fashioned but so am I

Can far more see why girls football team etc. when talking about an adult sports team is wrong.

AlexaChelsea · 15/11/2013 15:09

I was referred to as a young lady today, by an (admittedly older) man.

I'm not a fucking young lady - I'm a 33 year old, pregnant, married woman.

Young lady. Fuck off.

fluffyraggies · 15/11/2013 15:10

Ladie's night out -

Girl's night out -

Women's night out -

all a bit cringy, yeah, for some reason.

Men have the word 'lads'.

Gentlemen's night out, boy's night out, men's night out ... Lad's night out!

(i remember my mum laughing at my dad when he talked about the 'lads' going out - they were all in their 60's Grin)

limitedperiodonly · 15/11/2013 15:10

All of which are much nicer than when I get "that fucking bitch won't serve me" etc at 2am

Memories of being a barmaid (bar staff). It's all coming back now.

My friend is Iranian and speaks good English but makes the odd idiomatic error. He works in a shop and always says Lady when he means Madam.

He can't understand why: 'Hey, Lady, would you like to try that on?' doesn't go down well.

wakemeupnow · 15/11/2013 15:33

Now I come to think of it I don't much like hon either...

OP posts:
limitedperiodonly · 15/11/2013 15:37

I remember the first time someone called me 'hun'.

It was at The Tanning Shop. Serves me right, really.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 15/11/2013 15:43

I always try and leave the subject out if I can in case I get it wrong.

Ds say sorry to the woman just sounds odd but I know some hate lady

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/11/2013 15:51

Hmmm, now I like "Lady" or Ladies because you can make it polite and respectful :

"Give your money to the lady, DD"

or like a New York Traffic Cop:
"Hey, LADY , mind where you're going" Grin

Mylovelyboy · 15/11/2013 16:14

what is wrong with the word ladies. Do you hate the word lady ? Its what women have been called for years. I really really hope that this word does not become another 'word' some jobs worth makes out to be sexist and then everyone will get on the band wagon.

Ruralninja · 15/11/2013 16:23

YANBU - terrible word, but not as terrible as BOOB. Hate hate hate boob, boobies, booby. Particularly in a breastfeeding context [unreasonable, pregnant rage]

Mylovelyboy · 15/11/2013 16:25

saucy glad you said it Grin. To scared to fart on here most of the time..........Grin
