My designer washing up bowl is ruined! (sort of lighthearted)

Ok so I'm aware that this is hardly important in the grand scheme of things but last Saturday I went out for lunch/shopping with an old school friend.

We were in the Cotswolds and I clearly thought I was a lot posher than I actually am because I decided to spend just shy of £60 on a Normann Copenhagen Washing Up Bowl (I know!)

So I have been admiring it all week and will admit that washing up has been a bit more pleasurable Hmm until last night when I decided to soak a baking dish in it overnight (baked on pasta sauce).

This morning is it RUINED with a big bloody orange tide mark all around the rim which won't budge.

Should I take it back? I'm going to look like a fool aren't I? They are going to know that I am not really worthy of a posh washing up bowl (do posh people even eat Spaghetti Bolognese?).

Do you think they will refund (as not fit for posh purpose or something?)

My work has one of these, I always hated it and nearly fell over when I saw the price of it on a website once! I hate that it's all floppy and that the lip bends over so much and can trap water and grime there... Yuk.

Buuuut, I'd try a few of the cleaning suggestions on here and if you don't have any luck then take it back.

What's a Belfast sink?

WaitMonkey · 15/11/2013 14:00

I think it's lovely.

dexter73 · 15/11/2013 14:01

A belfast sink is a white rectangular ceramic sink. Also called a butler's sink.

Floggingmolly · 15/11/2013 14:01

One made of china porcelain, Stealth. Just what you need in a sink.

Oldraver · 15/11/2013 14:03

Is it flexible / as in could you turn it around/inside out ?

MrsBungleScare · 15/11/2013 14:03

I have this in green! I paid £40 for it around 7 years ago. It still looks the same and has served me well through two hyperemesis pregnancies!!

MrsBungleScare · 15/11/2013 14:05

Oh and I've had stains on mine before , they seem to disappear eventually.

HorsePetal · 15/11/2013 14:07

Grin MrsBungle and sympathies on your Hyperemeses (grim).

I have one. I paid £45 for it and five years on it's still going but it is black. It is a shocking amount of money to spend on a washing up bowl. So much so that my then boyfriend and I had a humongous row on my stupid extravagant wasteful spending of money that we split up!! The power of the Normann bowl Smile I still love it's bendy, squareness. My brush is rather bald these days though. So, op the error was the colour. Though I'm sure some sort of cleaning stuff will make it come up good.

This will help you when considering future purchases from that shop Grin

Opheliabumps · 15/11/2013 14:20

I've got one in green, no idea how much it cost, I sent DH out to buy a new bowl when the old one died (I think I melted the old one with a cast iron pan straight off the hob), as DH is quite good at choosing things for the house, and he came back with one of those.

I'm shocked they're so expensive, I have not treated mine well (half melted it with a cast iron pan - can you see a theme developing). Good job he bought it a few years ago when we had more disposable income, I'd be fuming if he did it now. Ps I don't even like it very much, as if you try to pick it up when it's got water in it flops everywhere and spills the water.

HorsePetal · 15/11/2013 14:29

Thanks buzzardbird - "all the scratches are organic" Grin

And you need to check under the fold over top/rim bit - ours had black mould on it after a few years and I had to chuck it out. (I am slovenly though and am sure you all clean the entire thing every day etc. Only I didn't.) Still think that they are lovely washing up bowls as these things go but: the price!!

potatofactory · 15/11/2013 14:35

That is unbelievably ugly!

haggisaggis · 15/11/2013 14:46

According to the Amazon reviews you can put it in the dishwasher (I must admit I'm struggling with the logic of having to put a washing up bowl in the dishwasher but if it works..)

GideonKipper · 15/11/2013 14:46

Take it back to "Saw You Coming" (I'm guessing that's what the shop is called? Wink when you are sober, get a refund and hotfoot it out if there to the nearest Asda to buy a washing up bowl like any normal person.

SmiteYouWithThunderbolts · 15/11/2013 14:51

SIXTY ACTUAL ENGLISH POUNDS?!

SmiteYouWithThunderbolts · 15/11/2013 14:53

Sixty actual English pounds on a fugly washing up bowl? Shock

Shonajoy · 15/11/2013 14:54

I hope you get it replaced, I'm sure you will. I'm off to buy a grey one they're beautiful x

HorsePetal · 15/11/2013 14:56

UPDATE I have emailed them - Normann that is and a Mr Hjellum has emailed me back asking for more info.

How very Scandinavian Wink

Go Horse! I am enjoying this thread. It's like my break up row all over again Grin

wonderingsoul · 15/11/2013 15:46

rabbitthat actually made me smile and laugh..... though im sure that, that makes me a bad person.

"According to the Amazon reviews you can put it in the dishwasher (I must admit I'm struggling with the logic of having to put a washing up bowl in the dishwasher but if it works..)"

Wouldn't the extra heat of the dishwasher water set the stain though?

I'm gripped by this thread.

My policy is to buy really cheap washing up bowls and chuck 'em quite often. I'd never be able to see one as a thing of beauty.

If I did have a pale rubber one that got ruined, think I'd probably customize it with a black sharpie and tell people it was limited edition.
Suggestions for slogans and doodles anyone?

Don't forget to update us all horse

mycatlikestwiglets · 15/11/2013 16:45

I'm fairly profligate with spending but £60 on a washing up bowl Shock. Anyway Horse, what you need to argue is that it isn't of satisfactory quality (one of the grounds for rejection under the Sale of Goods Act). A washing up bowl shouldn't stain after one bout of soaking no matter what exhorbitant amount it cost!
