to think that Children In Need should, for a change, raise money for the poor children in desperate need in the Philippines?

It raises such huge amounts because of all the publicity. I just think its a bit selfish to use it all in the UK.

OP posts:
hardboiledpossum · 15/11/2013 10:40

can't people donate to both? I work for a charity that benefits from children in need I think, the children and families we work with are also deserving.

CaptainSweatPants · 15/11/2013 10:41

They'll prob announce they'll do that at 7pm tonight
Why are you assuming they won't donate any of it to the Philippines?

SugarMiceInTheRain · 15/11/2013 10:42

My DC's school is doing just that this year - the kids on the school council decided the money raised from wearing pyjamas into school today would be better spent in the Philippines. Fair enough IMO.

hazeyjane · 15/11/2013 10:43

The thing is children in need set up grants that various organisations rely on, every year, so it would be difficult to siphon money off for another appeal, because they need to raise the money to pay for those grants, IYSWIM.

The disaster in the Philippines is horrendous, and obviously a huge amount needs to be raised to provide aid, hopefully people will give generously to both.

DIYapprentice · 15/11/2013 10:45

Charities have a specific charitable purpose. They aren't allowed to just decide to use the money for something else.

Gileswithachainsaw · 15/11/2013 10:45

There are thousands of kids in the uk who are In dire need! Pretty much Every other charity collection that goes on is for children all over the world. We sometimes forget that there are kids on out own doorstep in extreme poverty.

littlewhitebag · 15/11/2013 10:45

Children in Need is set up as a charity and it is written into its legal stuff that all the money is to be used in the UK.

This is taken from its website:

All charities in the UK which are registered with the Charity Commission have a trust deed - a legal document which governs what they can and can't do. When the BBC Governors registered BBC Children in Need as a charity it was to support and help disadvantaged children and young people in the UK only. This still remains the case and money could only be sent overseas by changing the trust deed. It's also illegal to fundraise for one purpose and use the money for a different one - our fundraising clearly states the money raised is to help those aged 18 and under in the UK.

My DD's school is fundraising for the Philippines on Monday.

badtime · 15/11/2013 10:46

Different charities raise money for different things.

Do you think it is okay for medical research charities not to give money for animal welfare?

If you want to donate money for the Philippines, give it to the Disasters Emergency Committee:

WorraLiberty · 15/11/2013 10:46

What hazeyjane said

There are vital services that depend on CIN and other charities to keep them running.

However, I'm quite sure people will donate to both CIN and the various charities that are aiding the Philippines.

Chattymummyhere · 15/11/2013 10:46

Is it not normally comic relief who donate outside of the uk and children in need stays within the uk?

I'm going to come across as an idiot living under a rock but I've just glanced at a newspaper online and don't see anything about the Philippines? I'm guessing a natural disaster though

Trills · 15/11/2013 10:48

Right, and the RSPCA should send money to cancer research.

SilverApples · 15/11/2013 10:49

You are right, chattymum and one of the reasons many reasons why the two alternate is the large number of objections that were made about funding charities abroad rather than on British causes.
You must have been isolated for the last week, not to know about the typhoon in the Philippines

Sokmonsta · 15/11/2013 10:51

Yabu. Comic/sports relief raises money for uk and overseas projects. Dec will be offering aid to the Philippines. I'm sure there are others but I couldn't quote who, although I know a friend who is collecting for the Red Cross specifically with the Philippines in mind. If you want YOUR money to go to those affected by the Philippines disaster, find a charity which is helping there and donate to them instead.

Sirzy · 15/11/2013 10:51

What has happened in the Philippines is awful, and I have chosen to donate to that as well.

BUT we can't let that take away from the fact that the funds raised by children in need are very much needed in this country to support children and their families.

WaitMonkey · 15/11/2013 10:51

CaptainSweat, CIN have already said they aren't going to donate any money to the Philippines. It was in the Guardian yesterday.

moominleigh94 · 15/11/2013 10:53

It'd be good if they did give some of the money raised, but a lot of great organisations in the UK really do rely on the money raised by Children In Need and couldn't function without them - and they are often lifesaving projects. Everywhere you look, money is being raised for the Phillipines and I really hope everyone donates at least to the Phillipines, and to Children In Need too if they're able to, but the money raised for Children In Need should go to the causes it's been promised to.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 15/11/2013 10:54

YABU

CiN is what it is and lots of incredibly vulnerable and disadvantaged children in the UK benefit enormously from that money. Are their needs less because of the disaster in the Philippines?

Chattymummyhere · 15/11/2013 10:55

Pretty much have been head in the washer or on the school run, Not really seen the big build up to children in need this year though or again that might be my rock living at the moment.

tbh I would be pretty peeved if I donated to X for X but X gave it to Y.. You only need to watch the DIY SOS for children in need to see that the uk needs money for its charities for the children too.

Surely the Govt are sending from out aid budget? From what Ive just read they raised 13million in 24 hours and the Uk govt have promised 10million plus an extra up to 5million, so that's 27million they got in 24hours (kind of) and I'm sure there is a lot more on its way to helping those people and children

FruitOwl · 15/11/2013 11:00

I disagree with you I'm afraid OP. Lots of other charities, such as Save The Children, have run emergency appeals this week so that people can donate to help those in the Philippines. I like the fact that the money raised by Children in Need stays in this country, as so many community schemes etc. rely on it. People can donate to both causes if they wish.

ClayDavis · 15/11/2013 11:02

Even if they wanted to I don't think they can legally. There will be lots of charities worldwide raising money to help or providing help in the Philippines as well as money from governments. I don't think other charities need to go without in order to help.

SaucyJack · 15/11/2013 11:06

YABU. Just because there are children abroad who also need money, it doesn't mean that UK children suddenly need money any less. Especially as the Tories are slashing social care funding left, right and centre.

MurderOfGoths · 15/11/2013 11:10

Just because there's been a disaster elsewhere doesn't negate the need for charity over here.

sashh · 15/11/2013 11:12

Apart from the legalities I would be hopping mad if I gave money to one cause and it went to another.

Wabbitty · 15/11/2013 11:16

At the moment what is needed in the Philippines is emergency relief aid (shelter, the red cross etc), CIN is not geared up to provide that sort of help.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 15/11/2013 11:18

YABU - there are children in the UK living in desperate conditions who need our help!
