To go back to Uni

PenguinsAreCute · 14/11/2013 11:08

I really want to go back to Uni and start an MA in Social Work. However I am almost 31, is it too late? I also don't really know where to start, I have the qualifications but not the work experience, so am looking for a new job in the care sector.

The application has to be done by January, when do I apply for funding!

Is this a really bad idea?!!

It's definitely not too late. IME, masters courses are full of people in their 30s (and beyond). Of course it's nota terrible idea.

Ask the university you're applying for about funding deadlines etc.

SmartiesMakeMeNaughty · 14/11/2013 11:13

Of course not. I'm doing an MA now at 36 and am by far not the oldest in the class. I don't think it's ever too late to pursue what you want if you can make the practicalities work.

GingerPCatt · 14/11/2013 11:13

I'm 36 and just started a ma. I'm doing it part time so I've got 2 more years. There are people on my course who are older than me. Go for it!

OvaryAction · 14/11/2013 11:14

YANBU, go for it!

Ilovemyrabbits · 14/11/2013 11:16

I'm 49 and am hoping to get into university to do a degree after years of thinking it's too late. I figured I'll probably be working til I'm 70, so I may as well get some qualifications behind me...I don't think it's ever too late. Go for it!

Beastofburden · 14/11/2013 11:25

just check out the course and the Uni you have in mind on the Unistats website. Make sure its a good course, well rated and the employment figures are good and show that people do get jobs in your area. not all Unis are the same, not all courses are worth your while.

HettiePetal · 14/11/2013 11:27

100% not too late.

Call the university today and ask about funding, you have plenty of time still.

Do it. Do it. Do it :)

struggling100 · 14/11/2013 11:30

Go for it!

Enb76 · 14/11/2013 11:31

It's never too late - I'm 37 doing a degree with a view to becoming a secondary school teacher. I'll be 40 by the time I've done the PGCE.

SunshineSuperNova · 14/11/2013 11:38

Hell no. I'm 42 and in my 2nd year as an undergrad. Do it! :)

Wesdly · 14/11/2013 11:59

The first thing you need to do is check with the uni when you need to have completed the minimum hours of experience. Some will state by the time of application, depending on your circumstances it might still be possible to get the hours in before the deadline.

Can't really comment on funding too much as it does depend on where you are applying but have a look at NHS bursaries. Or there should be a FAQ on the course page which would tell you more.

Thanks for all your help! I'm excited now, going to contact the university, have signed up to UCAS and have been looking at care agencies. So fingers crossed!!!

I did my SW diploma when i was in my late 30's. I am now 51 and have been qualified for almost 9 years. It was the best thing i ever did. Go for it.

I've just started a social work BA at 32! Never too late.
