Now i am hoping someone can give me a logical reason for what i have just seen, i would love to be proven wrong as it will play on my mind if i'm not.

Now i have no children so this may be one of the cases where as i am not in the situation so i don't know better IYSWIM.

So.......i have just seen a woman on a bike with a child on the back in a cycle seat. With a baby attatched to the outside of her in a sling! Shock

Now to me that seems extremely unsafe. It is pouring with rain, in a busy city centre with idiot drivers. Rush hour. Is it me that thinks that the sling could come undone, the baby is soaking wet, and if she slips or falls off the bike, she could easily land on the child and hurt it or something even more terrible?

Please tell me if i am being unreasonable or can someone explain to me how this is actually safe?

She's a loon.

Ennistonblue · 13/11/2013 16:16

YANBU. Was she wearing a helmet?!

OrganixAddict · 13/11/2013 16:18

YANBU. There's a dad round here who does this, older child in kiddie seat, younger one on his back.

The litle one is in a framed carrier (like a Little Life one) so when dad leans forward to cycle it looks like the child could slide out over his head!

I hate driving past them, looks like an accident waiting to happen.

softlysoftly · 13/11/2013 16:18

YANBU this brings back that horrible one in the airport conveyor belt to me.

bundaberg · 13/11/2013 16:20

bloody hell.

i did wonder about this one time, when i was slinging ds3.
then i thought about it properly and realised it was UTTERLY INSANE!

if you fell off the bike can you imagine what would happen? lunacy

Tuhlulah · 13/11/2013 16:21

YANBU

squoosh · 13/11/2013 16:21

Seems needlessly reckless to me.

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 13/11/2013 16:33

My friend does this. Little boy in sling on her back, he's now two and she's been doing it for the past year. I hate it, but there's no telling her.

Callani · 13/11/2013 16:53

Sounds like families I saw in Viet-Nam where they had Mum, Dad & 3 kids clinging on to a motorbike. Definitely not safe!

themonsteratemyspacebar · 13/11/2013 17:25

Thank you for the replies. I didn't think i was being unreasonable but was hoping to be told that i was wrong and it was safe in some way i couldn't see.

If it makes any difference the baby was strapped to the front of her and not on her back.

Urgh it turns my stomach thinking about it. Just picturing what could go wrong. Sad Angry all at once.

Nope not safe. I see people balancing their DCs on crossbars, not wearing cycle helmets. Idiots all.

AuntieMaggie · 13/11/2013 17:31

Nope YANBU

I was at a bike festival where a bike fell over with a child on the back in a seat - was awful.

Floralnomad · 13/11/2013 17:36

We have a few around here that do exactly the same and a man who rides a motorised scooter thingy with one child on his lap and one sitting down the front on his feet ,absolutely unbelievable .

NarwhalKnickers · 13/11/2013 17:54

I love slings but I would never ever cycle with one on! Madness.

Mylovelyboy · 13/11/2013 17:57

Absolutely crazy and irresponsible. I wonder if a police officer saw her she would be pulled up. That would be interesting to know.

themonsteratemyspacebar · 13/11/2013 17:57

It shocks me that these people who do this seem to have no regards for their childs safety.
As i said, i have no children but surely its just common sense?

Argh this is making me mad. Grrrr.

No that's dangerous. It's hard to cycle with two little ones but the best option is probably a trailer. You can get a handlebar mounted seat as well as a rear mounted one but I wouldn't feel happy having both on my bike at the same time (given how unbalanced I find one child seat).

squoosh · 13/11/2013 18:00

I wouldn't say I'm particularly risk averse but playing fast and loose with your child's delicate skull on busy roads is not cool. Do they do it because it makes them look all easy going and unencumbered by da roolz?

FeijoaVodkaIsThirstyForVodka · 13/11/2013 18:23

Sling manufactures recommend you do NOT cycle with your child in a sling. So bloody fucking dangerous! I sling DD a lot and even when she was wee (younger than a year) she loved flinging herself from side to side or bouncing up and down shouting excitedly in my ears. Walking in a straight line while she does that is hard enough. cycling would be impossible.
