haven't read all of this thread admittedly, but am a Canon rep.....you can't beat a proper camera over the shit pic that a phone can produce. If you want crap snaps, use your phone, if you want decent quality pictures, use a camera! The key is in the sensor and the lens....if you want good quality pics for repro use a camera, if you want crappy snaps of the moment/memory, a phone will do the job!

My iphone 5 takes good photos especially outside, but on holiday I take digital camera too, as battery like on iphone is awful so want a back up.

Phone is fine as only camera but I have had digital camera for about 3 years and my old phone (blackberry) too awful photos. Buy a camera if you don't think phone is good enough.

MidniteScribbler · 13/11/2013 21:41

I've got my good camera (just upgraded from a 50D to a 6D yesterday..... squeee!). I've also got a Canon IXUS which is absolutely brilliant as my handbag camera. The IXUS seriously does almost as good as my big camera, but lots less bulk to carry around on a daily basis. Lens quality is what turns just a camera's in to brilliant cameras. You can have the top of the line DSLR but if you put crap lenses on it, then you've got nothing.

I've got my iphone as well, but it's not a patch on my Canons.

And no, I don't work for Canon. Grin

I love my Canon SX220

cardibach · 13/11/2013 22:07

I only used my iPhone for photos when on holiday in India. My photos are easily as good as any camera I have owned. I won a competition with one of them...
If you want a camera, get one, but I think unless you want to take proper 'art' pictures, camera phones are more than adequate.

MmeLindor · 13/11/2013 22:16

I've a iPhone 5s and the photos are excellent. I rarely use my DSLR now.

Dd has a Nikon - a so called 'bridge' camera which is between the simple point and shoot cameras and a DSLR. It's really good and we tend to take it if we want a bit better pics. Wouldn't say they are much better but zoom is amazing on it.

Depends what you want to do with it. For everyday snaps, I think a phone is ok

MaidOfStars · 14/11/2013 09:16

Mme If you find it easy to downgrade from a DSLR to a phone camera, I suspect you weren't using the DSLR properly or effectively. Did you have many lenses?

MurderOfGoths · 14/11/2013 10:45

current I was all ready to laugh at that, but it's quite a nice bit of kit. Though at that price you could probably get a decent compact camera.

TheTwistedYarn · 14/11/2013 11:22

OP, I asked a couple of professional photographers about this, because I need to learn to take decent photos for my blog. They said that the camera on an iPhone/iPad is fine. (Can't comment on other brands of smartphone.) They said it's more important to learn how to take decent pictures in terms of lighting, composition, etc.

specialsubject · 14/11/2013 11:36

I have a small Canon camera and it is brilliant. I have a very small call-and-text- only phone which is also brilliant.

two different things. Never seen a decent picture taken on a phone.

SoupDragon · 14/11/2013 12:30

Never seen a decent picture taken on a phone.

I find this very surprising. I have lots of decent photos on my phone.

Bunbaker · 14/11/2013 15:02

"I have lots of decent photos on my phone."

Are they still on your phone or have you loaded them on to your computer? I often find that an image on the phone looks fine but when I download it onto a bigger screen it looks quite grainy.

SoupDragon · 14/11/2013 15:11

Both.

SoupDragon · 14/11/2013 15:26

They are on a par with photos taken with a compact digital camera.

jacks365 · 14/11/2013 15:32

My camera is about 5 years old my phone much newer so my phone takes far better pictures. The technology moves on so quickly that keeping up will be expensive.
