AIBU to want to remove my six year-old's tonsil stone?

It's massive. I can't stop asking her to show me it because I just want to poke it with a cotton bud. But I feel I would need a valid medical reason to do so, and 'because it's driving me mad and I love picking scabs etc' is not valid enough.

Her breath smells like vomit. But I recently split from her dad, and can imagine his appalled reaction to her telling him I poked cotton buds down her throat. Just not worth it. But soooo tempting!

Ah, it's possibly stress related then. Get her an antibacterial, non-alcoholic mouthwash or get her to gargle with salt water. It will go away by itself eventually.

kelper · 12/11/2013 22:43

My dh gets these, and he pops them out with the other end of a spoon

FutTheShuckUp · 12/11/2013 22:46

Some of you think this is bad? I'm traumatised by a thread I've read elsewhere and learnt stuff I truly wished I hadn't BlushBlushBlushBlush

BadSeedsAddict · 12/11/2013 22:46

Berstie, possibly but she has always been more prone than the others to urine and ENT infections. Do you think she'd be able to gargle, at six? She can do it with water but I struggle to gargle with salt water without slightly swallowing it, which is horrible! Smile

Strumpton-come and join us in the dark world of. ... [thunder crash. da da daaaaaa] sporn...

BerstieSpotts · 12/11/2013 22:48

Hmm. I think aquafresh do a children's mouthwash. I slightly swallow it too but I do it with a minty one. But a children's one shouldn't be too disastrous if she swallows a bit by mistake and it might help, with the breath if nothing else! My morning breath is horrendous Blush

I get infections too - how weird. I wonder if it's related somehow.

TheBuskersDog · 12/11/2013 22:49

How have I never heard of these?

BerstieSpotts · 12/11/2013 22:49

I do find it gets worse with stress. My mum is "woo" and she reckons the "throat chakra" is to do with communication so she says I get them when there's something I want to say but can't for some reason. Obviously all based on superstition, but interesting.

breatheslowly · 12/11/2013 23:01

I get these, but can't see them until they pop out. I wish I could as I would much prefer to remove them than have them festering away.

iwantanafternoonnap · 12/11/2013 23:16

I have just had to watch youtube clips on how to get them out and got carried away with all sorts of other really nasty squeezing pussy things!!

Film you getting them out Grin

IhaveNoOpinion · 12/11/2013 23:20

I used to get these regularly and enjoyed poking them out.

18 months ago, I had two impacted lower wisdom teeth taken out under ga and when I was able to open my mouth again, I noticed a stitch in either cheek and have never had another one since. The bastards sewed up my holes didn't they. Sigh.

Balaboosta · 13/11/2013 00:17

I'm scared to google this - v squeamish - but my son (ASD) has had vomit-smelling breath and something seems to be irritating his mouth / throat. Could someone tell me what this is in language appropriate for a wuss?

KissesBreakingWave · 13/11/2013 00:31

Well, this thread is going to cost me another night watching gross-out videos on Youtube. Blackheads, botflies, chiggers, ingrown hairs, cysts, the lot.

BadSeedsAddict · 13/11/2013 06:32

I love that I have started a sporn thread! IhaveNoOpinion, I would have felt like that too Grinhave just made my friend feel sick describing it to her.

Balaboosta, your tonsils have craters on, some worse than others; see if you can have a look and see any white 'spots' on his tonsils. They will be food that has got caught in the craters. It compacts and gets really smelly. In case I haven't been clear, I will not actually remove the ones in my daughters throat! Even though I'm getting all itchy thinking about it.

Jengnr · 13/11/2013 06:38

I'd have it out, no messing.

I too am quite gross in these matters.

Balaboosta · 13/11/2013 07:15

kisses I'm still reeling from sootikins...

GetOrfGetStuffed · 13/11/2013 14:11

I have tonsil stones and am due to have my tonsils removed soon. I'd say get rid of it ASAP as, if your dd is anything like me, she'll have feelings like tonsillitis when stones develop, especially with big ones.

I'd also have a word with a gp about a referral to the Ear, Nose and Throat dept to have a look as things can get worse later in life :(

Lots of luck x

TheCraicDealer · 13/11/2013 16:43

Can't you get a picture of it?! I always have a feel of my tonsils while in the shower, sometimes one of these bad boys pops out. 'Mazin'.

TwinSis is the same (both had quite a few episodes of tonsillitis as kids, leads to scarring and pitting) but has been put on the waiting list to get her's removed. She's admitted she's going to be sad seeing the potential for tonsil stones go.

BadgersRetreat · 13/11/2013 16:51

I used to have lots of holes in my tonsils that i used to clean out regularly with a cotton bud. The day the bud went in the front of my tonsil and out the back i went to the doctor!

Had the buggers whipped out.

BadSeedsAddict · 14/11/2013 07:02

Babybearsmummy, thank you! Smile
BadgersRetreat, that really shocked me, holes all the way through?! Argh.

CommanderShepard · 15/11/2013 11:49

Yep, some tonsils are more cryptic than others (touch wood I've never had a stone, while I've lost count of DSis' bouts of tonsillitis and/or stones). She's desperate to have them out but apparently they won't consider it until she has two tonsillitis bouts in a year :( (she has one a year)
