DC on level 1 and I think the lower half of the class. Does this sound correct?

Do you mean book band or national curriculum level?

Broderieanglaise · 12/11/2013 00:17

Book band, as in Oxford reading tree.

Mine's on level 5 (green) and my Reception child has just been given a level 1 (pink).

Did your DC get reading books last year? This seems low for Yr1.

BlackeyedSusan · 12/11/2013 00:22

level one pink. Boy, young for year.

oneplusoneplustwo · 12/11/2013 00:38

The variation seems huge at this stage. My son's in year 1 (November born) and he's on stage 8 purple, along with 2 other boys. Other children are still blending phonics or just starting bringing proper books home. Most kids seem to be on stage 4-5 from what I can gather from the teacher.

My eldest was a very slow starter with reading but soon caught up, got level 5 in SATS and is now doing well at secondary school.

They're so young still in year 1. Plenty of time ahead of them to get to grips with reading.

sparklysilversequins · 12/11/2013 00:48

Dd has just gone up to Year 2 on Level 9. Level 1 seems quite low for year 1.

HoratiaDrelincourt · 12/11/2013 00:57

Green (5?), June boy. I get the impression he is in the top group.

CrohnicallyTired · 12/11/2013 07:09

I work in a year 1 class, and we have a handful of children (maybe 4 or 5, mostly SEN) on pink, and some are up to level 6 or 7, so a real spread. I think book bands 3-5 correlate with children's actual ages at this point in the year.

So if half the class are on pink, rather than just a few, that doesn't sound correct at all.

StrictlySazz · 12/11/2013 07:17

I read with dd2's year one class and there is one child on pink

Remainder are spread yellow to purple. Mainly blue/green.

funkybuddah · 12/11/2013 07:21

Orange which is a bit above her age range according to the website, can't remember level though. However my son was the same, excelled in Reading, average at best in Other subjects.

I wouldn't be concerned at this age of it was mine but if you are see the teacher and ask for help spring him additionally at home. I know I wouldn't know where to start.

Chattymummyhere · 12/11/2013 07:24

We are on pink in reception level 1+ I think it is as it's the ones with words as most have worked past the picture books.

I would of thought most children in year 1 should be past the pink band as it's pretty easy stuff once whey know their phonics and how to blend

FreakoidOrganisoid · 12/11/2013 07:25

Ds is on jade

Dd was on gold at this stage of y1, moved onto white in the jan. She has now been on white for nearly two years and is very frustrated so there's a lot to be said for moving through the levels more slowly.

CloverkissSparklecheeks · 12/11/2013 07:36

I think it varies hugely, DS1 was on L11 and DS2 has just gone onto L5 although started Y1 on L2. L1 is low but I have noticed that children on the lower levels (like my DS2) going into Y1 tend to suddenly move along very quickly.

Retroformica · 12/11/2013 07:42

DS 1 was free reading year 1 but he was a total bookworm. DS 2 and ds3 wrre more laid back and stage 5 which I expect is just a spot above average.

cranberryorange · 12/11/2013 07:49

Level 1+ songbirds and Rigby star phonics phase 3 which he really struggles withConfused

youbethemummylion · 12/11/2013 07:53

It doesnt matter what other children are on it only matters if level1 is right for your child. If they find it too eady talk to the teacher if it seems about right for them then do nothing the teacher will move them up when ready.

Shodan · 12/11/2013 07:56

DS2 (just turned 6) is on turquoise, which I think is level 7, although he is reading chapter books at home.

However- he just seemed to pick it up really easily. It was a shock to me as his elder brother (who is now nearly 18) was always one of the lowest band readers for his class group.

There is a huge variety of 'normal', tbh- so long as the teacher hasn't flagged up any concerns I wouldn't be worried.

redstripeyelephant · 12/11/2013 07:58

DD is on orange. Her friends that I know of seem to be on blue, green or orange.

As someone else said as long as it is right for him and he is making progress then I wouldn't worry too much. But if you feel he's not making progress then speak to the teacher. Do you read with him at home?

Sokmonsta · 12/11/2013 08:02

I can't help I'm afraid as our school use a mix of reading schemes to form their own. So dd's level is 8. Which I assume is directly related to the national curriculum rather than a reading scheme. But the book she is currently reading is ort songbirds Book band 4 blue according to the back of the book.

Monetbyhimself · 12/11/2013 08:04

It's irrelevant what other children are doing. Do you have concerns ? Have you spoken to the teacher? What tupe of books does he read at home ?

CloverkissSparklecheeks · 12/11/2013 08:55

I think it is relevant in a way as if you had no comparisons and the teachers are not giving you the necessary info regarding your child it would be hard to judge if there is an issue or not. Some schools seem not to inform parents then suddenly in Y2 there is a problem when the parents realise the child is behind.

I am not suggesting that it is a problem if a child is below average at this age but as a parent I would want to know this and how I can help.

Worried123456 · 12/11/2013 09:08

DD is 5 in July and on turquoise book band.
