to think my boss is wonderful?

So today my car died. I ended up rescued by the AA, towed to my dealership, having to get a replacement and arrange s rental. I got in at 2 pm. My boss knew as I had kept in touch. At the end of the day I went to her and asked if I could make up the time half an hour a day to make things easier. And she said I didn't need to make it up at all as it was an emergency and I couldn't have helped it. AIBU to think she is great?

YANBU! She sounds great, and sadly unlike lots if bosses these day. Thing is, you end up putting in more hours for bosses like her out of loyalty, whereas those who count every second lose out on goodwill eventually.

Mylovelyboy · 11/11/2013 22:43

She is great. But I am sure you are great at work and she realises that, so its her way of thanking you for what you do.

dementedma · 11/11/2013 22:44

Well,yes and no.
She is a kind and understanding human being. That makes her a good person.
She understands the day to day issues of her staff. That makes her a good leader.
Both of which, are far more important than being a good "boss"
I am actually a bit shocked that her behaviour warrants comment as being exceptional. If this is exceptional, what kind of horro bosses are out there who wouldn't have acted in the same way?

Sparklingbrook · 11/11/2013 22:52

That's really nice.

I was 7 months pregnant and got stuck on the motorway for 2 hours one morning, getting into work about 11am-2 1/2 hours late.
A meeting had to be called between bosses to see if I had to make the time up, it lasted about an hour. Sad I didn't have to but the length of the meeting indicated it wasn't an easy decision.

pointyfangs · 11/11/2013 22:58

I agree it should be the norm for a boss to be understanding, but I came in 6 hours late so I do think she is a bit special. And yes, I would go above and beyond for her, she has earned it. Sad that not everyone is as lucky as I am!

YANBU.

I have a lovely boss too, last week she agreed I could take some leave at short notice, and bought me wine and chocs as a thank you for finishing a project which had required some earlies/lates & weekends (sometimes with DD in tow).

It makes all the difference when someone is approachable and understanding and you feel appreciated.

ChocolateWindmill · 12/11/2013 00:24

Sparklingbrook - several managers had an hour long meeting to discuss if you should make up 2 1/2 hours of lateness?! Are they mental?! Surely they wasted more time collectively in deciding than you did in the first place (through no fault if your own!)! Grin crazy.

CanucksoontobeinLondon · 12/11/2013 00:49

She sounds great, OP.

BigKidsMadeMeDoIt · 12/11/2013 01:02

Its not the same thing but my old boss did the most wonderful thing for me. I work in retail and so the day of the annual stock take is a big deal. I was a department manager and he was the overall shop manager. It was totally compulsary for me to be there.
But the stock take was the same night as my university 10 year reunion that i was desperate to go to. My boss rearranged the whole stock take because he knew how much it meant to me ( i should say it didn't put anyone else out) .
I went to my reunion and met the man i am marrying this coming saturday.
My boss is coming to the wedding.

Sparklingbrook · 12/11/2013 06:49

That's the world of banking for you Chocolate. Wink

YANBU, she sounds lovely.

Euphemia that is dreadful! In my current post I have had 4 different bosses and they have all been fantastic. I know how lucky I am, because I've also had two really awful ones...

I was caught up in the Icelandic volcano too, and my boss at that time was great about it too - it was classed as 'exceptional circumstances' and did not come out of my annual leave allowance.

Oddly enough all my colleagues here are lovely too, and every time someone leaves (which happens often, nature of the job is that it's a step up to other things although my position in IT is not so I'm always there) we always end up recruiting another really great person.

Euphemia - I was travelling back from a work trip when the volcano went off, ended up getting home a week late. I had a week's leave scheduled for when I got back. Boss was fantastic - told me to put a bottle of something strong on expenses, do what work I could remotely, and to take my holiday when I actually got back home. You always go an extra mile for a boss who does the same for you.

On the other hand, I've had a boss dock my annual leave because I was late getting back from a work trip - the airport had burnt down!

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 12/11/2013 22:59

my bosses were great. dm was at end of life. line manager kept asking if I was ok and to take whatever time I needed. I didn't be to be one of those people who are off ages so soldiered on. When she was really going, he just said text me then forget work for as long as you need. I know the statutory time is a few days. I had two weeks. And he hasn't put it on as sick so my absence record won't take a hit. Everyone else thinks he is a twunt but I won't hear a word against him.

pointyfangs · 13/11/2013 08:54

DH's boss was like this when his dad passed away very suddenly. If anything happens to my parents (which is unfortunately distinctly possible) at least I know that I will be supported at work.

Good bosses have staff who will be ill less often, go through fire for them and will stay in the job. It's taking the long term view of making the organisation work, it's just a shame so many people only think of the short term, or just don't give a damn.

dementedma · 13/11/2013 22:37

Good bosses are great leaders who reap the rewards by having a loyal staff who would do anything for them. We would for ours. We love him! Lol
