To be sick of not being able to afford the heating on

Thankfully no children involved.

We are yet to have any form of heating on this autumn/winter as we just cannot afford the bill. We only have central heating, no fire. I'm currently sat in a t-shirt, thick jumper, dressing gown, jeans, 2 pairs of socks, and slippers and I've got a hot water bottle and I'm frozen. The thought of another 4 months of this makes me want to cry.

Hiddenhome most houses were like that 30 years ago, central heating and double glazing weren't common so it wasn't so much the cost per unit stopping the warmth.

I have no heating so am similar to the op, I cannot recommend the heated blanket enough. Honestly it's brilliant like a hug from a massive hot water bottle. I got a groupon offer for mine.

I'm pretty disgusted with Married comments on this thread.

Easy for you to slag off other people's lifestyles from your heated ivory tower .

usualsuspect · 13/11/2013 18:35

People ate telling you they can't afford to use their heating and you bang on about fags and booze.

Sod off to the DM comments page.

valiumredhead · 13/11/2013 18:35

Usual-ime it's usually the people who have no experience whatsoever of things like this who come up with the most ludicrous suggestionsHmm

usualsuspect · 13/11/2013 18:39

YY,Valium.

I expect she gets the housekeeper to turn her heating on and off.

usualsuspect · 13/11/2013 18:40

I grew up with no heating,It was bloody miserable.

Not the good old days.

greentshirt · 13/11/2013 18:41

Not sure i've seen this mentioned so far, but when I lived in a flat with storage heaters (which was fricking freezing) I used to use a halogen heater. They only cost as much to run as having a light on. They are pretty crap in terms of heating a whole room but they do keep the area you are sitting in nice and warm. They are only about a tenner to buy so worth a try.

ExcuseTypos · 13/11/2013 18:43

Married Of course it's more expense today, in comparison to 25 years ago.

We've been in this house for 10 years. Our bills have more than doubled( I do keep a spreadsheet) and in that time we have installed a more efficient new boiler and more loft installation. Bills are have gone up a ridiculous amount.

We are very lucky that we can afford it but I feel so, so sorry for those who can't afford to heat their houses. It makes me so cross that a basic need isn't being met for more and more people. We live in the 4th richest country in the world ffsAngry.

notagiraffe · 13/11/2013 18:43

Look, Married worked for six weeks at a nationalised energy company decades ago and she actually works near a housing estate where poor people blatantly drink beer. She knows all about poverty, its mickey taking, spongey underbelly and all about how ineffective nationalisation of core services is.

Strangely quiet though on the capitalist ethics of fleecing the poor to keep the rich even richer, though, when asked directly about this upthread.

valiumredhead · 13/11/2013 18:45

Halogen heaters cost more than a light to run, they are economical but aren't that cheap.

valiumredhead · 13/11/2013 18:46

Broad band is super cheap, even if you gave it up what you saved wouldn't heat your house for very long!

notagiraffe · 13/11/2013 18:49

Of course in the good old days when poor people had a spunky attitude to adversity and knew their place, many of them died off in the big freeze of 1963.

Perhaps a similar cull is in order. The poor aren't so much required in this digital age, and I hear this year's winter is going to be really long and hard. Survival of the fittest. Mahvellous. Pass the Bolly, Married.

usualsuspect · 13/11/2013 18:52

We should all do the rich people's ironing, that will keep us warm.

olgaga · 13/11/2013 18:53

You'll have to heat 1 room, then turn that off and heat the bedroom for an hour before bed. Decent warm clothes to wear at home and in bed, ie fleece, not thin pjs, hot water bottles.

I know how cold it gets when the boiler packs up, reminds me of me childhood and I do wonder how on earth we all survived it. I do remember a hell of a lot more bronchitis and assorted chest diseases, but that was probably more to do with both parents chain smoking in an unventilated house.

In those days it wasn't cost but lack of appliances, heating systems and insulation.

Hope your situation improves.

SPsDoesntLikeChaffingFishnets · 13/11/2013 18:54

I couldn't get a gas fire due to not having gas in the house. Its just all electric. Everything I used takes electric.

I cant afford to pay £5 a day to keep the house warm while in bed so its cold when we are up. Plus the £2/3 I pay each time I use the washer.

£5 a day for just storage heaters would cost around £150 a month alone. That's with out using electric for anything else.

I pay at least £30 a week into the meter without heating. So would be looking at nearly £300 a month to do that and keep storage heaters on.

Ah usual was right then...

usualsuspect · 13/11/2013 19:48

I'm even more disgusted with your posts now.

You haven't got a fucking clue have you.

usualsuspect · 13/11/2013 19:50

There are people who do work and struggle to afford to heat their homes.

But don't let that stop your spiteful DM rant.

valiumredhead · 13/11/2013 19:52

I think married is Katie Hopkins!

hiddenhome · 13/11/2013 19:53

Bloody hell, married, you've got some front Shock

My colleague and friend works full time in the care home. She receives minimum wage. She has health problems, including rheumatoid arthritis. She can't afford to put her heating on. Me and dh are currently trying to source a safe paraffin lamp that she can heat her small lounge with. Her son is heating his room with candles.

usualsuspect · 13/11/2013 19:53

I won't tell you what I think she is.

Crowler · 13/11/2013 19:55

Uh, smug?

usualsuspect · 13/11/2013 19:56

You got the 4 letters right.

marriedinwhiteisback · 13/11/2013 20:00

I am deeply sorry for those who budget and can't work and use resources sensibly and who are still cold

Why don't you stop reading selectively and start having a proper debate? There have been many many suggestions on this thread about how people can make their situations better but rather than take them on board it's a constant whinge against the government because everything is the government's fault. Not everything is the government's fault or the fault of private enterprise. If it weren't for private enterprise do you think that clothes (Primark, Matalan, etc) would be so cheap? Do you think that Ebay would exist? Do you think you would have Poundland? No you wouldn't you would have the state dictating the unit price of everything
