To think this is really selfish?

Have been wondering why neighbour's tv sounds so loud lately, now having been into their house I know why. The houses are semi-detached and they've put a massive tv on our adjoining wall. Not only that but they have cut into the wall so they can set the tv in and make it flush with the wall their side. There must hardly be any wall left between us and them!
I'm usually in and out during the day but I've been stuck in because of the weather and it's been really annoying (I don't watch daytime tv, I was hoping to enjoy some peace and quiet).
AIBU to be cross about this? They had two other walls they could have put their chav tv on!

YANBU. Nothing you can do about it, but really thoughtless.

Our NDN is 75 and deaf as a post. We always know what she's watching. Drives me nuts.

Actually if they have cut into a party (shared) wall they should have had a party wall agreement to make any significant changes. I would post in legal to get one advice.

Depending on how much they have insetted it, building control may take a view on the safety of it.

I'm sure they need your consent before doing so as it's a party wall. I would defo look into the legal aspects. It's unbelievably selfish

OP that must drive you mental. I think they are selfish. Why should they inflict their giant noisy tv on your life. Dont know what to suggest really.

Do they actually know how much it's bothering you? Talk to them and ask them to turn it down. If that doesn't work your council will have a noise team that might help

If it's really loud and it's not temporary (which it doesn't sound like from your OP) then would you want to contact the Noise Nuisance team at your council?

actually, you could go round and say that you can hear their television really loudly now and it's disturbing for you. perhaps they would consider putting up some kind of soundproofing behind it

in fact... are they even allowed to do that? isn't it a party wall?

Agree with all the comments about interfering with a party wall. I live in a Victorian terrace and I know my neighbours have their tv on the adjoining wall.But it's just hung there, not inset, and isn't a problem.

Hi, I know you are all right and there's nothing I can do about it, I just wanted to have a moan and there was no one else here Wink. There's no point in talking to them, they won't care. I've asked them to keep the noise down before and they just told me to get some earplugs.
You've now got me wondering though what my landlord would think if he knew they'd cut into the party wall (we rent they own, they seem to think that means they can do what they like).

They've put a TV in a load bearing wall? I would get legal advice ASAP and tell your landlord.

Wish landlord was a builder then there wouldn't be quite so many botched repairs in this house Grin.

On another note, your neighbour is a thick bellend. Why didn't he just buy a projector?

Have they cut into the actual brick wall or just the plasterboard in front of the wall?

Westie, ah well, now I'm not sure! I suppose they could have built the surrounding wall outwards, although it didn't look any different to our side in relation to the doorway iyswim.

Hope nobody thinks we are selfish, our TV is on the wall dividing our front room from the neighbours'. It is wall mounted to stop the toddler pulling it down on himself. We don't have another wall to put it on, we have a bay window, then the wall where the TV is, then an archway through to our dining room, then another wall which has a radiator on it and is technically our hallway.

We try to make sure we don't have the TV on loud, we can quite often hear next door's very loudly through the wall.
