To get rid of the feckin Disney channel?

My dds (12 and 10) watch all these bloody awful American sitcoms - Good luck Charlie, Jessie, loads of others of similar ilk.

Part of me thinks I should just turn a blind eye as it's probably part of pre-teen culture. But these programmes really annoy me for some reason.

AIBU to get rid of the Disney channel completely so it's not an option? Or is that mean?

YANBU (bloody Jessie) but mine would just watch on YouTube instead. It's their 90210/Sabrina teen witch/bay watch or any of the rubbish we used to stare at watch.

Dancergirl · 10/11/2013 22:57

I'm trying to strike a balance between being too controlling and just letting them watch what they like!

I'm tempted to bin it fairly regularly.

I send them to watch Sky Go through headphones when I've seriously had enough.

It's Jessie that really gets up my nose, the others I can live with.

Mine have recently discovered Nickelodeon and iCarly/Victorious. Not sure which I hate least

DaisyBD · 10/11/2013 23:03

YANBU. DSD2 speaks with an American accent (she is English) as a direct result of the Disney channel.

VivaLeBeaver · 10/11/2013 23:07

My dd has some terrible American accent as well. Not at home, just when we're out. I cringe when she does it loudly in shops. Grin

I wouldn't get rid of the Disney channel though. I think it is normal pre teen culture.

scrappydappydoo · 10/11/2013 23:14

As much as I loathe Jessie and shake it up I was exceedingly happy when even dd drew the line at violetta.
(I do actually like good luck charlie though Blush)

VivaLeBeaver · 10/11/2013 23:16

Dd loves Violetta and is trying to convince me to take her to Rome to see her in concert. Never going to happen.

wheretoyougonow · 10/11/2013 23:16

I love Good Luck Charlie. I know IABU but I can't help it, sorry.

ViolettaFan1ishere · 27/01/2014 17:51

I love all the disney shows, especially Violetta.

itsnotthateasy · 27/01/2014 19:53

I can't stand most of those shows . .. full of shouting screaming kids .. . eeek .. iCarley, Victorious and others are some of the offenders .. Though not sure if both are on Disney Channel as luckily my kids only get to see it when down their Grandparents who have SKY TV , but a few days worth is enough.

Twooter · 27/01/2014 20:29

I binned it and have no regrets! Admittedly, they did just swap to cbbc instead, but at least it's mostly English. It wasn't the American accent so much as the dialogue - dd1 asking for 10 bucks for whatever, and insisting on calling them diapers and candy.

dietcokeandwine · 27/01/2014 20:41

God, I hate it too. 9 yo DS is addicted to Disney XD and all that rubbish and it drives me nuts.

I'd get rid of all the additional Sky channels if I could, but DH would probably divorce me. I am though seriously contemplating only allowing the American twaddle at weekends and limiting mid-week viewing to CBBC only.

RhondaJean · 27/01/2014 20:43

DID YOU KNOW

Very important and changed my life

You can set any channel on sky so that you have to put your pin number in to access it,

I did it with the Disney channel and cartoon network and nickelodeon because I was losing my marbles and now dd2 has to come ask if me or DH can put it on for her. It's really improved my quality of life.

dietcokeandwine · 27/01/2014 20:48

Blimey RhondaJean that is worth knowing - thank you.

Can you do a similar thing with the recording function? DS records God knows how many bloody shows (he has been known to record a show on Disney XD and then the same fricking show on Disney XD plus 1) and is rapidly eating up all the space on the planner!

notnowbernard · 27/01/2014 20:56

Nickelodeon is what reigns in our house atm

Victorious, iCarly, Sam and fucking Cat and the utter drivel that is Fred

Drives me nuts

Don't want to 'ban' though, it just makes them pine all the more

Belugagrad · 27/01/2014 21:05

I don't really get how people moan about these channels but actively pay for them- I know it's hard to take things away but it's not like you don't have a choice.

RhondaJean · 27/01/2014 21:09

If you have blocked a channel, you have to put the code in to play and recordings from that channel as well.

So they can still set it to record but they cant put it on without you putting the pin in.

dietcokeandwine · 27/01/2014 21:25

Thanks RhondaJean that's great.

Belugagrad - I know what you mean and I would happily do without it as I don't watch anything really other than 'normal' terrestrial channels. Thing is it's DH who really wanted the Sky package (for the dreaded sports channels etc etc). All the Disney shite just comes along with it.

innisglas · 28/01/2014 00:13

Mmm, I feel forever guilty that I didn't ban my daughter from watching Sweet Valley High (I presume it not on anymore). Second time I would be much more authoritarian

wobblyweebles · 28/01/2014 03:50

We just took all the channels away. I was sick of paying a fortune for a load of crap. We got rid of cable tv totally and now the children either watch stuff on iPlayer or YouTube.

As a result my American children do fabulous English accents.

They are now obsessed with youtubers like Smosh and Pewdypie and the younger ones watch Minecraft videos.
