Sorry - just that.

Winning unfortunately they have already bought her £70 lelli kelly boots for her birthday, and a Boden outfit.

It is funny really, my own mum will buy her second hand books and toys from the local school fair.

My kids like everyone equally - they don't care who buys what, they love getting stuff as any child does and they can be as gleeful about a tiny second hand plastic fairy figurine as they are about a shiny new bike.

I'm a Tkmaxx girl myself.

Give her a book Smile

Its the thought of a five year old turning their nose up at something that is crazy. Ignoring the bit about thinking its "shite" it has absolutely nothing to do with "not keeping up with the times". Its the fact of setting expectations to a 5 year old they can pick and choose.

To my mind, if the child turns its nose up and decides they don't like it and it gets shoved in a drawer and not used, great, tough luck. That means they don't use anything, too bad. A useful lesson, we don't all get what we want in life.

But anyway the child isn't mine but as we are being asked the AIBU question, I would say a resounding yes VVU, based on the question as posed and the child's age.

My son was never given designer labels, nor fancy technology and he is a very well balanced teenager, skilful with technology, and with realistic expectations about money not growing on trees and being grateful.

Am wondering the same thing. Dh has an iPad. Ds1 a nexus 7. Ds2 uses iPads at school. They are being taught to touch type.
Would ds2 like a hudl or would it just not be fast enough?

josephinebruce · 10/11/2013 22:19

Ok, I'm sorry, your daughter does actually sound adorable and not a brat at all. Why not ask them to buy something completely different and then she can carry on using your iPad? That way the money's not wasted.

DuckToWater · 10/11/2013 22:24

I shouldn't worry, for me it would be the other way round, I find Android phones and tablets vastly superior to Apple.

stopthebusiwanttogetoff · 10/11/2013 22:29

Daisy chain, it will go like this.

"Ok kids you can have half an hour screen time. What do you want?"

Ds will answer either 3ds, mums laptop, mums phone, mum's wii or tv.
Dd will answer mums laptop, mums phone, mum's wii or tv.

And yes the wii is flipping mine, I got it for the wii fit. For MY Xmas from my inlaws, five years ago.

If dd owns a tablet, will she ever choose it?

If not then I do not want it bought. She will learn nothing from it. No life lesson, no teaching her that she cannot pick and choose. It is her half hour screen time. She can use whichever screen she wants.

Ha, yes or mum's work iPad. That started this delightful discussion.

My almost 5 year old would probably not want to play with a different tablet now she is used to my iPad.

She isn't spoilt but it wouldn't be much of a present considering she already has a top of the range tablet to play on and wouldn't be able to play some of the games she can on the iPad. It would be much slower and she would just ask for the iPad I am sure.

But then we are big tech fans in this house and have erm, lots of macs, iPods, iPhones etc.

MollyHooper · 10/11/2013 22:43

I can't imagine there are games that would be available exclusively for the Ipad that wouldn't be available on an Android.

Android actually have a larger selection of games and apps than Apple.

Strumpetron · 10/11/2013 22:44

Bloody hell some people on this thread.

She is 5. She will notice a difference in speed, types and quality of games etc. Who mentioned her turning her nose up at it? That's out of order. I'm 100% sure the child wouldn't do that, but she would most definitely prefere to play with the tablet that is better. It's like a rag doll verses baby Annabelle.

The OP is concerned it'll be a waste of money, which depending on what the tablet is it really could be!

IAlwaysThought · 10/11/2013 22:52

What about a Nintendo DS instead?

usualsuspect · 10/11/2013 22:55

We prefer android In this house.

We don't own any Apple products.

Strumpetron · 10/11/2013 22:57

Apple is one of the things I see reverse snobbery aimed at. It's like people love to look down on people who like them.

usualsuspect · 10/11/2013 22:58

Have you read the ipad love on this thread?

The thought that a 5 year old would prefer an ipad, is frankly ridiculous.

Strumpetron · 10/11/2013 23:01

So you're telling me a five year old isn't intelligent enough to see the difference between two tablets?

Of course they are. They can observe speed, sound, what games they like etc. if she's played an iPad she will compare it. Whether it's going to be better or not and if she prefers it will depend on the tablet.

usualsuspect · 10/11/2013 23:03

You can play games on Android tablets.

Apple is not the be all and end all.

foreverondiet · 10/11/2013 23:04

Yes would know difference between android and iPad but at same time would know iPad more expensive and zero chance of getting own, hence would be happy with android - that's what I meant!

Strumpetron · 10/11/2013 23:06

No one is saying it is but has the OP named the tablet yet?

And android is a broad term, because it's an operating system not the brand of tablet. there's a few android tablets that are really crappy and unresponsive, whereas there are some that are really good.

usualsuspect · 10/11/2013 23:07

She's 5 years old she doesn't need a bloody expensive ipad.

A cheaper tablet will do for playing games.

Strumpetron · 10/11/2013 23:08

No-one has said she needs one you're missing the point. People are just saying she may notice the difference and want to continue using mum's iPad, meaning GP's money has been wasted.

breatheslowly · 10/11/2013 23:10

TBH I think my 3yo would be able to tell the difference and want to use my iPad rather than an android. DH has an android and I can't remember her using it.

Edendance · 10/11/2013 23:12

Why not look up her favourite apps and see if they're available on android too? I was really impressed with the Hudl (sp?) in Tesco today- the screen was much higher resolution than my iPad 2!

Saying that, I would second the idea of a trip out day treat as a more age appropriate way to spend £100 on a 5 year old but it's your choice! Smile

usualsuspect · 10/11/2013 23:15

My grandchildren are just as happy playing games on a kindle fire as they are on their ipods and their mums ipad.

The games are just the same.

BrianTheMole · 10/11/2013 23:17

Why not get an iPod touch so you can share the games?
