I slipped on my stairs last night and landed really hard on my bum. It is so painful that I want to cry. I don't think it is broken as I can walk. Has anyone else done this? How long did it take to recover?

It may well be broken - doesn't mean you can't walk. I did this many years ago. The pain was awful for a few days but it settled to bearable fairly quickly. Not much you can do other than take regular painkillers and get yourself a nice soft cushion to sit on.. Sympathies. Brew

Thanks clobbered

mine snapped in labour difficult to tell how painful it was after as i had a c section so was in a lot of pain anyway

sorry to say it took a long time to heal :( found it more comfortable to sit leaning on one side and on a pillow, but just my bum on the pillow so slightly tilted forward

dancemom · 10/11/2013 14:04

I cracked my coccyx slipping off a wet log - painful! Took weeks to heal but all you can do is take painkillers and try and find positions that work for you Sad

redexpat · 10/11/2013 15:00

Perhaps arnica if it's bruised?

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/11/2013 15:02

My Mum broke hers rushing me to the loo to be sick (we didn't make it) and she blames me says it still hurts now, 30 years later. See a HCP.

Tweasels · 10/11/2013 15:05

Flowers I did this 10 months ago and it's still very, very painful if I sit for long periods. Mine was assumed to be fractured and the GP said nothing could be done, they wouldn't even X-ray.

The GP said 6-12 weeks is the usual recovery period and IIRC that intense pain you have now did only last a couple of days. Hope it feels better soon.

thenicknameiwantedisgone · 10/11/2013 15:07

There is not a lot you can do apart from try not to aggravate it. Argos do a coccyx cushion for about £15 which certainly helps me with mine when I sit on my office chair. For me the most painful bit is sitting on a sofa as the position is usually wrong.

I went to the GP after a few weeks and just got 2 weeks of strong anti-inflammatories which did help but didn't make it go away and it is still sore on a regular basis 6 months later. I do find the cushion helps not to aggravate it too much though.

Coccyx problems normally resolve themselves in a few weeks, I'd try regular ibuprofen if I were you and just be careful for now. See a GP if it's not better in a few weeks.

thegreylady · 10/11/2013 15:09

I twice cracked my coccyx bone and there is nothing you can do apart from take pain killers and wait :(

MikeLitoris · 10/11/2013 15:09

I did mine almost 5 yrs ago and is still painful.

I found it took about 6 months before I could sit/stand up again with out a pain. I still get a twinge if I sit on it to long.

A coccyx pillow saved my life. Would have been abke to work without it (office job)

thing1andthing2 · 10/11/2013 15:22

Mine was damaged during the birth of my ds. It took about 10 months to heal fully. I sat on a special cushion for 6 months which I took everywhere with me. Google coccyx cushion and you'll find loads of option at about £20.

captainBeaky · 10/11/2013 15:42

Thank you all for posting. It hurts so much when I sit and even more so when I stand from sitting. I work in a school and I am dreading tomorrow because of the low chairs and constant bending. Ive got strong painkillers and voltoral gel. I'll just have to brave it out. Thanks for advice.

MrsBungleScare · 10/11/2013 15:46

Oh no! It might be broken. I broke mine and could walk by falling down the stairs whilst drunk

The pain from going from sitting to standing was immense.

I'm sorry to say it took months and months and still hurts sometimes now.

Strong painkillers should help a bit .

I really feel for you!

BitOutOfPractice · 10/11/2013 16:36

Oh you poor thing . I broke mine sliding down the stairs on a tea tray while drunk on rum in a tragic accident and bloody hell it hurt

Sadly it's one of those breas that they can't do anything for - just wait for it to heal. Have you got any really strong pain killers or rum which I know works because I didnt feel a thing till the next day

Really feel for you

LadyVetinari · 10/11/2013 16:46

Poor you Sad. I believe I broke mine as a child - it hurt a lot for about a year, but doesn't bother me at all now.

Marylou2 · 10/11/2013 17:12

Poor, poor you.I hurt mine in labour and can still remember the disconfort. Standing up after sitting was the worst. Took about 2 years, hope you're feeling better much sooner!

PresidentServalan · 10/11/2013 17:33

I did it in February - I cracked my coccyx and it still hurts sometimes. Nothing the doctor could do, he just prescribed painkillers and diazepam

Sad Sad I damaged mine when I had DD. Take ibuprofen and invest in a coccyx cushion. Do see your gp if it doesn't ease soon. Yes, if it is broken there's not much to be done. But if you have displaced it, it can be hoiked back into the right position. You'd need specialist physio for that - not a general physio - or possibly an orthopaedic surgeon. Hopefully it's just a bad bruise - a bruised bone can take a long time to heal.

Yuppers · 10/11/2013 18:28

Ouchy, I did the same as MrsBungle, fell down the stairs on my bum while drunk. Oh the next day was agony. It did hurt lots for a while, then for a few years after. 10 years on and I'm fine.. that's not too much help tho is it?

captainBeaky · 10/11/2013 19:11

Really appreciate that you've all taken the time to reply
