To want to use a fucking litter tray?

We have two cats. They are kept in at night, encouraged out during the day. They do not come in for at least 2 hours before bedtime.

One (or both) keep shitting on the floor, in the bath, in their bed, on the stairs Hmm

Yesterday my pregnant friend came round and used my toilet and went to dry her hands on a towel which had a fucking cat shit in it Confused I can only assume one of the kids picked it up off the floor and put it on top of the radiator. Mortified is not the word.

Tonight, I picked up my coat (which had been knocked on the floor) to find it covered in cat shit. Hmm

I want to have a litter tray available to them permanently. DH thinks I am being unreasonable and he does not want a litter tray around for the youngest to get to instead they can just find random piles of shit round the house

I have litter trays for my cats; they are welcome to come and go as they please. They will come in from outside to use the trays (least they don't upset the neighbours). My cats also stay in at night. My partner doesn't love my cats and he tolerates the trays but there is no way he would be content for them to use the rest of the house as a toilet! Your husband is being unreasonable, and kids can be trained to stay out of litter trays! I can't believe he would rather they just do it where they please!

Boltonlass1972 · 09/11/2013 23:21

No you are not being unreasonable. How long have the cats been doing this and is it a change in their routine at all? Maybe one is unwell or recent changes can upset them so they start soiling like this you can get a litter box with a lid and swing door which is harder for cats to get to. Can you limit the cats to a closed room perhaps?

OvaryAction · 09/11/2013 23:23

get one with a lid so the kids can't touch the poo

He probably thinks he'll have to take his turn in emptying a litter tray but can pretend he hasn't seen the random shits around the house.

*Disclaimer: I may be projecting my ex's attitude onto your DH

Monochromecat · 09/11/2013 23:24

Er, no litter tray? That's why they are pooing round the house. Of course they need a litter tray.

theeternalstudent · 09/11/2013 23:24

seems to me you don't have a choice. The cats are telling you that they need somewhere to go.

Surely it's more hygienic for your family if they have a litter tray that they can use........... Your DH just doesn't want to clean it.

Mylovelyboy · 09/11/2013 23:26

Your post has really made me laugh. Not the fact your house is caked in shit but the way you told it Grin. I think your dh is being unreasonable. Need a litter tray toot sweet I think.

ThisWayForCrazy · 09/11/2013 23:27

Newforest, he suggests the problem is that I let them in the house during the day. But it's very obvious to me that the instances are mostly happening at night.

Boltonlass, one is getting on and she's a bit lazy. She's always had the occasional poo in the bath Hmm but was quick and easy to sort. This is ridiculous though!

I saw the ones with the lids and they look good.

I am going to sort it on Monday when he is at work (I am working 8-4:30 tomorrow)

It sounds like they are in for about 12-15 hours a day? You can't expect them to hold it til the morning when they go out, particularly as cats often poo straight after eating (so evening meal, then poo). Get a litter tray and keep it in toilet, leave door ajar, have air freshener, change regularly. It won't smell. It's just mean not to have them have somewhere to go; they will have worried before pooing on towels etc - they're very clean. When our toilet door got shut to accidentally my boy got v distressed before he weed in our washing basket! It's not fair.

ThisWayForCrazy · 09/11/2013 23:28

Monochrome, I've grown up with and or had cats all my life. They've never had a litter tray permanently accessible. And it has never been a real problem before.

Bigpaws, the longest they are in is 7 hours, overnight. But yes, you are right, they have their food last thing.

I've reserved on at Argos. And I'll assure him I'll clean it like he does all the housework anyway not

Couldn't you get a cat flap so they can go out and poo at night? Aren't they meant to be semi nocturnal anyway? I always thought people put their cats out at night, not shut them in?

ThisWayForCrazy · 09/11/2013 23:59

We are not allowed to install a cat flap unfortunately.

i am the opposite i hate having a litter tray in the house, even if it means i have to be vigilant about making sure cat can get out if he needs to. So he knows that the spare room window is always open so he can get out of there if he needs to, but because he has to jump off conservatory room he cant get back inside once he is out.

no help at all i am aware
