HMRC unpaid tax letter

Soooo we got a letter saying we'd underpaid by 4k this week. Not very nice in tone with a slip to send a cheque. They said they'd already sent a form explaining the details. They hadn't,it was a lie.So we had no details just a demand.

Should add Dp's mum is seriously ill with cancer and he's already worried sick. He's up to his eyes in work as she's going into hospital, very busy tying things up at work for when he is with her.

So he rings and they say info hadn't already been sent, they go on the same day from diff deps.Angry

So info does arrive and it seems they've put him down as earning 40k more than he actually does which his P45 clearly shows. He'd changed jobs and apparently the computer can't add diff columns so it has to be done manually. Somebody can't add and doesn’t understand the basics hence the mistake.

No apologies for staff incompetency, the stress or anything.

Dp now has to spend time writing and sending in paperwork for their incompetency.

We're staggered. My 10 year olds could add those sums and enter them correctly. Aibu to expect an apology and to HMRC staff to be able to add and to have basic computer skills if they're going to send out shitty letters making demands?

HMRC and my work place have cocked up my tax code every year for the past 3 years. First year I underpaid by £1K, fair enough. Second year they said if underpaid again - no I hadn't. Spent hours on end on the phone to them. Did it happen again this year?! Course it did!

It is so so frustrating. I ended up overpaying this year and so they have finally sent a cheque.

Sorry to hear of your troubles.

It's staggering.

Dp said if anybody at his work made an error like that it would be seen as serious.

Basically because it's HMRC they can be as crap as they like.
