Just that really. We get such a lot of junk mail it all goes straight in the bin but tonight some bloke just turned up to collect it. He just looked resigned when I told him. Have just googled and realised reps have to pay for these catalogues! Now feeling like a heartless bitch as must be a thankless and ill paying job - but may just be pregnancy hormones! Please someone tell me he will be ok really and someone will have bought something from his blinking catalogue!

I bin anything that is put through my door

I say no thanks and close the door on anyone who comes to it trying to sell to me

I feel no guilt

And neither should you

Justforlaughs · 08/11/2013 18:09

My Dh does this on principle, as he hates catalogues coming through the door, and thinks they should get the message. I, on the other hand, always leave it outside the door until it goes mouldy because no-one bothered to come back for it!

Pancakeflipper · 08/11/2013 18:10

I share your guilt even though I know it's pathetic to feel the guilt.

I left the Kleenez catalogue out but the builders hid it from view with their equipment so it was never spotted and now they never post us one. Which is good in some ways cos I do not have to remember to put it out. But I do not get to look at pointless products that tell me I cannot live my life without them anymore.

Famzilla · 08/11/2013 18:11

I bin anything that comes through the door not addressed to DH and I. There is a sign saying no junk and we are not a mail holding centre either.

It's the chance people take when they put their shit into your house without your permission.

ShatnersBassoon · 08/11/2013 18:12

It's the risk they take when they put them through. I usually put them straight back out with no regard for keeping it dry.

WooWooOwl · 08/11/2013 18:12

Don't feel guilty, all business comes with some risk, and people throwing away catalogues that they put through doors when they haven't been asked is just a normal risk of doing betterware.

KerwhizzedMyself · 08/11/2013 18:13

YABU. That's the risk he takes by not bothering to ask if you want the catalogue.

laza222 · 08/11/2013 18:13

ÃŽf someone puts unsolicited junk mail through your letter box, it is not your responsibility to keep it safe. I wouldn't have known he'd be charged either so would have done the same.

KerwhizzedMyself · 08/11/2013 18:13

So don't feel guilty Grin

HellsBellsnBucketsofBlood · 08/11/2013 18:14

I leave them outside if I remember, but occasionally I do bin them. I have asign on the door though that says we're not interested in dorrstep sales (which I view this as) so you'd think they would know better than to put it though the door.

I do like to occasionally see what tat I could spend my money on though. But then the lakeland catalogue is also god for that (which I am somehoww on the mailing list for !!)

daisychain01 · 08/11/2013 18:17

grizzabellia You didn't do it on purpose and you certainly weren't to know they pay for the catalogues which they deliver at risk (I would have had the same reaction, so you aren't the only one, honest! I also bin most stuff.

I guess all you can do in future is leave it in the plastic bag on your doorstep so they can reuse. No way were you being a heartless beach x

grizzabellia · 08/11/2013 18:18

I know, I guess it's just probably not a job anyone would choose to be doing on a friday night for a pittance - you have to admire people for trying! I think is partly that just spent loads of money earlier doing all the xmas shopping online and was thinking how i just frittered away money he would probably have to trek around in the rain for days to earn. Think am probably overthinking this though!

Ah, I always feel bad for the betterware man.

Especially because I loved the little sample polish tins we used to get when I was little. We polished for ages. My mum never seemed to mind.

Back to the present day. Here's a bloke trying to make a buck/living. I don't want to be the person who makes it harder.

Steben · 08/11/2013 18:25

Oh Jesus I didn't realise that! Feel awful now Shock

Chocovore · 08/11/2013 18:40

I used to be an Avon rep and it really hit me in the pocket when people binned them. You order and pay for a set amount so if you don't get that book back you can't reuse it for someone else who does want to buy. I'd much rather they left a note with the book saying they weren't interested and not to bother putting the next one through. Saves time, money and and resources.

Steben · 08/11/2013 18:44

After reading thread I will have far more respect for them. I hate making shitty jobs shittier even if they are a bit annoying Hmm

MrsCakesPremonition · 08/11/2013 18:46

Catalogues go straight back outside the moment I find them, otherwise I would probably forget to put them out on the right day.

DH patiently steps over them until he can't bear the sight of them cluttering up the doorway any more, at which point I suspect he quietly puts them in recycling.

Just a thought - if I put a post-it note in the pack saying not to leave a catalogue in future, would it be a)ignored b)offensive c)taken as a helpful comment.

grizzabellia · 08/11/2013 18:57

To be fair, it might help if this was clearly stated on front of catalogue - usually I am coming in from work tired and irritable and anything cluttering the hallway automatically goes in the recycling!

OP posts:
KerwhizzedMyself · 08/11/2013 18:59

But why should someone have to go to the effort of sticking a note in a piece of unsolicited junk mail to ask the junk mail to stop? The Avon or Betterware person manages to knock to collect the booklet, so why not knock before you leave it and introduce yourself. You'd find out who didn't want one that way and I bet you're more likely to get sales from people who've actually met you and had a quick chat with you.

GoldenGytha · 08/11/2013 19:26

I always answer the door to Betterwear, Kleeneze and Avon,

Never buy anything, but I think it's mean to just bin/recycle them or shove them straight back out the door, they're just people trying to earn some money.

CommanderShepard · 08/11/2013 19:35

I don't want the catalogue, therefore it is junk, and like the rest of the junk it goes in the bin.

I would give them the cost of the catalogue just to stop them posting it through the door!

specialsubject · 08/11/2013 19:40

unfortunately the fact that the rep is getting fleeced is their problem. They always say 'well, just leave it outside' but that shouts 'not at home, burgle us'.

I try to give one warning face to face that I don't want the thing. After that it gets immediately recycled. THAT stops them coming again.

if they did ask first it wouldn't happen - but who would say yes to this overpriced tat?

Mylovelyboy · 08/11/2013 19:43

OMG ive binned the Betterwear before. Was sick of the thing hanging around. Did feel really bad though. Only did it once as when the poor sod came to pick it up he was soaked with rain and it was dark outside and I fibbed that I didnt remember receiving it Blush

hedwig2001 · 08/11/2013 19:48

I have repeatedly left notes, politely asking them not to leave further catalogues. Completely ignored!
I don't want damp manky magazines on my doorstep for days.

Delilahlilah · 08/11/2013 19:49

I wouldn't throw them, I would put them outside. I do think these companies are shitty for making the reps pay for books when they get the least out of each sale. Reps are just trying to earn a living.
