What's coddle?

JinglingRexManningDay · 08/11/2013 16:33

Its like a stew with sausages and rashers in it.

bundaberg · 08/11/2013 16:35

of course it is.

ophiotaurus · 08/11/2013 16:37

Sounds fine to me. If she's still hungry could she have toast or cereal? That's what my mum said to me!

Mim78 · 08/11/2013 16:40

Sounds good!

JinglingRexManningDay · 08/11/2013 16:41

I have pointed out the fruit bowl and the bread bin but according to her she needs chips because she didn't get a proper dinner, just soup Hmm

I'm half tempted to just serve her soup tomorrow.

If she gets pocket money/allowance she can use what she has left if she wants to buy food over and above what everyone else is having.

Slainte · 08/11/2013 16:46

Oh, I miss my mum's coddle. Would love a bowl of it now, and yes, that's definitely a dinner.

Why is a 14 year old eating dinner at half four in the afternoon??

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 08/11/2013 16:48

Can I have the recipe

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 08/11/2013 16:50

Tell her she can have the money if she washes up

JinglingRexManningDay · 08/11/2013 16:53

They get out at 3:15 every Friday and we live 10 mins from the school. We have dinner between 4 and half past.

She gets her pocket money on a Wednesday but spent it on a furry jacket with ears on the hood.

It is very early. Won't she have had lunch not long ago? Toddlers here ate lunch at 1.30pm, and will eat around 7.30pm this eve.
If I get in at 2pm I wouldn't eat dinner just as im in...

In regards to qu- sure caserole and bread sounds like food to me.

JinglingRexManningDay · 08/11/2013 16:59

1lb of sausages
1lb of rashers
2 onions
5 carrots
1 red pepper
1 yellow pepper
Celery
2 packs of tesco stew meal makers
(Tablespoon of curry powder if you like)

Brown the sausages.
Cut and put all veg and meat into a big saucepan, put in stew mix cover and cook on a low heat for 3/4 hours.

Could you bargain with her that if she has fruit and toast now, then she could have some chips later on this evening as an extra? That way she doesn't see them as a replacement for healthy food, but as an occasional treat?

Sounds lush - but Googling it doesn't provide a recipe! What else do you put in?

DorothyGherkins · 08/11/2013 17:02

Which region does coddle come from? Mumsnet is an ongoing education, isn't it.

SnakeyMcBadass · 08/11/2013 17:03

My MIL makes coddle without browning the sausages. It gives me the boak. I could really go for a Macari about now

JinglingRexManningDay · 08/11/2013 17:05

She has a packed lunch at 12:30 in school, breakfast before she leaves at 8:20. So I do think its a long gap, especially as she plays sports in the evenings.
She can get whatever she likes in fruit or yoghurts. She would usually have something small around 9:30 like a sandwich or some salad.

Jingling, that sounds proper lush. Definitely making next week.

Floggingmolly · 08/11/2013 17:06

Since when have peppers featured in coddle? Shock

JinglingRexManningDay · 08/11/2013 17:09

Oh I don't like unbrowned sausages. They look like zombie willies Grin
Coddle is from Dublin AFAIK.

They don't traditionally Flogging but my mum always put them in and I follow her recipe.

I just can't imagine eating that sort of food at 4.30pm in the afternoon, maybe that's what she finds odd? Would it be better to have a sandwich after school and then eat later or does that interfere with the sports Confused.

I agree casserole & bread is a good meal, but I couldn't stomach it at 4.30pm Grin.

JinglingRexManningDay · 08/11/2013 17:14

It has never bothered her before. I'm starting to wonder is there a reason for wanting to go to the chipper Smile

OP posts:
bundaberg · 08/11/2013 17:14

the time is surely irrelevant. esp if they always eat at that time.

the child has eaten a bowl and a half of it already! she doesn't really need chips too
