To find the Poppy Girls tacky?

OP posts:
BoneyBackJefferson · 07/11/2013 21:37

Why do you find them tacky?

SarahAndFuck · 07/11/2013 21:38

What are they?

BoneyBackJefferson · 07/11/2013 21:40

from the telegraph

CloverkissSparklecheeks · 07/11/2013 21:51

I really cannot believe how unkind some people are, they are kids FFS! I also don't understand how it is tacky!

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 07/11/2013 21:56

Bloody hell. They are children with mums and dads who are risking their lives for their country. They are having a wee stab at raising some money to support forces people. How very dare they.

SnakeyMcBadass · 07/11/2013 22:00

I don't find them tacky. Not my thing, but I appreciate they are trying to raise money

CloverkissSparklecheeks · 07/11/2013 22:02

Well said ILetHim I actually thought they were pretty good, not my thing but I seriously cannot imagine why anyone would say anything bad about it.

Drgonzosattorney · 07/11/2013 22:03

Bourdic really? Heart of stone. Don't understand why you would find this tacky. Rude!

CloverkissSparklecheeks · 07/11/2013 22:05

I would imagine their families/schools etc are extremely proud of them also. A lovely thing to raise money for also, I will be buying thats for sure.

Gigondas · 07/11/2013 22:05

Agree with ilethim and I am far from liking kids dressed up or performing for whatever reason.

Lilacroses · 07/11/2013 22:08

It's a lovely idea. Hope they raise alot of money for the cause. It must mean alot to their families that they are participating.

MarshmallowGuzzler · 07/11/2013 22:09

YABU.

NotMeNotYouNotAnyone · 07/11/2013 22:40

Hmmm a bit tacky but it's a good cause and unlike many singers these days they can actually sing.

WooWooOwl · 07/11/2013 23:18

I'm a big supporter of the poppy appeal, so if it raises money then I can't argue with it.

I don't like it though, it's just another spin on the army wives singing, which felt like another spin off of X factor. I'd rather see people who have a big talent and desire to be in the music industry sell records, rather than people who just happen to be connected to the forces in some way and have been thrust into making records to make money.

morethanpotatoprints · 07/11/2013 23:26

Of course its tacky.

Tacky sells, raises lots of money for charity, bingo.
The sadness is, there must be many more talented musicians whose families are in the forces. I feel Sad for them.

CloverkissSparklecheeks · 08/11/2013 16:34

How do you know these girls do not have a big talent or desire to be in the music business, we have not seen enough to judge that with just one song.

I am confused - why would you feel sad for the other musicians morethan? Obviously sad if they have family away in the forces but I don't think thats what you meant?

morethanpotatoprints · 08/11/2013 16:53

Clover

I have heard enough to realise they don't have a big talent and have judged enough from one song. I'm sure the producers wouldn't let it out if it wasn't the best the girls could do.

I feel sad for the musicians who are good and have families who are serving, who may have been less tacky, but granted probably not been as profitable for the charity. This is pretty much what I meant.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 08/11/2013 16:55

I haven't heard about them or listened to the single but if proceeds from their single do go towards funding the Legion’s charitable work, "providing welfare for thousands of serving and ex-service personnel", how is that tacky?

MOIST · 08/11/2013 16:55

Not so much tacky but a bit twee.

And I'm so over the whole singing fisherman/army relative/halifax advert shite.

comedycentral · 08/11/2013 17:43

Shock So shocked at your attitude OP!

LtEveDallas · 08/11/2013 18:16

I'd really like to know what is 'tacky' about it? Maybe OP has used the wrong word by mistake?

It's a nice enough song - taken from a Disney film I think. I vaguely know one of the girls and have heard her sing before - as far as I remember she had a perfectly lovely voice (considering she's just a normal kid with no training). I really don't get why it's tacky? Tacky to me is any number of bump and grind bollocks in the charts these days - which this certainly isn't.

Mawgatron · 09/11/2013 09:21

I hate to say it but I agree. Watching it on the one show the other day made me think exactly the same thing...

CloverkissSparklecheeks · 09/11/2013 13:09

I have heard one of the girls perform before on her own when visiting some friends who took me to a concert and she is an incredibly talented musician (not just singing, instruments too). In a group of singers it is not so noticable how good any of them are, this particular girl was a million times better than she sounds in the group.

Elsiequadrille · 09/11/2013 13:17

I was expecting showgirls or similar, then. No, not tacky I don't think, but I haven't listened to their song/video, and don't intend to

NoComet · 09/11/2013 13:47

Yes, I was expecting older less clothed young women. That's a group of young girls just like any church might have singing at a remembrance event. DD1 and the primary school have sung at BEL fundraising concerts.

To make a record and appear on TV is twee, possibly, tacky, no.
