My daughter (10 years old) is studying the Victorians in school. And decided to use Google (during an ICT lesson) to find a picture of Prince Albert for her project. You can see where this is going, can't you...

So I end up having a conversation in the car about why a picture like tha appeared, and which bit was the Prince Albert bit... Much to the digust and blushes of my 15 year old son...

I should probably feel more outraged... but to be honest I had to try not to laugh...

Think the school will be resetting their server settings tonight Grin

CharlieAlphaKiloEcho · 06/11/2013 18:27

I thought they would have a better filter tbh.

But then, the words probably on the ban list.

CiderwithBuda · 06/11/2013 18:29

I think that must happen with every year group studying the Victorians really.

I seem to remember something similar when DS was doing it.

Hulababy · 06/11/2013 18:29

Ooops - looks like a webpage got through the internet security. Sounds like you have taken a pretty sensible approach though.

Sadly, it happens. No system is ever 100% robust. Impossible to be with the size fo the internet these days.

Good time to take about staying safe on the internet - what to do when faced with something they didn't expect, something worrying or concerning.

And remind her she should inform her teacher if things like this occur - then they can report the page to the web security people/company and it can go on the restricted list.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 06/11/2013 18:30

I think you should give them a ring tbh and let them know they need to sort their filters

Hulababy · 06/11/2013 18:30

And as I am doing Victorians with Y2 at the moment, and I am doing the ICT eleement - one for me to look out for and monitor!

teacherandguideleader · 06/11/2013 18:31

I had this happen in one of my lessons - I was mortified. Only it was a lot worse than what you describe. And it was teenagers - I never got that lesson back! I had assumed anything dodgy would be filtered. I reported in straight away and it was quickly resolved.

Sammie101 · 06/11/2013 18:31

Is it bad that I don't know why googling Prince Albert would be bad? Confused

AuntieStella · 06/11/2013 18:32

I think I'd get the complete giggles if DD told me something like that!

If she didn't mention it to the teacher at the time, then I probably would let the school know about the lapse in the filter.

< Not that I want an excuse to talk dirty to the teacher who leads on ICT, and watch a fit young man squirm. No, not at all.>

Sammie101 · 06/11/2013 18:33

Oh my...Shock

OddBoots · 06/11/2013 18:33

Pfft!

Oakmaiden · 06/11/2013 18:34

The school are aware - my daughter showed her teacher the picture. She is pretty sensible really. I guess it isn't something you would think of that might be a bit dodgy - but it is why I always check the first 2 or 3 pages of Google images before letting children use Google - and only let them search for certain terms!

AuntieStella - oooh, there's a point... It is quite a presentable young man who is in charge of the ICT at school...

I once asked a class of Year 7s to find out what Dogger was (area in the shipping forcast) as it was mentioned in a book we were reading. About five of them went home, did their research and wrote down definitions of dogging in their books instead!!!! Horrified does not even begin to cover it. I had to rip the pages out. They obviously didn't have very good controls on their internet at home.

Vagndidit · 06/11/2013 18:39

Oh...my...Google. I had no idea. I live such a sheltered life!Blush

DrSeuss · 06/11/2013 18:39

One of my Y8 French class put "French rugby player" into Picsearch. I suppose some of those young men may enjoy rugby. They certainly like balls.....

A group of year 9 boys tried to search for 'big boobies' then were freaked out when they got pictures of policemen instead.

They thought it was the filter and they'd been caught. In fact, they misspelled the search term and put 'big bobbies' in. Grin

Oakmaiden · 06/11/2013 18:47
