She is 12.

She would like to go to town with a few friends to an overpriced firework show. With no adult.

I have said no.

She is DEVASTATED.

AIBU?

Yanbu!

diddl · 05/11/2013 17:08

Does she really want to go, or is it just an excuse to be out & about with friends?

You know what, if it doesn't work, then it doesn't tbh-whether it's that she's too young, or it's too late on a school night or whatever.

DameDeepRedBetty · 05/11/2013 17:10

She sounds too immature for this. With you all the way on the putting of the foot down.

diddl · 05/11/2013 17:17

I suppose you haven't got any FWs in & it's too late to get some let her have a few friends round?

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 05/11/2013 17:17

All of you saying no, you do realise that not only are you being unreasonable, you are also deliberately ruining their lives!

Any of the other parents willing to take the girls? If not I would say its a little late to be out without an adult or a phone x

StrangeGlue · 05/11/2013 17:26

I think it's too late on a school night for a 12 yr old.

I am extremely laid back but for me no lift there and back and no mobile would be a definite no no.

it's dark. if midsummer then maybe but fir me the no phone is key.

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 05/11/2013 17:33

20 min bus ride there, display, 20 min bus ride back gone 9pm.
12 years old?
Not a chance in hell! YANBU!

Sparklymommy · 05/11/2013 17:35

Okay, with updated info I totally agree with you that it should be a no. She sounds quite immature and with no phone, lift of adult companion the answer would be no.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 05/11/2013 17:36

Early teens is a tricky transition time responsibility wise.
Lots of fine balances to decide on
You've said it's too late for a school night etc etc. which is completely fair enough especially when she has a little bro to consider, as well as other considerations people have mentioned.
Maybe there'll be something alternative to consider at the weekend?
Or next year !

Pitch black, 9pm, public transport, no phone...not a chance!

MammaTJ · 05/11/2013 17:45

Ah, I was going to say I would have let my DD out under those circumstances, but she has lost her phone. That is the clincher, YANBU!!

CharlieAlphaKiloEcho · 05/11/2013 17:47

OK, she isn't feeling too hard done by as our neighbour is having some. But that's a whole other thread....

Some warning would have been nice...huge gash on hand from rescuing the very unhappy cat from his hidey hole!

Glad not everyone thinks I'm BU. I was right on the edge of guilt but not willing to back down

DuckToWater · 05/11/2013 17:49

I think 12 is a bit young to be making their own way out and back of an evening. Maybe I'd consider it if I could drop them off and pick them up again or another adult was doing so.

Mim78 · 05/11/2013 17:53

Yanbu

mitchsta · 05/11/2013 17:59

Out until after 9 on a school night? No adult? No phone? No chance.

YANBU.

mum11970 · 05/11/2013 18:05

My yr8 (12) dd wanted to do the same, as op, last Saturday. My answer was no and dd thought I was being unreasonable too.
