To think this year's M&S 'festive' advert is utter garbage?

Disclaimer: remember i said festive and not the C-word.

I cringed the whole way through. The only performance from Helena Bonham Carter that I've disliked. Roll on the John Lewis one. Grin

I liked it too!

TigOldBitties · 05/11/2013 12:11

I actually like Rosie in her bra and knickers, seeing that over the Christmas period will make me put down my selection box once in a while.

I have to admit I was instantly sold on this because of the dog. It looks like one ours, so cute!

NoComet · 05/11/2013 12:19

My DDs (12&15) will love it!

Not sure that's the demographic they are after, although both have M&S clothes.

Alice (there is a lot of wonderland about), Aladdin (and jasmine does almost wear her underwear) and the Wizard of OZ.

All done with a slightly dark Snow White and the Huntsman/Twlight vibe - they'll love it.

Will it increase sales, well we walked through the big Cardiff M&S all done up for Christmas and only bought very practical men's trousers to replace worn out ones.

NoComet · 05/11/2013 12:21

Oh and DD2 is always playing with a DFs dog that is just like that, so she'll give the ad extra brownie points for 'cute'.

Minus points from me, I'm not a dog person.

ShadeofViolet · 05/11/2013 12:22

The problem with M&S is it has the reputation of being frumpy I have no idea why.

The drop in sales is probably due to some of its older customers dying without them being replaced by new ones.

Thebestgrandma · 05/11/2013 13:11

No wonder M&S profits are down again!
Why do they never consider us grandmas?? We do like to wear attractive clothes with style but not mutton dressed as lamb.

There is a whole untapped market out there - 50+ with disposable income - come on Marks lead the way!

noddyholder · 05/11/2013 13:17

he'll need that hat for xmas

AscoyneDAscoyne · 05/11/2013 14:03

I like it, much more memorable and festive than last years offering.

mitchsta · 05/11/2013 14:18

I really wanted to like this, but I'm in the "utter toss" camp I'm afraid. Keeping my fingers crossed that the John Lewis one isn't a massive let down.

leezl · 05/11/2013 14:25

Hahaha "suddenly, underwear!"

womblesofwestminster · 05/11/2013 14:27

Sexist crap.

And no kids - aren't kids what christmas is all about?

girlywhirly · 05/11/2013 14:55

Well, if you take it as a bit of fun and no more the ad is OK, but it isn't festive really. There is no point me wanting a bra like that as there will not be a cup size big enough. Unfortunately (for M&S and any other retailer) I am pretty immune to marketing, I will exit a shop without buying anything quite often if there is nothing I want or like. I'm also far to cynical to believe that Christmas is magical.

WilsonFrickett · 05/11/2013 15:09

I kinda liked it but it didn't make me want to buy anything except maybe a dog. Which obviously I'm not going to do. So it's a fail from me.

BOF · 05/11/2013 15:22

I love it.

noddyholder · 05/11/2013 15:24

Nothing makes me want to buy anything anymore advertising wise its an age thing I think Grin

ViviPru · 05/11/2013 15:29

YANBU.

I agree with EyeOfNewt, very lazy, wishy washy concept IMO. No aspiration, no warm fuzzies, even if you 'quite like it' you don't want to climb through the screen and get IN it like you do some other flagship Christmas ads.

TwitTwooShoe · 05/11/2013 16:48

The only thing it has made me think about is this adorable puppy (we're rehoming him soon). That is it. Not underwear, not carpets, not anything else.

Darkesteyes · 05/11/2013 17:55

Just seen another Mner post on the Xmas board that the John Lewis ad will have a teaser up on you tube on Friday and premieres during X Factor on Saturday. I follow JL Snowman on twitter and he keeps tweeting asking whether its time to get out of the freezer yet Grin I love HB Carter in this but i think Rosie in her bra and pants is going to make some of us feel depressed at christmas hey darkesteyes you are dieting and excersising your butt off every day but heres a reminder of what you could/should look like Its like a celeb magazine shoot opening up on the tv screen. I like the fairy tale references and love the little Westie though. I love Westies.

OneUp · 05/11/2013 18:50

I like the advert but I thought most of the outfits were pretty crap so it doesn't really make me want to shop at M&S.

Grennie · 05/11/2013 18:52

I don't mind lingerie in Christmas adverts. But the - oh all my clothes just dropped off, seemed pretty crap to me.

mortuusUrsus · 05/11/2013 19:01

It's shite.

And why the fuck did her clothes keep vanishing!?

Allthingsprettyreturns · 05/11/2013 19:08

She is in her undies because she has a range of undies in m and ss

Allthingsprettyreturns · 05/11/2013 19:10

..I love the advert HBC can do no wrong. She is fab in my book

Pachacuti · 05/11/2013 19:10

I like the idea but think they should probably have stuck to one story rather than trying to blend Alice + Arabian Nights + Oz into one advert. And none of it seemed to be done very well -- the special effects didn't work very well and when she was "running" away from people chasing her she was just vaguely jiggling and waving her arms about. Plus every time they ran out of ideas they just took all her clothes off again.

There was the kernel of a good idea there, but the execution was lacking.

Fluffytent · 05/11/2013 19:28

I didn't like it.

BUT!!!!

...if it was HBC in Rosie's place I think it would have worked ... But quite rightly I imagine HBC said to them, "go @!?! yourself if you think I'm going to float about in my undies!"
