After feling like crap and coughing for weeks I finally went to the docs last week. Turns out I have a chest infection (possibly linked to something obscure). I've had more antibiotics - last dose tonight.

Monday I had off sick.i felt better in the morning but felt crap again after lunchtime. I need to let them know shortly if I'll be in tomorrow.

I think I feel ok and a skiver as long as I do nothing and have naps but then I am lazy and that's how I feel most of the time.

So, do I have another day off?

Personally, I'd probably go in and see how I feel. You can always go home if you need to.

If I'm really not well enough to go in I'd just call in sick.

WannaBeANinja · 05/11/2013 08:57

I'd stay off today then go in tomorrow.

Enjoy a day of naps and then you'll feel better tomorrow

Ptoblem is NHS scores sickness by episode, not length. So I was off monday = 1 episode. If I go back and feel crap and take off another day then that's 2 episodes. Then you get stroppy letters and 'You are in the red zone' and threats. Although I've not been off for about 2 years.

Also not the sort of job you can just go home if you feel s bit crap. Easier to organise cover in advance.

Except there probably isn't any cover and my lovely colleagues will be run ragged.

If you have contact with sick/compromised immune system patients then you shouldn't be at work as it would be dangerous for them to get your germs.

Grumblelion · 05/11/2013 09:11

I also work for NHS & we use the same "episode of sickness" system. Having also been caught out with the
warning letter after returning to work a bit too soon and having to go off again, now if in doubt, I take one extra day. It is easier for my colleagues to arrange cover in advance, patients get more notice of cancellation, I don't risk spreading germs to anyone else & don't get screwed on my sickness record because I tried to go back to work before I was properly better.

MOIST · 05/11/2013 09:14

It is arse backwards.

I'm not infectious (I think) (I hope, as it's been going on for weeks)

I don't think you'd be doing anyone any favours by rushing back. If its been going on a while I'd give yourself time to get over it properly before you go back, or you will just be ill again. I find I sometimes don't feel too bad sat around at home when I'm ill, but then get exhausted very quickly once at work rushing around, then things start to go downhill again rapidly.

thecook · 05/11/2013 09:25

I think it would be best if you have the whole week Take it easy.

TheHeadlessLadyofCannock · 05/11/2013 09:31

Could you ask your GP if they think it warrants you being signed off? I think the stress of 'do I ring in sick again or do I struggle in?' contributes to people feeling iller for longer. If you get signed off for a clear, fixed period of time then you know, and your work know, when you're expected back. You don't have to wake up every morning and work out how ill you feel and worry about ringing in sick; you can just rest. You'll probably get better faster without that extra worry Thanks

MOIST · 05/11/2013 09:39

Ah bugger. I don't know. I feel like a fraud until I cough for an hour then have to sleep for 3 hours to recover.
Will decide at lunchtime.

theoriginalandbestrookie · 05/11/2013 09:43

I'd ring in sick. I had to go home yesterday as my DS seems to have passed on his lovely bug where I feel sick and dizzy. I feel ok for about an hour or so pottering around the house - ended up hoovering the carpet in the living room as it's so minging, but then feel woozy again.

It's a different matter feeling ok to mumsnet, make a cup of tea and then sit down again to being in work. Plus we have the same absence system as you so if you are better just having one episode against your name. Finally as you haven't been off for 2 years, now that you are unwell you deserve the opportunity to take the time to get properly well.

MOIST · 05/11/2013 09:52

Am I allowed to go to my friends for coffee?

And pop into waitrose for some bits?

Or does that mean well enough to go gallavanting - well enough to work?

Except i can have a sleep in between and work us 13 hour shifts

OP posts:
theoriginalandbestrookie · 05/11/2013 10:05

Well I have to say I wouldn't feel up to coffee or shopping trips at the minute, but above comments still stand as it's still different from a 13 hr shift and getting yourself on the naughty absence list because you are trying to be dilligent.

TheHeadlessLadyofCannock · 05/11/2013 10:16

You answer your own question in your last line, OP Smile

Unexpected · 05/11/2013 10:18

I don't think going to the supermarket counts as gallivanting, you still have to eat and drink when you are off ill. Other necessary things are things like the school run, trips to pharmacy etc. However, I think coffee with friends is probably pushing it a bit.

ephemeralfairy · 05/11/2013 10:38

My work operates the 'episode' sickness policy too, I have been caught out by it. (I was actually meant to have a slapped-wrist meeting with HR about it this morning...but because they are so incompetent they didn't actually manage to notify me in advance so I have refused to go and it has been rescheduled for Thursday....)

But I would stay off til you def feel better. Going to work while ill is totally counter-productive in my opinion. You won't work to your usual standard, might make potentially serious/costly errors and infect others too. Staff in my dept are dropping like flies at the moment because one person decided to be a martyr come to work while still unwell.

Stay home, rest and feel better soon!

DameDeepRedBetty · 05/11/2013 10:44

I'm only a very small employer, but I'd rather not have burning martyr sick people at work. My view is go away and come back when you're any use to us again Grin

I had a similar chest infection thing that hung around for ages two years ago, I had to take a week and a half off myself, so I know how exhausting it is. My staff were absolute stars and completely took over between them, which would have been difficult if I'd infected them with my lurgy!

MOIST · 05/11/2013 14:10

I called in sick. Waiting for occ health to phone me back.
