To think that as I do 99% of the cooking I should get more say in what cooker we have.

Just that really.

We need a new oven as ours is dead. DH thinks its the right time to ti-jig the kitchen and get a range cooker.

I like my electric one and want to keep it electric.

DH thinks that we should discuss it. I think I should get to choose because I cook and bake on it every day.

You're not serious...

ArbitraryUsername · 04/11/2013 16:16

You can get an electric range cooker.

RevelsRoulette · 04/11/2013 16:16

I agree with you.
Why does he want a range? not that I blame him, I think they look lovely. but looking lovely isn't as important as being most use to the person who actually does the cooking.

It's like a non driver expecting to tell the driver which car to get, not caring that it has to be the one that the driver finds most comfortable, but wanting it cos they like yellow Grin

YouTheCat · 04/11/2013 16:17

Tell him when he does 50% of the cooking, then he gets a say.

sunbathe · 04/11/2013 16:19

Does he cook much?

ShadeofViolet · 04/11/2013 16:24

I just want a nice intergrated one like we already have. Nothing massive.

Don't get a range unless it suits your cooking preferences - even good ones can be a total PITA. My parents insisted on getting one despite the fact that I am the only person who uses the kitchen properly and pleaded with them to get a (cheaper) nice 2 tier oven with a separate grill and a plate warming thingybob instead. The result is that the left hand compartment goes unused, half of the hobs are superfluous, and I don't have enough space to make Christmas dinner properly in the poxy right hand compartment Sad.

Sirzy · 04/11/2013 16:25

if you do the cooking you should get to pick what type of oven. If he picks something else then he also picks to take responsibility for all future cooking!

LisaMed · 04/11/2013 16:30

my h insisted on choosing the vacuum cleaner 'because cylinder cleaners hurt his back.'

guess how many times he has vacuumed? To the nearest 10? Precisely zero. And I use a brush instead.

Don't let him choose. He is choosing 'aga saga' lifestyle. You are doing the actual real life stuff.

(have just got the vacuum I want, am v v v happy)

echt · 04/11/2013 16:35

Your choice. DH does all the cooking, so when we had the kitchen re-fitted, the choice of cooker was his. I still don 't know how the oven-y bit works.

chartreuse · 04/11/2013 16:55

We spent the summer at MILs and My blood pressure rises every time I think about having to cook on the aga. It was a nightmare. I cannot express how much I despise them. As a heater - fine, as a cooker they are not fit for purpose. I have a Smeg dual fuel range. Now THAT is a proper cooker.

DH would love one, over my dead body is all can say.

sunbathe · 04/11/2013 17:08

Before we moved into this house, I'd often have a bath in the evening and read a book.

When we replaced the bath in this house, dh said he wanted a deeper bath. We got one. It doesn't have that nice slopey bit so you can relax (and read a book). I hate it and haven't used it after the first time.

I wouldn't mind, but dh doesn't use it either! Sad Confused

cuttingpicassostoenails · 04/11/2013 20:21

Do you mean an Aga/Rayburn/Esse type of range or one of the gas/electric ones...Stoves, Leisure type? The if it's the latter you can get one with gas hob and electric oven which might suit you. I'm an Aga/ Rayburn fan but not everyone likes them.

Your husband needs to put up or shut up. Unless he is doing a great deal of the cooking and food prep he really has no place telling you what kind of cooker you cook his grub on. Would he expect that you make the decision about what type of drill he uses to put up the book shelves, make the furniture and all those other jobs that I'm sure he does on a regular basis?

MoominMammasHandbag · 04/11/2013 20:30

Another one who's husband lobbied ferociously for a certain Hoover "Because it has the best suction." Never mind that it weighs a bloody ton and I have two flights of stairs and a ridiculous amount of floor to clean. And no, he is not a regular user. Fortunately I have delegated hoovering duties to the teens in return for pocket money, how they grumble!

Plomino · 04/11/2013 20:48

I happen to have an LPG / electric range . Love it . But only because it's right for me , and I chose it . Actually I had coveted it for YEARS and then found it in a fantastic discount warehouse as cancelled order , still in its packaging . I may actually have squealed in glee . But I still chose it . We have an agreement in our house , DH and I . I chose the cooker , and the washing machines , because I happen to use them most , so I know what we need . He chose the tractor , the hedge trimmer , chainsaw and paddock equipment because he uses those most , so he knows what works for us there. If I'm going to be using something daily , I should at least be happy with it .

flatpackhamster · 04/11/2013 20:57

Tell him that's fine so long as you can pick the car he goes to work in every day. Then pick a pink Nissan Micra with eyelashes.

The person who does all the cooking should get to pick what they cook on. Common sense, surely?

BTW, electric ranges are easily available. Rangemaster do electric ovens with a choice of gas, electric or induction hobs.

APartridgeAmongThePigeons · 04/11/2013 21:01

He/she that does the cooking calls the shots I am afraid.

Suck it up Op's husband.

TwoTearsInABucket · 04/11/2013 21:02

100% your choice

ArbitraryUsername · 04/11/2013 21:04

We have a dual fuel range. It's just a big cooker really. Nothing like an aga.

curiousgeorgie · 04/11/2013 21:07

I have a range and loooooove it so I'm with him!

BadgersRetreat · 04/11/2013 21:14

the cook gets to choose - when we did our kitchen the cooker was 100% my choice as i'm the only one that uses it. Makes sense, surely?

My mum had modern range cooker in their old house - I think it was a Britannia? Was v big, V expensive and she loved it.

Shodan · 04/11/2013 21:31

DH and I had a furious whispered row about the design of our new kitchen while the designer was actually there. (I hasten to add that I dragged DH into the sitting room after politely excusing us for this row.) He wanted to put drawers in the space that was deliberately being left for the bin and suggested putting the bin either in front of the fridge Hmm or by the dining table.

I won, by pointing out that I do 95% of the cooking in this house and therefore would be using the bin the most and so should have more say.

So yes, you should have more say. (and you can tell your DH that there is a precedent for this)

FryOneFatManic · 04/11/2013 21:49

We ended up with a dual fuel range as that's what fitted the gap, when we moved in.

Never again, too many burners and I want the oven on a higher level.

We are now in the process of having a new kitchen fitted, and the oven/hob choices have been mine as I do the cooking (although the DCs are now being taught).

Never get any kitchen appliances just because they look good, the practical aspects must be considered first or you could end up resenting the item.

Bearleigh · 04/11/2013 22:08

I agree that you should have more say as you do the bulk of the cooking. And because we had a Britannia range cooker which I chose and really disliked: all style over substance and a real pig to clean. I am far happier in this house with my new Neff hob and oven (both mid price and ? of the cost of a range cooker)

PainInTheBum · 04/11/2013 22:23

I'm living with an electric range cooker at the moment and I don't especially like it. The main oven is far too low and I've nearly put my back out trying to lift heavy cast iron dishes out that the side oven is too narrow to take. For all it's extra size I've not felt that I am getting that much more useable space out of it IYSWIM.
