to be utterly chuffed with lovely MIL

She hates cooking Christmas dinner - to the extent where I've been putting off spending Christmas with StepMIL and FIL because it just doesn't feel like Christmas with lamb stew eeked out with frankfurter sausages because she's under-catered (happened first year we did it together). So... DH and I said we'd love to spend Xmas with them this year but didn't want to put them out, would they mind if I cooked (they know I love to and so we were hoping it wouldn't come across in a bad way). They are delighted, buying the turkey and booze and I have free reign in the kitchen Grin best PIL ever? This way we get to do the whole traditional thing but with DH's lovely folks and with the yorkshire puddings and turkey that make Xmas for me She's even boasting to friends at church that she doesn't have to cook and that we will be up there :) This could have gone very wrong indeed!

I'm made up because DS1 and DiL want to come to us for Christmas.

And they are going to stay overnight.

And they will have DGD with them who is due in a few weeks time.

I have all the stockings ready already! Smile

reelingintheyears · 04/11/2013 01:54

Big fat roast with crackers.....EASY

And a pudding which we never have all year!

I love Christmas.

lessonsintightropes · 04/11/2013 01:58

Ahhh Reeling so lovely to know I'm not the only one to get so excited about it! My ILs live quite a way north of us and we only get to see them 3 - 4 times a year, we've just had a lovely weekend with them and got to see DH's DGMa and uncle and aunt for the first time since we got married back in April. I'm really looking forward to Christmas and spending it with my other family Grin

YABU to praise your MIL on MN Shock

Don't you see she has been laying a trap all these years, cooking dismal Xmas dinners to force you into volunteering to cook from now on? And she's bragging to her mates at church about it!

And reeling how very dare you get stockings for your DGD - you're just stopping DIL and your DS from starting their own little traditions with their own little family.

Honestly, you lot need to get into the festive spirit and start lambasting your control freak MILs!

AdoraBell · 04/11/2013 02:12

YANBU in the léast, Go, cook, be merryGrin

reelingintheyears · 04/11/2013 02:22

greyhound the stockings are for the DC , they still want one each, I'm not doing one for DGD cos she isn't even born yet.
But she does have a few little presents.

reelingintheyears · 04/11/2013 02:26

And I know what her name is!

lessonsintightropes · 04/11/2013 02:27

But greyhound it might make it easier to understand if I explained she let me watch Eurovision when we were last up for a weekend (this is me clearly BU)... I owe her something nice! It's clearly all a terrible trap Grin but one I'm very pleased to be part of Grin

reeling - if you know your unborn DGD's name go and post it on Facebook asap Grin

ilovecolinfirth · 04/11/2013 06:05

Awww, what a lovely thread!

paxtecum · 04/11/2013 06:24

OP: You and your ILs are like a breathe of fresh air.
Long may it continue.
Thank you for posting a postive IL thread.

Best wishes to you all.

WooWooCaChoo · 04/11/2013 07:27

Oh lovely, everyone's happy :)

We had mil and fil round last year, we loved it so much that we've got them and DPs grandparents this year. Bit worried as his grandad has dementia that is only getting worse, but it means a lot to mil and DP to have him there.
DP is cooking though, no way I could!

gobbynorthernbird · 04/11/2013 08:21

PIL, DM, BIL and his partner are coming to us. DH will cook, helped by MIL if necessary. BIL and my DM will bring good wine and chocs. The DCs will clean up after dinner. I will sit on my arse and drink and watch telly. It will be brilliant.

stinkingbishop · 04/11/2013 09:12

Aw, it's nice to have a nice MIL thread (though I am borderline addicted to the horror ones!)

Mine is currently breaking my heart. We moved 200 miles away last year, with newborn twins (their only DGCs) so they see them infrequently. They were scheduled to come up in September, but then she got shingles. It was rescheduled for last month, but then she broke her foot. She is now getting so desperate she is hobbling up this weekend on crutches and apologised in advance that she won't be able to take them for walks (she's 80!!) but will just sit on the sofa smiling at them and is that ok?

And to top it all she's bringing a ham Grin.

Bless her. In fact I am going to have a chat with her because she is so hyper sensitive not to offend/tread on my toes and she really doesn't need to be. She's super.

An infinitely better house guest than DM, but that's a whole other story...
