To be heartbroken and feel like a rubbish mum

Bit of a long one, but need to vent.

DD was diagnosed with a heart condition at 8 weeks old which has been monitored closely since, she's now 15mths and has, over the last few months, been very upset at hospital appointment and completely panics and breaks down when she realises where she is.

While we're there, she's allowed breaks between checks and monitoring to have a play in the playroom and go for something to eat etc to try to calm her down. She's fallen in love with a sit on bouncing zebra in the play area, so o.h and I decided to have a save up and get her one for christmas as her present this year, especially as she's been very brave (in our opinion!)

Anyway, after a few months of saving, we rustled up enough and decided to swing by toys r us after her hospital appt yesterday. While we were there, we went to have our sandwiches in the café, got back to the cardiology unit and I'd left my bag. Ran back to the café, found my bag under the table, but my purse with my savings and phone (just a cheap, ugly, no-point-in-stealing £20 thing) were missing.

I'm just feel completely heartbroken that some absolute f**r has taken dd's money and there's no way I'm going to be able to save it all back up by christmas. Can't fathom why some people can be so selfish and heartless in a bloody children's hospital. AARRGGHH. Thank you for reading if you've got this far! Off to go and wail again!

Oh ,I feel really sorry for you. There are some complete lowlife in this world Sad Angry

surgicalwidow · 01/11/2013 15:22

That is horrific, you poor thing. This may be a stretch but can you talk to the hospital about what happened, I know where I work there is a 'comfort fund' for emergencies and for when life is just bloody shit and some cash will make a difference to peoples' lives Brew

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 01/11/2013 15:22

bastards

Alanna1 · 01/11/2013 15:24

Hospitals often have cctv all over the place, too - ask.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 01/11/2013 15:24

Shit! Has the store got CCTV so you can find the fucker?

GingerPCatt · 01/11/2013 15:25

My DS was also born with a heart condition doing know a bit what you're going through. All the hospital stuff sucks. Hugs to you and yours.

As for the toy check out eBay or guntree. I've seen good used ones and your dd won't notice or care if it's used.

bsc · 01/11/2013 15:25

I'm sorry about your DD's condition, but I am Confused about why you'd have your savings in cash!

FreakinRexManningDay · 01/11/2013 15:26

Maybe contact some local charities and explain what happened.

Blu · 01/11/2013 15:27

They have them in Argos reduced to £39 - do you have any Nectar points you could put towards it?

Very sorry to hear your money was nicked.

spanky2 · 01/11/2013 15:28

Could you explain to family and friends to see if they could make a contribution for the zebra? Contact a local newspaper . They like this kind of story . maybe a reader would donate? Some people are disgusting .

babybearsmummy · 01/11/2013 15:28

We went to security after the appt, but they said that the person may have already left the hospital, so they took our details incase someone handed them in. Thank you for the Brew we're keeping our fingers crossed, just needed a blubber in the mean time

InsultingBadger · 01/11/2013 15:30

Oh that's awful! Can you get a secondhand one? They wear well and dd won't know the difference

babybearsmummy · 01/11/2013 15:31

bsc we had it in cash as it was £40 and we'd been dropping bits into a pot over a few months e.g £2 or a fiver here and there and I'd shoved it all in my purse to go to toys r us.

bluestar2 · 01/11/2013 15:39

What absolute bastards to take your bag.
I second eBay these things wear very well so hopefully you can find one in your area
Also Argos have the toy exchange on so take in some old toys and you will get a £5 voucher , club are have the points exchange on for toys to double value of vouchers and last suggestion - go to top cashback website and sign up for the free trials on experian and such like like you will get £ 5-9 cashback for 2 of these and the cashback can be boost by claiming it in amazon vouchers. Just be sure to cancel the trials before the free bit runs out.

Fraggle3112 · 01/11/2013 15:40

Some awful people in this world! I second speaking to hospital and family and friends I'm sure someone will help. Sending Thanks for you OP hope you're ok Smile

Thewalkingdeadkr · 01/11/2013 15:43

Maybe someone has a second hand one to give away. Try free cycle.
Could you get one from a catalogue and pay a bit each week?

Nanny0gg · 01/11/2013 15:48

Don't beat yourself up. Even without the stress you're under at present, people can be absent-minded.

I know you don't want to appear to be 'begging', but have you thought about contacting your local paper? If you publicised what happened a) someone might shop the toerag that stole your money and b) someone might have that zebra that they would donate to your DD.

Blu · 01/11/2013 15:51

There are lots on eBay.

MummyBeerest · 01/11/2013 15:54

You aren't a rubbish mum. Whoever stole your bag is a complete and utter shithead.

I am so sorry for all you're going through. I hope your DD feels better soon Flowers

Take care of yourselves!

olibeansmummy · 01/11/2013 15:59

That's awful :( I gave ds's to his nursery when he grew out of it but if I still had it it would be yours! Maybe some kind soul on here is thinking of getting rid of theirs... Or put a message on Gumtree explaining the situation and I'm sure someone will have one!

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 01/11/2013 15:59

Oh no Sad

Have you checked your home contents' insurance? That can sometimes cover your handbag and other valuables when stolen when out of the house. Although, I appreciate that the excess might not make it worth claiming

Alternatively, if your family haven't already done their Christmas shopping, they could club together and get one for DD

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 01/11/2013 16:00

Ooooh - good idea re local paper, nannyogg

Essexgirlupnorth · 01/11/2013 16:00

Have you reported it to the hospital as will have security staff and can see if they have CCTV. Some hospitals also have police that patrol the hospital.
May be worth going to the local paper aswell. Might shame the person into returning the money.

vtechjazz · 01/11/2013 16:02

Maybe keeping the zebra as a special hospital only treat is for the best anyway? Like, it can be the silver lining to her stays there.

I've had things pinched in the past, to say I was furuios is not even close!

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 01/11/2013 16:05

Yes - agree re checking CCTV etc. I know that you say you spoke to,security but the taking your address incase it's handed in is treating it more like a lost item.

It's not lost, it's stolen obviously so they need to be investigating/checking CCTV. The chances of a thief having a crisis of conscious and handing it in is very remote - they should know that Confused

I would contact them quickly as they will probably only keep CCTV for a certain amount of time
