Dressing up as an elderly lady for Halloween - WTF?!

Is it just me or is this really nasty? Heidi Klum dressed up as an old lady "complete with varicose veins"

I get that it's an incredible makeup job and that it's meant to be funny because she is known for her beauty and obviously old women are considered to be the polar opposite of this.

But, if you're not doing the sexy revealing costume thing, Halloween costumes are usually something scary and repellant like a witch or zombie and I'm really taken aback that someone would put elderly women in this category. Genuinely quite stunned actually! And that it's come from a woman too Hmm

Before anyone says it, I do know there are more important things going on in the world and I do have plenty of other, bigger things to worry about :) I'm just amazed by this and wondered if anyone else thought the same.

I thought it was just a really brilliant costume - so well done, how did they do that? I think it was just a costume, not old people are scary/witches/mockable. Literally just something innovative to do and much better than yet another sexy cat outfit.

I think some people are over thinking it or thinking that because it's Hallowe'en it was supposed to be scary - I think it was just supposed to be impressive which for me it definitely was.

I find it wrong to dress up as elderly for Halloween and also to pick on a medical problem with the varicose veins.

SilverOldie · 01/11/2013 18:29

What about if you ARE old with grey hair and wrinkles, should I have gone trick or treating last night? Damn I missed out on a pile of sweets Grin

BlingBang · 01/11/2013 18:41

when I dressed up for Halloween growing up in the UK it wasn't about scary outfits. You could dress up as anything, it was just about dressing up. I've been a Mexican (must have been offensive to Mexicans), a gypsy fortune teller (oh dear must have been offensive to them) and a card tree(hopefully didn't offend any trees). Wonder if any real old people would have been offended by Heidi Klum's outfit - somehow I doubt it.

Letticetheslug · 01/11/2013 18:45

The pictures will come back to haunt her.....poetic justice!!

MokuMoku · 02/11/2013 06:53

Perhaps an elderly person could go as Heidi Klum.

Smoorikins · 02/11/2013 07:13

She has dressed up as Lady Godiva, a Hindi goddess, an apple. An ape - its nothing to do with old women being scary fgs.

Its a fancy dress party for Halloween. Its not meant to be serious. I've dressed up as an old lady for fancy dress before now. Seemingly that makes me ageist and misogynistic. I find it interesting that personality traits can be so easily spotted using fancy dress.

If I dressed up as a cat, would I be reported to the RSPCA as an animal hater? If I dressed up as kd land would I be homophobic?

DeckSwabber · 02/11/2013 08:34

It didn't sit well with me. Old age = horror? Not very nice.

Kundry · 02/11/2013 08:44

But it isn't horror, it's simply fancy dress. American Hallowee'en costumes are just fancy dress.

And as fancy dress it was v v good and better than yet another Marie Antoinette.

SomethingOnce · 02/11/2013 11:07

I don't think ageism and misogyny are considered personality traits in the standard definition.

Smoorikins · 02/11/2013 12:16

I apologise for using the wrong terminology. Other than that, do you have any issues with my point of view?

squoosh · 02/11/2013 17:53

YABU

It's just a costume, it's not intended to be ghoulish or creepy. People dress up as babies, I don't see what's so different with this.

Some people just ache to be constantly offended.

YesterdayI · 02/11/2013 18:53

I don't see a problem with this at all. She is just dressed as an old lady! She isn't standing there saying that she is meant to be disgusting or scarey. She is dressed as a nice looking old lady. It's funny.

Do people that find Heidi Klum's costume offensive find Catherine Tate, Monty Python, Pantomime Dames and any of the numerous other actors and actresses who have dressed up to look old offensive?

Are people only offended because Heidi Klum's is pretty?

maypoledancer · 02/11/2013 19:04

I think the costume and make up were absolutely amazing. I think she just tries to outdo herself every year, more and more outrageous. Not that there is anything particularly outrageous about being old itself, but more that the execution of it is so creative and clever.

I like the fact that she doesn't always try to look sexy and amazing (agree with the comments about cats, bunnies etc - yawn).

And I thought there was something pretty cool about this totally authentic-looking elderly lady grooving on the dancefloor and looking like she was having a great time.

BlingBang · 02/11/2013 22:19

Exactly, I wouldn't mind looking like that old lady if I'm lucky enough to get to my nineties. She looks good.

jellybeans · 02/11/2013 22:25

I agree with OP. I noticed it right away when I saw the picture. Horrible thing to do. One day she will be an old woman and know how it feels though..

squoosh · 02/11/2013 22:34

That's the whole point, she's saying that this is what she'll look like in 50 years.

BlingBang · 02/11/2013 22:38

Exactly, most of us will be lucky to get to that age, especially looking that good. What's to pity really.
