To be fed up with the Bins grrrr

For atleast 5 years we have recieved fortightly collection of just 2 wheelie bins, one blue for recycling and one black for refuse. Although in the summer unconvient, it was much better than the new system we have been landed with this weekConfused

We now have the blue bin (as before), the black bin (as before) but with a whole new set of rules. Added to that a red bag for paper, that is not large enough for my family of 6 and neither does it withstand windy weather, or stay closed! Then a brown food waste bin, again not big enough and a kitchen caddy to collect food waste in compostable bags eeeurgghh.

I'm all for recycling, but the size of the new bins are insuffienent and in the new roll out , will not be collected for up to 3 weeksConfused

Every morning, noon and night have to make 5 trips to all these different bins and i'm already losing my patience with the padantic new rules. For example food caddy can only contain compostable bags which the council provided me just 6 off and i'm now expected to go off and pay for them.
Only foodwaste of particular size can go in it, dog biscuits not allowed.

Red bin, only allowed for it to weigh a certain amount or they won't take it. Fgs its for paper & cardboard what do they expect?

Black bin, only unrecyclables to be put in it, but no food, so where are the dog biscuits supposed to fucking go?

I am in the midst of de-cluttering my home but any electricals are disallowed from any of the bins. So where do i throw broken toasters, toys and the like?

So they expect me to dilly dally and flaff about with every meal time, not to mention wash out the fuckers too. And things such as cleaning up in the morning have became a nightmare juggling rubbish to each of it's designated areas so they can ship it out to god knows where for some poor other person to sort throughConfused

"any electricals are disallowed from any of the bins. So where do i throw broken toasters, toys and the like?"

You take them to your nearest recycling/dumpit site like everyone else does.

SHRIIIEEEKFuckingBearBlood · 01/11/2013 12:53

that does seem very complicated!
What if the OP does't drive? I had no idea you couldn't throw a broken toaster in the bin tbh

NoComet · 01/11/2013 12:53

I can't see any one checking a food bin so that's the dog biscuits sorted.

pumpkinsweetie · 01/11/2013 12:53

Very easy bunker, if i actually had a car! Nor did i mention our tip is over 10 miles away, neither is it on bus route or train route and even if it was it would cost money to get there and i also wouldn't be able to carry it.

The council tax is there for a reason and i expect to be able to throw away something simple as one broken toaster once in a while than have to make a trip to the tip in which to do so.

although I have to answer:
"Black bin, only unrecyclables to be put in it, but no food, so where are the dog biscuits supposed to fucking go?"
in the dog?? Isn't this why people have dogs - to reduce food waste? :o

pumpkinsweetie · 01/11/2013 12:55

Even the dog leaves leftoversGrin
I guess they won't be able to actually see what's in the black bin as it's all to be tied in black bags. Think i have just solved my problemsWink

kinkyfuckery · 01/11/2013 12:55

You'll get used to it.

We moved house 6 months ago and now have 5 different types of bins/collections. Confusing to begin with. but second nature now.

kinkyfuckery · 01/11/2013 12:56

I put cat biscuits in the food bin, after all they are food!

pumpkinsweetie · 01/11/2013 12:57

I hope so kinky didn't think it would drive me this bonkers until they actually came and started being used. I suppose it is just one of those irratating things i will have to put up with.

We have small electrical item recycling bins at supermarkets and parades of shops here. You don't have to go to the tip.

I don't see what's eurgh about the food caddy bin, food waste is a massive problem.

We have one and can chuck anything in it. I'd be pissed if it only got collected every three weeks mind.

You can buy the compostable bags from supermarkets, not cheap which is a pain. We get some delivered every six months, which doesn't last five minutes. The red bag thing sounds like a pain in the arse. We have recycle boxes which can have anything put in them thank god.

Methe · 01/11/2013 13:04

It has been imposed by the EU I believe. We're all supposed to have a million recycling bins soon.

It's funny that when you drive round France, Italy or Spain (the limit of my recent European experiences) you don't see vast arrays of ugly bins cluttering up every street corner like you do here.

greenhill · 01/11/2013 13:05

Do you have a garden big enough to put your own composter at the end for vegetable peelings?

That's an awful lot of food waste, I suppose the council is trying to make us all rethink our shopping habits, it's difficult with DC as they can be faddy about crusts on sandwiches and insist on things being peeled and chopped too. I put all my food scraps out for the birds and have foxes at dusk to take what is left from the far end of the garden.

Like all things though, recycling is a habit, soon it will be second nature.

pumpkinsweetie · 01/11/2013 14:17

Bloody EU, thought it would be something to do with that!

I am all for it, but where is the evidence that all this effort is made for a reason? Because up until now it was made to be believed all blue bin items were recycled when in actual fact this was untrue.

If it indeed is going where i hope, good and if isn't what a pita for nothing.

I asked my local councillor about this after the binmen rejected an old pillow in the rubbish bin.

He told me to put it in a black binliner first and bury it under something else. So that's what I do now. Also with other stuff I can't be bothered to recycle.

Works for me.

pumpkinsweetie · 01/11/2013 14:24

Thankyou morgause fwiw i need to change my pillows soonSmile

craftynclothy · 01/11/2013 14:31

Just wait until you get some jobsworth woman knocking on your door on bin collection day asking if the bin by the road (awaiting collection) is yours because it has a fizzy drinks can in it and they should be recycled. Despite me telling her multiple times it was next door's she proceeded to lecture me about what can be put in the recycling bin until I loudly told her "We do recycle, it's not ours" and she replied with "Yes, well next door don't have a recycling bin so they have to put it in the black bin" Hmm. FFS almost screeched "Maybe you should make sure everyone has recycling facilities then before you come round telling people off for not doing it"

pumpkinsweetie · 01/11/2013 14:37

Won't be long crafty considering i get cans in the black bin from the public every week and to top it off upon research asda is the only shop in my town that does these compostable bags, which is miles away and i won't shop with them anymore due to taking ghost payments from my bank account. Not to mention they are £2.25 for 20Confused

OP posts:
Bunbaker · 01/11/2013 15:23

I didn't know that about pillows. I'm glad I do now as I need to replace some pillows.

Grumpywino · 01/11/2013 15:59

Life is far too short for 'recycling' i.e shipped abroad for landfill sites. And how much money is being wasted on this giant con??

greenhill · 01/11/2013 16:33

Thank you for the pillow tip. I have a few to get rid of too. I wonder if the council will accept old duvets for fabric recycling. I feel bad about not being able to fit stained duvets in the washing machine as they are too big to fit in the drum, there isn't a launderette here either.

Terrortree · 01/11/2013 17:00

What do you put in the blue bin? I remain confused on what goes where.

I have a brown bin which says 'garden waste'. I don't have a garden.
A green bin which says something utterly unrelated to rubbish/contents.

A blue bin.

Thanks

pumpkinsweetie · 01/11/2013 17:41

A blue bin is for milk bottles, pop bottles, glass bottles, juice cartons.

Our council has just changed from;

Black box - paper
Brown sack - garden & food waste & cardboard
Own carrier bag - glass
Own carrier bag - tins
Black bin bag - general waste

Plus I seperately collected plastic bottles and tetra paks and took them to bottle bank recycling.

We now have blue lidded wheelie bin - all dry recycling items mentioned above plus hard plastic food pots and containers.
Green lidded wheelie bin - garden and food waste.
Black bin liner (52 delivered for the year) - general waste.

I think the change cost £5m.
