Hi I am a long term lurker but never brave enough to post but need some opinions on this. My dd is in P1 and basically when it is wet or raining outside the children have to sit silently with the heads on their desks , this goes for break and lunch time. Is this normal ? it seems very ott to me , I thought maybe some colouring in etc would be more "normal". Would ibu to discuss with the teacher ? I know the other p1 class is the same so maybe its the whole school but it seems cruel especially since we live in scotland and it rains alot.

Completely unacceptable. You must not accept this. Contact your local authority, as well as HMIE and the care commission (don't think it is still called the care commission, but google will link you I'm sure)

are they supposed to be having a little rest? MY mum said in the first year of school she was made to have a liedown after lunch

gorionine · 02/11/2013 20:07

Definitely not normal. In the school I work in, the rain has to be pretty consistent for children not to be allowed outside (with appropriate coats on obviously). When we keep the children in, they do as other have said, colouring in, drawing, craft activities or board games. A few minutes before the bell, we tidy up and the children sit down to calm down a bit listening to a story book of their choice. If there is still time left, they like to show what they have been drawing or making and sometimes even sing a song or show a little dance they came up with.
I really cannot see where your Dc's school is coming from, the children will feel like caged lions if they have not let steam off one way or another. It cannot help maintaining positive behaviour.

Any update OP? Did you see the head today?

Heymacarena · 04/11/2013 18:31

what a strange practice.

DS went to a Catholic primary - and he said they didn't have to sit quietly on wet days with their heads on the desk.

they were allowed to sit with friends and chat during lunch also.

doesn't seem a good environment atall.

Do Scottish schools have a Governing body?

If so, make sure you let them know what's going on and your feelings about it.

prettybird · 04/11/2013 21:45

No we don't. Parent Councils only have an advisory role - about the only "power" they have is the right to be involved in recruiting the depute or hard teachers (not even sure that that is still enshrined in legislation)

foreverondiet · 04/11/2013 21:58

Not normal.

My son was told off for playing football with his hood down was gouge post if that was unreasonable - they are only allowed out in rain if coats on hoods up, other must play under shelter....

Hav en't read whole thread but we have colouring in, reading corner, construction toys etc during break and the same with story telling by dinner nannies at lunch break for little ones and games etc for ks2! ABSOLUTELY BLOODY RIDICULOUS - i'd be having a word with headteacher to find out what actually does go on . . . unless this was just a one off to give everyone a bit of peace Smile

needthemoney · 05/11/2013 12:24

Really hope the OP returns to this thread soon. Disturbing to think this is going on as its so obviously wrong.

Thatisall · 05/11/2013 12:36

Waiting to hear an update. This is horrible!! I don't think the OP would be out of line not sending dd to school today.

ProcessYellowC · 05/11/2013 12:50

Ooh how weird. I remember this as a whole-class punishment from time to time (rural Scottish School - mid-eighties).

LimitedEditionLady · 05/11/2013 20:55

Oh id be annoyed,at school we read books, watched a film or did some arty stuff.what the hell!kids need a break too!

needthemoney · 07/11/2013 14:58

OP I would really love to hear an update on this and I wouldn't mind knowing what school it was as well

Hope you are finding out some answers and solutions to this situation!

hopskipandthump · 07/11/2013 15:02

I sometimes make my kids eat without talking, if they're jabbering on so much that they're not eating anything, so that might be a reason for the school 'no talking at lunch' rule? Also I don't see anything wrong with allocated seating - our school does that and it helps children get to know other people, plus prevents any cliquiness with some children getting left out.

But the heads on desks thing is seriously weird. I would follow up on that asap!

needthemoney · 13/11/2013 21:21

any news OP????

Thatisall · 13/11/2013 21:37

Did the OP come back with an update?

iwantanafternoonnap · 13/11/2013 21:37

My DS would have to be taped down to sit like that. How awful and no wonder your DD doesn't want to go to school when it rains. Makes you wonder what they say to them to make them stay so still.

Any news OP?
